I bought this years ago and we had a terrible game where every turn the event would be a ship... for like 5 turns in a row.which only appeared in the next round, which then got removed cos another ship appeared... so we never actually had a neutral ship on board. cos they kept removing each other. also, the game just seemed like a complicated version of Pirates Cove. the combat is almost identical.

Ah that's a shame. That doesn't sound quite right though, neutral ships only replace ships of that type, not any neutral ship.

I prefer the Caribbean theme, but Xia is better.

+Samurai Rabbit Yes, if you dig the sandbox-type, they're both very good. I'm a play-tester for the Xia expansion coming on Kickstarter this month and I'm even more in love with what's coming.

I own both. I bought Xia cos I have been aching for a sandbox space game that didnt involve armies. but the massive reliance on luck makes the game ... silly. When you build your ship to be safe from pirates, you have no space for cargo. and the way selling cargo works, there is never a point of having more than 2 cubes on your ship, ever. which seems arbitrary and stupid. i hope the expansion makes things better.
