So, funny story, I used to make and sell cloth diapers! I had my own store and brand (Sweetiebums) and was considered a WAHM (work-at-home-mom). I was super into the cloth diapering game! One thing to consider with all-in-one diapers is they take a really long time to fully dry and can trap odors easier. I used to sell what I called an “all in two” which was the cover and then I had a snap in “soaker” pad that you could add to for heavy wetters. Maybe instead of sewing your inserts in, you could add snaps and snap them in. That way, you’d avoid the long dry times, odors that won’t die, and can adjust for your baby’s wetting needs. Just a little cloth diapering secret from an old cloth diaper maker. :)

My daughters are 45 & 42 so I used cloth nappies on them. I think there were some disposable ones around but they were so expensive. We used them for long car trips. My cloth nappies were just simple squares of toweling. I had to fold them and pin them on the baby ( triangle fold for newborn, kite fold for over 4 months). The cloth nappies you are using are so strange to me. They do look very cute. I suggest that you wait until you are using the bigger nappies before sewing them as you might find it easier to keep them as is.

My children were little just before disposable diapers came along. Our cloth diapers were not cute, but the only thing to decide was flat gauze or prefold gauze. I washed every other day in hot water, two rinses, dry in the sun when it wasn’t too cold. I’m glad you’re enjoying doing cloth! The other day you were talking about whether or not you were “savoring the moments” correctly. I think the best way to do that is to enjoy now and not hope for (too many) stages to be over. Before long you’ll look back and wonder where the years went, which you’ve probably heard many times already. When my kids were close to starting school, I thought that soon things would get a bit boring. Was I ever wrong! Ours are older than you and Peter and they are just as interesting as the day they were born. I am amazed at how things have swung around for your family since Trikafta. I was just thinking today back to how very sick you were, Mary, just a few years ago. And now you have your little boy. My heart swells. 💖

Love love love your blogs about baby and how absolutely BESOTTED you guys are.. But, I'm hoping you might consider doing a video of the less than fantastic times. Parenting is a HUGE struggle for first time parents especially, and while I have no doubt you guys are doing fine majority of the time, ALL parents have SUPER hard days, even questioning if they're good enough parent - , albeit for most parents, that will be brief. As much as it's sooooo great to see the fab times, I think those who don't know better will think parenting is as easy as you guys show.. With all the gt times, baby rarely crying. Etc. Granted, complicated cos you won't want the bio family to get the impression you're not enjoying it, or there are hard times.. So it is a balance. From my experience as a family health worker with 16 yrs in the job, the adjustment for parents who have been desperate to have a baby eg, IVF as well) to get post natal depression at a higher rate / struggle more than average, because the fantasy they've imagined parenting would be like is often a much steeper fall into reality

The temperament of the newborn makes a huge difference too! My first was such an easy baby, contented, and slept a ton! Second baby literally cried all. Day. Long. It was so depressing! My hubby couldn't wait to go to work to get away from the stress! Not all babies are the same. Elijah seems very easy - going and contented. What a huge blessing! ❤️😊

So much electricity water and time etc and changed to disposable and never regretted it. I had many visions of grandeur of the perfect and necessary natural way to do things and after a few kids, it’s what’s reasonable. I DID deliver at home and nurse my babies for a year. It's just don't think it's very kind to mention Ollie isn't being attended to or ignored now that their baby has joined their family. You can tell how much Peter and Mary love their dog who has been their treasured family member for many years before baby. When in doubt, just watch their video about when Ollie was very sick needing surgery very quickly. They were so worried about him. I have been in that situation myself with our dog(s) and it tends to make you feel so awful and sad when they aren't feeling well and you have to make decisions regarding their care at the vet. Ollie always seems to be in the room with all of them either awake and relaxed taking it all in or just napping. I like that they include him in their filming. He likes to be around them, he's very loyal. His pj's they put him in to keep him from bothering his healing belly are a wonderful way to ensure he feels better and keep him safe. They care and they love their dog and it shows.. So yes even though baby Elijah is here, so is Oillie and their love shines though for him. Ollie is a very lucky boy.

When he’s past breast milk and into solids and his poop is no longer water soluble it’s SOOO worth it to get bamboo inserts. They catch so much of the solids and help to not have to wash the diapers so much before the washing machine. You can find then for $9 for 100 sheets. So great! I hope that helps. If you want to talk more about cloth diapering I love it so much and have learned a lot since having my 19 month old. Also hang them out in the sunshine to dry- great to take stains out, good for less dryer time/environment and good natural sanitizer.

The best part of washing cloth diapers for me was drying them on the clothes line hanging them outside to dry in the sun. Of course I used the plain white ones, not fancy ones.😊

I used cloth too. I’d advise trying the pocket ones as he grows as they are definitely easier to grow with the needs of the baby.

I was totally jonesing over your cloth diaper chat. I cloth diaper my first son with mostly pocket, a few all in ones and some prefold with covers. It is nice to have a little bit of each, because their absorbance needs change as they grow. I'm preparing for baby number 2, currently 15weeks and just bought so used AIO to supplement as both kiddos will be in diapers but hopefully not too long. Peter is right it can be like trading cards.

I have a quick question that popped in my head when you showed the British cloth diaper. (If this is inappropriate/too personal, no hard feelings! We love ya'll!!) This question is for Mary- if you guys go on a long airplane ride, say to London, if needed, would you be able to use your vest while in flight? I'm extremely curious about anything and everything! (And I live right by Fort Bragg, NC!!) I cannot get enough of ya'lls massive smiles everytime you see Elijah! You two are doing an amazing job!!!

we love cloth nappies! If you are going to sew the liner in, make sure it's not going to ruin the PUL waterproof lining (maybe sew it onto just the fabric layer?). I know when we have had a rip in the PUL lining the nappies become useless/ only good for swimming nappies.

Good to get ice off out side couch as I feel it makes the chair last longer. Be careful poo doesnt slide out of diaper. I used to fold squares -cotton fabric into nappie shapes and used pins that I'd run through my hair to sharpen as they was No such thing as fancy nappy like you showed -diapar but many years passed and I moved to America and I brought those adorable box throw away ones because putting wet diapers-fabric in a dryer tend to give more nappy rash when its snowing as they arent going on the line out side to dry using the sun to kill bacteria. Use nappy cream as a barrier. I'd never lived in a snowly cold climate before and i found at costo they was quite affordable compared to my native country. Ones you buy tend to hold a few pee pee before having to be changed. Fabric sits wet on the skin.

well done! I used to take out my silver cross carriage in NYC with friends and we would shop for small packs of Pampers. Cloth diapers I tried then really didn't cut it 1975. So happy for all your joy. Loved my new t shirts from the shop. That was interesting with the ice on the couch and chairs. My youngest son is doing respiratory therapy in Boston and my daughter is doing ICU nursing in Boston as well. All my kids have long been independent , that's a good thing to long forward to. 🧓😼😺

I made cloth diapers and the only thing I would say is be careful where you sew it in because the pul(or waterproof part) will leak where little sew holes are. What I did with some of mine was putting snaps inside the pocket part of just the liner so I didn’t compromise the pul. Or you could try to figure out how to sew it to just the liner part!
