Today I'm taking a look at the dice molds that have been popping up on sites like AliExpress, Wish, eBay, and even Amazon. The price varies by seller, but at the moment I'm seeing an average price per mold of around $1-2. That makes these the cheapest dice molds I've seen so far. Heck, these molds are even a bit cheaper than making your own, especially when you add up your labor costs.
Now, the real question is whether or not these molds are any good. You'll just have to watch the video to find out.

These only just hit the market, and there wasn't any way to know they were coming. $70 is still a steal compared to all of the other prices I was seeing. As for getting ruined after 10 uses, that was inevitable. Molds are considered consumables after all.

I got into resin with this molds two days ago and I love it :) I just didn't want to pay much money for molds, when getting into the hobby is an investment already and I am not sure if it is my cup of tea. Now I can say: Getting the d20 out of his mold is a bit of a struggle but it worked and I happy, proudly joining my pen and paper group with custom dice (and gifting a selfmade d20 to everyone in my group)

After taking a look, I think you're right! My dumpster die looks identical to the Scattergories dice I'm seeing online. They use letters A-P, R-T, and W. I'm assuming the other letters were ditched because they're not that common. That, and they didn't want to R&D a new style of die. lol

@@LastRites47 Those should look nice. A little ink or food coloring should be able to pull that off. Be careful not to add to much though, and anything water based (like the food coloring) will change your resin curing time a bit.

To be honest, I don't really play anymore either. That might change in the future, but for now I'm just enjoying indulging my shiny math rock addiction on my terms. I still think these molds are an amazing way to learn the craft on a budget. I even use them to test out color ideas, since they're easier to replace than my other molds when they wear out. I'll be sticking to my custom master molds (tutorials coming soon) for any I decide to sell though.

Nice video. I feel like you kind of glossed over the sanding though. I’ve made the two D20s from the 19 piece set, and you have to sand down 4 faces to get rid of the sprue and the raised lip from the cap. Not really a big deal, but it was a surprise to be sure. Thank you for sharing!

Yeah, I decided to focus less on the final dice and more on the molds in this video. I did talk about the extra lip a bit with the D24, but that's about it. One very important thing to keep in mind about molds is that they're consumables just like your resin. Even the best made molds have a limited number of dice they can make.

Great Video! Really thinking about making some custom dice for each player in my campaign. However, I don’t have a pressure pot. Do you recommend making dice in these molds without a pressure pot? I’m just worried if I mix a color in, there’ll be too many bubbles.

If you use a low viscosity resin or a UV curing resin you should be pretty safe. UV would be the safest since you can let it settle completely before exposing it to a light to cure, though you would risk solid pigments (like mica powder) selling to the bottom.

I've been toying with vibrations and heat with these molds and no pressure pot, but Dark Moon Dice has a good video where she suggests partially filling them with the lid off and using heat (like a BBQ lighter) across the top, before placing the lid on and filling them to the top. Also with a reservoir idea for them!

I bought 3 sets of these, 1 from wish and 2 from Amazon. They were all the 19 pieces and I can make several sets of dice with them. The only complaint I have with them is if I'm not careful I get voids on the top of them that I fill with UV resin and then sand them down.

I hope you enjoy your stay! I'm hoping to have more dice making tutorials soon. 😁 As for sanding, right now I use 2 inch sanding discs and a power drill. It takes a bit of practise to get used to, but it's a whole heck of a lot faster than hand sanding. I also finish my dice off with a buffing sponge attached to the same drill and some PlatX plastic polish.

I spent big bucks on the home made silicone molds sold in Etsy. I didn't realize that they have no covers, so one facet of each die is blank. So I got ripped off, I think, unless anyone has an idea how I can work around this issue. I bought some little stickers used for gel nails, so they look nice, but I don't know if anyone would use them in the games.

How would you suggest getting rid of the edges created by the top piece of the mold? I have tried cutting it and sanding, but the face just looks wonky and uneven when compared to the rest of the faces. It seems like yours are all even and I have the same molds.

I sand my dice. These days I've even moved on to power sanding to speed up the process. It takes a bit of practice though.

so i have these molds. I am new to dice making. I know some of the basics when it comes to resin, and the air bubbles.i do not have a pressure pot. i have that same issue when you get the big gap bubbles. should i just wait till it dries and add a second squeeze of resin in after it first sets?

If you're having a large void at the fill hole, you might want to add a reservoir for a little extra resin to the molds. The most common method is to use a tiny funnel, which are typically made using the cut off tip of a disposable pipette.

i had some difficulty at the begining since i dont have a presure pot, and i know your comment is 7 months old, but maybe it'll help other people ! So what i do now is that i pour my resin with the cap open, and i pour resin on the cap itself on the number side, and way until 5 to 6 hours to put the cap on. I burn the bubbles on the surface with matches, and try to keep at least a pipette full of resin to add some to the dice if needed ! with this i usualy get very little flaw on my dice ! i hope it'll help someone out there (sorry english is not my first language)

It's definitely possible to get minimal bubbles with these molds. There are techniques like warming the resin slightly before mixing to improve the flow, mixing slowly to minimize bubbles, filling any bubbles with UV resin before sanding, etc. These molds offer up a relatively cheap way to practice.

Could anyone who has more experience with cooking and/or working with plastics tell me if it would be safe to use these moulds for making chocolate dice? I do have ethical concerns about the way they've sourced their moulds but at the same time I also want to make a snack platter for next years' roleplayers reunion.

While these molds could be used for making chocolate dice, I have no idea if the silicone used is food safe (especially with their questionable origin). You might be better off sourcing some food safe silicone and making molds from a cheap set of retail dice. The molds wouldn't even need to be perfect since the dice are meant to be eaten.

I bought a set from wish and I think this is the 10th die I make but no matter what, everytime it ends up with one single giant bubble on the top and I don't know how to prevent it. I don't have a pot and the problem with the molds I bought is that the hole where you have to put the syringe is always different size on every single die so it is almost impossible not to let some air enter. Any suggestion?

The main issue with these molds is that they don't have a reservoir for excess resin, and that leads to the issue you're experiencing. Heck, I had the same issue even with a pressure pot. A common solution people are using is to make a little funnel and stick it into the mold fill hole. That will allow you to put in some excess resin to prevent the large voids. The tips of disposable pipettes work well.

The hot glue idea flopped, but I did have some success with a couple other methods. The common fix is to use the tip cut off of a disposable pipette as a mini funnel/reservoir. If you want a more permanent solution you could use 100% silicone caulk (DAP is my go-to brand) to build a reservoir.

I'm using Art & Glow 2 part resin with a 40 minute work time. but every time I have some bad cavities. I guess the next step would be is a second pour to try to fill them if the DAP fails. Sadly the hot glue reservoir failed. The moment the glue cooled it popped right off. That being said, I did find a couple of other methods that worked perfectly. The main method people have been using is to snip off the tips of plastic pipettes to use as funnels and makeshift reservoirs. It works, but you need to sacrifice a pipette per die every time. The method I'm using right now is a bit different. I made the reservoir by brushing 100% silicone caulk around a marble that I placed on top of the mold's fill hole. When it cures the reservoir is fused to the mold permanently.

@@carmelzebra7 Maybe I did it differently then, since I haven't actually looked at any tutorials for that method. I just saw people talking about using the little funnels and then threw something together. I basically just cut off a pipette's tip, set it into the mold, and then applied a bit of hot glue around it to act as both a depth marker and a stabilizer. After that I trimmed the tip so that it didn't actually sit inside the die as it's curing and then removed it from the mold. I filled the mold using a syringe (this would probably also work when using them as squish molds), put the funnel back in the mold, and then topped it off.

There are plenty of dice makers that don't have pressure pots. Some people use low viscosity resins that don't trap air bubbles easily, while others use UV resins that don't cure until you shine a UV light on them. Since these molds are translucent, they'll work very well with UV cure resin. Just be sure to let all of the air bubbles escape before shining the light on them.

I like using a heated metal skewer to mix my resin first then pour, the small surface area of the skewer helps to avoid trapping air in the resin while mixing (that is normally when air gets trapped in) and the heat helps any air bubbles to rise if any air bubbles do get trapped in.

The jury is still out on that one. It's probably possible, but you might need to buy the commercial usage rights to the font (Visby Round, and it's surprisingly cheap). Of course, even then you'll still have to deal with people pointing out that they're based on Dispel's molds, and that's too much of a headache for me.

I have severe issues with bubbling on my dice and it's extremely frustrating. They are beautiful otherwise but the top bit is always bubbly, and I really don't want to invest in a pressure pot :(

These molds still get a few bubbles even with a pressure pot, but not as many as others I've used. I get rid of them by filling the bubbles in with UV resin before sanding. Of course, if you're going to be doing a lot of resin casting I definitely suggest getting a pressure pot. It's life changing.

If it's just on the top face then use a lighter when the bubbles rise to the top, the heat will pop the bubbles.

Prep your resin by putting the resin bottle and hardener bottle in a warm water bath for a few minutes before using them. Also, mix your resin slowly! That reduces micro bubbles. If you're still having issues with larger bubbles make sure you're filling your mold slowly, keep an eye on the mold and use a toothpick to help bring bubbles to the opening so you van fill the void.

I've been looking into that myself actually. I'm comparing tumbling media right now so I can figure out what has the best chance of working. Assuming it does work, it might be better to use a vibratory tumbler instead of a rotational, since that has a lower chance of rounding the edges.

The one thing that hasn't changed between my various dice making videos is the fact that I power sand using a drill. I recently upgraded to one that spins at 3000 RPM, and it takes around a minute or less to completely process a die face. That includes multiple grits and polish.

These moulds are taken from Dispel Dice, I would be very hesitant giving my money to Ali and wish. You'll also run into trouble if you ever sell dice made from these moulds unless you buy a license to use the font 'Visby'. Technically nothing wrong with using them for personal use, but supporting Chinese manufacturers who steal designs from artisan dice makers is wrong imo

No they aren't. The font is not exactly the same. Probably the masters they used to make the molds were deliberately manufactured to be similar, but the font is not the same as what dispel uses. The molds are not made from her dice.

@@mjastrz There are a few subreddits and Facebook on the topic. I don't use Facebook, so I only know they exist and that's about it. On Reddit there are a few dice makers that frequent /r/dice, /r/diceporn, and /r/resincasting.

are you at all concerned that these molds seem to have directly ripped off Dispel Dice's copyrighted fonts?

I actually talk about that near the end of the video, and since the release of this video I did a bit more digging. As another comment pointed out, the fonts used by Dispel are Visby and Visby Round (they seem to have changed font versions at some point in testing/production), and these molds are the Visby Round version. You can buy a commercial use license (which covers the production of these molds) from the creator of the font or font vendors for $25 (that covers just the bold version, $75 gets the whole family). If a dice maker wants to play it safe they can also pay the fee to the font designer. That being said, I don't suggest using these molds if you intend to sell your dice. Not just because of the backlash that's been going on either. One of the big issues with these molds is that some of the dice are terrible when it comes to number distribution, with the D10 being the worst offender.

not sure if you know but these designs are from Dispel Dice so there is a certain morality problem with buyng these in my opinion.

i believe these molds are stolen from dispel dice. please don’t buy them just because they’re cheap when they’re ripping off the hard work of another artist. not only the font but the style themselves is taken.
