Her breath control while maintaining such a pure tone at this slow tempo is just awesome. The pathos she brings coupled with crystal clear diction is a lesson to every singer since.

@arnoldamaral74066 жыл бұрын
DanielZavagna I discovered Janet Baker and the concert choir in high school I was a sophomore 15 years old 1966. We were singing Vivaldi's Gloria which is typical for a high school concert choir. We took Allstate the state championship two years running best tenor Alto. Our Music Teacher mr. Welch was very good you said to us listen to this and listen to this voice her name is Janet Baker. I never forgot that my best friend and I when in college went to the college musical Library he had never heard. Vivaldi's Gloria. We put on our headphones and listen inside the music library. Janet Baker had a solo sung in Latin. David played the cello very well. He was my best friend in the University we had a lot in common music vast vocabulary sense of humor Etc. My father really liked him and to David that meant a lot he said to him David my son if you have Arnold as a friend you have a friend for life. I'm Arnold. My dad's name was Daniel my mother's name was Alice. Yes Janet Baker is one of a kind I think the most beautiful metzl soprano to come from the British Isles. I'm 6th generation American I call that sadness LOL. Mozart Salzburg Vienna deeply appreciate that beautiful music that he created especially his operas The Marriage of Figaro abduction from the seraglio Don Giovanni. The Magic Flute Cosi Fan tutte. Thank you for listening I use the microphone when I make a comment do to not immune deficiency I am fine I will be 68 years old in 2 months thank you for your time and your patience they're Opera loving fan goodbye. Ed Moore ..... Even this performance is truncated. Perhaps, because it is live, clapping starts too soon. I think the audience should wait a good 5-10 seconds before clapping :Time to let the music soak in. The music is still radiating outward, outward and it needs a space of silence to move into. The cacophonous beating of hands, the rowdy applause, beats it back and obliterates the afterglow that is absolutely necessary for the FULLEST enjoyment of the music.

This is the definitive performance of this aria. Everything that Janet Baker does is as near perfection as is possible. In fact the only negative comment one could make about her, has nothing to do with her voice or her singing, but her conservative hairstyle.

+MrAviron Their voices are obviously different but I don't think you can honestly say one singer is finer than the other. The are both at the very top of their art and that's all that matters.

@frogmouth4 жыл бұрын
She is mezzo. Ferrier is also. Different colours. Both beautiful beyond belief. You can't really compare. It boils down to a preference of one register over another if you do . A modern interpretation that is very good I'd Joyce DiDonato who is a number one Janet Baker fan! Similar devotion to composer and text and ability to convey emotion. Her voice is also mezzo but a tad higher
@frogmouth4 жыл бұрын
Sorry Ferrier contralto. Autotext does edits! DiDonato mezzo also Baker . She does the Sea Knaben Wunderhorn lieder beautifully and much mezzo repertoire

I agree with all of the praise. But that aside, does this version end abruptly?? Here is the entire lyric sung by Dame Baker: DIDO: But Death, alas! I cannot shun; Death must come when he is gone. CHORUS Great minds against themselves conspire And shun the cure they most desire. DIDO: Thy hand, Belinda... darkness shades me; on thy bosom let me rest; More I would, but Death invades me: Death is now a welcome guest! When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create no trouble, no trouble in thy breast; Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! Forget my fate. ==================================================== I have listened to many other versions. It has just the right balance of lyricism and gravitas.
