I did a paper on something similar to this in a sexuality class in college (it was a final project so I had to do a lot of research that wasn't readily available at the time). It can be sexual, but it isn't inherently so. A lot of people who practice Abdl or age regressive activities are trying to overcome their childhood traumas and relive what they lost. It looks extreme to a lot of people, but if you look into it, it's not as degenerate as it looks, even if you think it's weird. It can also be a way these people cope with stress or to avoid negative mood states, though there are some concerns it may not be a healthy coping mechanism for some. "According to some scholars [3,8,10], ABDL practices are related to traumatic developmental experiences. In this perspective, ABDL interests are considered as a way to elaborate psychological conflict consequent to traumatic experiences from childhood, such as sexual or physical abuse or experiences of victimization“ It's usually seen as a way to relive or rewrite a childhood you lost or a way to escape. Also not all DL Practioners age regress and the interest for most people already develops in childhood (around 11).

If they're going to use a playground, they could just build their own. The main issue is people not understanding what it actually is and making assumptions more than the practice, especially if it's private. They're probably not driving to the house in their diapers. Also a lot of people who practice that also have partners who know She's not the only therapist who treats ab/dl practioners. For the record, I find wearing diapers and purposely soiling yourself (i dont think all do that) a bit strange and personally a bit more than the age regression tbh bc they usually do that in private or therapy (unless theyre on TLC)

The idea of healing your inner child can take many forms. If it helps, things like coloring books, having a stuffed animal, asking for "snuggles", those are less advanced examples of coping that people use if they have childhood trauma. This is just a more advanced way to work through childhood traumas. While some in bdsm culture can make it sexual/kinky, at its root, this is solely to help someone work through a trauma in a safe space. Things that kids were able to do that they themselves were not able to do or maybe were dissociated when they did.
