Greg Egan is literally the only person in the world who could and would write a book like this.

I purchased this book from a bargain outlet store a few years ago based purely on the blurb inside the cover, having never read Egan before. I’ve been reading through my “never read” shelf and finally picked it up. Just finished it and I really hope there are more stories coming from this world! Definitely strange, and there were some places where I felt I needed to sketch out some things to really understand, but it was a very entertaining read.

Greetings from France! I discovered Egan through your brilliant channel, and forgot the advice about starting elsewhere with his work. But I loved Dichronauts, it's my favorite read of the year so thank you so much Michael! It was easier than i expected to pick up the rules of this world and be there for the ride even when not understanding fully why this universe works that way. Really enjoy your five likes and dislikes format. Thank you again for the discovery

I got halfway and really wasn't enjoying it after first bringing introduced to Egan a few days ago with Reasons to be Cheerful and Quarantine, both of which I absolutely devoured. I was seeking a video to convince me to carry on, but after watching this and your excitement and passion I am now convinced it's a skill and experience issue, so I think it's time for me to DNF and return when I have trained my brain on hard sci-fi some more. Thank you ever so much!

@@FIT2BREAD I've already bought Dichronauts. Can't wait to start it. I'm now reading The House of Leaves, one of the most original, mysterious and weird books I've ever read. Even though I really like theoretical physics and I've read Hawkings, Einstein, Feynman and Brian greene, I never read fiction Sci-fi books, but now that I've discovered your channel I think I'm going to start reading a lot of it.

@@FIT2BREAD I mean, I’m no physicist, I just read science book for the layman, so I’m going to struggle the same as you, as I already was trying to understand the geometry you explain in this video. Still, I do love a good challenge. I’m curious, why you recommend other books from Egan before getting your hands on Dichronauts?

I've been introduced to Greg Egan in an online discussion with Joscha Bach and others... Joscha just mentioned Egan's writing in passing and I had to google the name to find out more. I've started out with "Permutation City" which was already a mind-opening and expaning read for me (and I'd say it's a good point of introduction for Egan's hard sci-fi.) ... then I picked up "Diaspora" which I just LOVED! And "Schild's Ladder" actually brought me to tears in the end. Which is weird for hard Sci-Fi, but it's just a marvellous masterpiece that never fails to make the reader care for the protagonists even in a social reality so different and remote. (That's maybe what "Schild's Ladder" symbolizes... that people basically remain reconizable as people throughout all the changes they go through.) Today I started reading "Dichronauts" and I'm still kind of shocked... This is literally an entirely new dimensionality of writing. (But Egan still has recognizable people living in this weird world.)

Bought this book from a barnes and noble back in 2017, and love the heck out of it. Even though I've probably had 5 readthroughs, I still have a hard time comprehending the mathematical jargon, especially at times where it's used in tangent with physical descriptions of the landscape. Nonetheless, I hope Greg Egan writes a sequel, since I would love to explore more about the top and bottom surfaces of the hyperboloid world.

@FIT2BREAD2 жыл бұрын
@@myoldchannel0690 yeah, def a different vibe than deaths end. My advice would be to go in expecting that some stuff won't fully register and allow the story, the parts that are grease-able, to just come to you. Though you may end up better at the physics stuff than me...I didn't take notes or anything, but if you are up for that with your reading, early on, I'd take some simple notes just to be secure on who is who...like which walker is paired with which sider. I think just knowing that and understanding the symbiotic relationship, removes most of the confusion. def check back in so I now how you are getting along with it (please)
