I've backed the Dark Souls game from Steamforged a few years back, and looking at how this one plays out it feels very much like they've been very mindful of what did work and what didn't work with their previous installments and worked on it, which is pretty cool. DS is an alright game with a similar bossfight structure as this, but it had some flaws. Big ones in my opinion were that it didn't do much to provide a narrative campaign or a sense of story, non-boss fights could get a bit repetitive and time-consuming (especially when you needed to grind to progress), and the randomness in drawing loot could really break a playthrough in one way or another - lots of bad draws meant no progress, and some draws were so good they made fights trivial. I haven't checked all the other games they made in the meantime, but this one seems to address all those previous problems quite well - the pre-battle 'hunt' feels more like a story, you don't seem to get 'minor' encounters and just jump straight to the fun boss, and instead of drawing items you have a controlled gain of materials to use on a crafting menu. The evasion mechanic also looks a lot better by making you spend cards instead of relying on dice rolls. Kudos on that!

Finally, someone who's actually paying attention and not just going "eughhh I was bad at Dark Souls, Steamforged bad, no sale 0/10" Dark Souls had some flaws, but this game has addressed and corrected every single one of them, and the core of the game is an improved version of the *best* part of DSBG, which most people who actually bothered to play it know was pretty brilliant and a ton of fun, if the loot RNG didn't fuck you too hard on the way there.

I am glad they talked about sharpen a hammer
@GarmrKiDar3 жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, a real or realistic warhammer-type weapon would indeed need sharpening. Warhammer heads would have a 'flat' side (and sometimes even that had jags and points to dent armour plates), and that flat side served to deliver concussions through plate armour without having to break through the metal. However, the other side was almost always a beak or point of some sorts, meant to puncture through the armour and deliver deep wounds. That would be used in certain situations, but especially when you couldn't get a good strike to any body part where a concussion would be effective, so you opted to try and wound a limb instead. I don't know about MH hammer designs, but if they're as massive as those swords, I guess it would make sense to have both a flat head to deliver blunt trauma to a monster's skull AND a beak/spike end to deliver deep wounds through their scales.
@michaelsimao4953 жыл бұрын

Or does the time card happen as soon as the final attack is resolved? Lolies casts sleep... Did you choose that weapon for specifically that reason?

I'm not sure about the stamina board. Why isn't this sufficient enough to hold all your attack cards? Card 1 and 5 wobbling on the edge is too bad. Better even: Why isn't there a player board that can hold up all your gear, attack cards, damage cards, life token, threat level token, etc?

5:00 I don't like the text The crest of the Hunter's Guild contains four symbols, representing the four values that the association attempts to uphold. The highest symbol represents ‘respect for nature’ Hunters are not Gears of War like Solider badass with "the hunt is on! Boy" you mix player with lore hunter Edit: 6:23 well... The game looks really good from the look. Not stunning but all the parts look nice. The miniatures are a sight to behold, but the central board, while beautiful, doesn't seem to be utilized to its full potential. I wonder if single hex tiles would not have been enough and could have been arranged in a much more dynamic and shapeless way? Because putting a few tokens on the board seems dull to me when it could be whole tiles. The mechanics especially the combat and the loot principle looks promising. Threat as a tie breaker works great even if it is passed around randomly seems wrong. I find it very nice that there is a lot of movement in the fight. Even though I find it strange that dodging doesn't cause movement? (Did I miss something?) But the monster can move you for free through the map? The way to the monster seems wrong to me not only because it can be absurdly dangerous which should be no problem for monster hunters from the new world but also because of the text which in my opinion has more in common with the monster hunter world movie than with the game. I would rather have the option to decide whether to collect ores, bones, etc. or whether to prepare traps, bombs, extra potions for the hunt. The possibility to lure the monster to other areas, things like that. Think of things like monster hunter freedom unite or mh 4u the openings. The preparation for the hunt during the hunt.

Bummer. I'm out. I don't get why the cards instead of a # of low value dice. There is no tension aside from the threat of getting killed. Too clinical. Love the monster movement though. Maybe I'll buy dice...and use those. hmmm. Also, knowing the monster's next move, meh. Wonder if that could be house ruled.
@HalBreden3 жыл бұрын
Cards allow for a set amount of damage over time. You might get lucky with your initial draws and do very high damage, but the deck has a specific amount that it's going to deal, whereas dice might be rolling high - or low - consistently for someone an entire game. There's probably a balancing aspect in that which hopefully comes from playtesting, rather than arbitrary choice. Knowing how the monster will react to your attack allows - and in fact forces - you to think tactically, figuring out what you can do to make sure you're able to use your following moves, or set up another player to be able to attack. Games where you spend the entire time chasing something because it moved out of range on a random reaction aren't always fun, and in this case is in conflict with the timer mechanic they have in place. Might be interesting if they had it be a couple of options, and you roll for the monster, so it doesn't always do that *exact* same thing, but changing the behaviour turn to turn does add a little variety.
@Grieva-SeeD-3 жыл бұрын
@@brianmyers13 The issue I have always had with Dice is they are cubes of luck. Games like Monster Hunter and Dark souls are rarely about luck and more about strategy and knowing a monsters attacks. Having dice would remove it from the skill needed in the video game. The dice ruined the Dark Souls boardgame for me so I am happy to see they adapted to have a card system which more accurately represents what you can plan in the video game.

I watched about ten minutes of this and decided Primal: the Awakening matched up with my tastes better. I love monster hunter but there’s too much going on in this.
@devilduckietu3 жыл бұрын
Want to clarify: I think this because the comparison in my head is comparing Rise to World. This board game feels like world which is great, but primal feels like Rise. That’s where this is coming from.
@kyleb81173 жыл бұрын
They both come off as huge money grabs to me. I love MHW but I don't think it could ever be an enjoyable board game. My reasoning is basically opposite of your reasoning for avoiding it. There isn't enough going on. Can I mount the monster? Can I mine a node while a fight is happening? Where are the MHW-specific weapons like my precious Insect Glaive? (An expansion, I'm sure.) Sharpness levels of weapons? Inventory? etc. Simplifying the gathering/tracking into a CYOA book also really cuts down on replayability, I think. And the flip side of that is: if I could fully simulate the MHW experience as a board game, wouldn't it just be so fiddly that I'd rather just boot up the video game? Probably.
@devilduckietu3 жыл бұрын
@@kyleb8117 insect glave is in the all in pledge at 240 or so. You have to buy it that way you can’t pick and choose. Primal is a unique experience and all new lore, and honestly the minis turned out better.
@kyleb81173 жыл бұрын
@@devilduckietu The quality looks good on Primal, but the problem is: I start off looking at pricepoints and I'm already out. Why can't I have a game without the over-the-top-cool minis but decent chits/standees and have the same experience for a LOT less price? So many Kickstarter games I pass up because of the miniatures cash grab. I remember there was a Pirate-themed one I was pretty excited about except that it had unnecessary minis which upped the cost over $100. As an example for MHW, imagine if the game was exactly the same, but there were good quality chits that had the monster's/weapon's symbol instead of minis and the pricepoint was like $30. If it looked fun enough to play, I'd probably back it 'cause I have a handful of friends who love the game and I might be able to con them into playing it with me. (and hopefully it'd have a fun solo option)
