The Cars changed music forever in 1978. Same year many great new bands came out like Van Halen. The Cars were known for throwing new sounds / instruments into their songs. The band had dual power vocalists with Benjamin Orrs smooth voice (on this song) and Ric's quirky voice and lyrics. YOU have to listen to their first album's songs "Just What I Needed" "My Best Friend's Girl" "Good Times Roll", "Moving in Stereo". Back when you didn't have music streaming this was one of those albums you could listen to front to back both sides and LOVE every song.

The Cars released their debut album in the late 70s, and were a combination of rock and new wave. They had nearly 20 hit singles from the late 70s into the early 90s, with their biggest album, Heartbeat City, spinning off a number of singles that were also made into iconic and hugely popular videos on MTV. These videos used a variety of then-new computerized techniques and were ground-breaking at the time. My favorite of those hits and videos was Magic, but all of the songs from that album featured Ric Ocasek's future third wife, model Paulina Porizkova - she'd been hired for the first video when Ric was still married to his second wife, who he divorced in 1989, marrying Paulina soon after. My very favorite Cars song is Let's Go, from their second album Candy-O. It's full of joy and energy and is a perfect driving, sing-along song - though to be fair, that's true of most of their music.

The Cars were an amazing band and I loved them starting as a teen in the 80s. Both of their lead singers, Ben and Ric, had very different voices and styles but they both worked so well. I think my favorite song with Ben Orr singing is probably "Just What I Needed" and my favorite song with Ric Ocasek on lead vocals is probably "You Might Think". They had a lot of good high energy cheerful songs and they had some great videos during the heyday of MTV. Most of their songs would give lead guitarist Elliot Easton a guitar solo, and I always enjoyed those. Dang it, now I want to find all my Cars tapes and CDs and play them for the rest of the day. 😀

And The Cars sounded great in them.

The song "Drive" by The Cars, released in 1984, is a reflective and somewhat melancholic song that deals with themes of emotional support and dependency in a relationship. The lyrics, sung by bassist Benjamin Orr, center around someone asking a loved one who is going through tough times, "Who's gonna drive you home tonight?"-a metaphor for providing care and emotional stability. The song explores feelings of loneliness, vulnerability, and the need for reassurance and help when facing life's challenges. The underlying theme of "Drive" suggests a person in a difficult situation who might not be able to manage on their own, raising questions about who will be there to support them when they are struggling emotionally or mentally. It's a poignant look at relationships and dependency.

Interesting. Drive is certainly an esoteric title, but had there not been a video for the song, I may have thought something similar. But rather I believe the song is about someone who has lost their mind. It could be about drug addiction, but I think it's much darker, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, at least the lyrics suggest someone who is not at all in control of their thoughts or actions.
@big8dog8873 ай бұрын
While "Drive" is a nice song, and their biggest chart hit, it's actually fairly atypical of Cars music, which generally tends to be a lot more upbeat. Most of the other songs people are suggesting are more indicative of what you would expect of a Cars song. In particular, "You Might Think" is very fun video.
