Thank you for posting this. Teena is one hell of a women. She had so so much talent and was very modest about it. Not like the diva's in the industry today.

I wouldn't call most of these ladies in the industry today divas. They are too thirsty. Teena was just doing her thang. She was a true diva. You look Diva up in the dictionary and boom there you go..Lady T's portrait! RIP Lady T❤

Arthur Weems :) Hey!! Oooh, just read this.. ok so check it out.. I have something to add to that. “Lovergirl”’s JOURNEY up the BILLBOARD POP/HOT 100. I was a long time huge fan of Lady T, since “Behind The Groove” “Square Biz” & “Portuguese Love” etc.. Ok, Lovergirl was inching up the Hot 100 and got as high as #51!!! And Then guess what..! It stalled !! WTF I thought to myself as an enthusiastic music fan and Billboard Chart observer... It STAYED at #51 for a SECOND week!! And then, ...something remarkable happened. It JUMPED FROM #51 to #39!!!! Accomplishing two amazing things at least: It entered the “TOP 40!” And It JUMPED 12 spots to enter the top 40 with a bullet!!! I wish I still had my copy of Billboard magazine for that week. Also, if I may add, there is a slight margin of error on my behalf because this happened such a long time ago in 1985: “Lovergirl” jumped from #51 to #39 OR #41 to #29 On the Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart! I was thrilled as a Teena Marie Lover/Fan. ..that song did not deserve to stall outside of the top 40. So glad it soared to at least #4.

@@ElectricCool Agreed She only had 2 Top 40 Singles on the Pop Chart Lovergirl and before that, her 1st Top 40 single was called I Need Your Lovin' which is my favorite and she even performed it on AB, Soul Train and it was even heard on American Top 40 and America's Top 10 with the late Casey Kasem God Bless Her

Quick but good interview. She must have performed "Lovergirl" (1984/85).
@justjackjordinjustin3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it aired in December of 1984, I’ll never forget for certain special reasons.... and she performed only one Song... Bryan Adams from Canada was the other musical guest that day and he performed 2 songs. (From his super smash hit album “Reckless” so he either performed “Run To You” or “Heaven” or “I Need Somebody” or “Summer of ‘69” or.... you get the picture :)? Peace ‘n Love

barbara vire I was one of the whites that loved this women.. I was 12 yo and bought everything from Teena Marie. I used to get so mad when people didn't know who Teena was... I use to watch them get into Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and other artist. I was jammin to Teena Marie, Phyllis Hyman, Denice Williams, Patti Labelle and Chaka Khan. Always loved my R&b and soul artist. When Teena died my heart sunk. I still cry thinking of her. Matter of fact I'm watching Unsung right now of Teena Marie. RIP Teena.. You were one of a kind.. BTW Teena Marie haters F/O I have no time for BS.

I second this! Teena said in one of her last interviews on the television show The View: The soul has no color! In another interview after she was given the R&B Pioneer Award she also stated that she always played the music that reverberated from within. Color was never an issue! In the same interview Teena made a fantastic point: If a black woman had an operatic voice and the she was born to sing opera, then she should by all means perform the music that she was born to sing. Teena just sang the music she was born to sing. Why some narrow minded ignorant people want to make it about her skin color is ridiculous, and why you Barbara have the audacity to make the uneducated assumption that all "whites" were prejudice. That is a dangerous generalization that needs to stop because, it is this kind of mentality that divides our nation to this day! Teena was certainly the soundtrack to my life and her music got me through countless hard times! I was so inspired by her ability to write, arrange, perform and produce her own music. I know as a teen I could not wait for albums to come out so I could read her original lyrics and the poems that always adorned her album covers, which inspired me to write my own poetry as a means of self expression. Teena will always be R&B royalty!

In 1964,my girlfriend and I were the only white girls at a James Brown and The Famous Flames concert.I grew up in strictly R& B,it has been and always will be,mymusic.After High school,I moved to S.F.where my best girlfriends boyfriend managed The Whispers,and owned Basin Street West,he was Chinese,Lewis Chinn,he also was partners with Don Cornelius,in a club across the street,Soul Train,where I saw every R& B group you can imagine,The Dells,The ChiLites,The Intruders,Timmy Thomas,Jackie Wilson,The O' Jays,I loved them all.And so yes,I was a white girl that knew who Teena was.And I was raised in a predominately Jewish town.I take people for who they are,not their color,always have and always will.

@@stjohnbaby Wow,you were blessed to have access to so much soul music,and know of Teena's music besides "Lover girl". I had no idea of her vast catalog of music,not of her association with Rick James until I read about it here on KZbin a few years ago.

I thought the same thing. There's an old interview of him with Janet Jackson. She was about 17 years old at the time and she had just performed a song off of her sophomore album, he kept flirting with her and telling her how pretty she was. It was quite awkward and creepy.
