Teena was the first caucasian woman to jump into the R&B mainstream. She was daring and gained the respect and loyalty of the black community. Rick James produced her, but she definitely added her own thing to it. Fantastic. I saw one of her concerts which she opened for Madonna. Bad mistake by the queen of pop. Teena blew her away.

Largely unknown to the mainstream, Teena was music royalty in the black community. She was simply known as "Lady T"! Here are some of my favorites! : Portuguese Love, Aladdin's Lamp, Square Biz, Behind The Groove, Tune In Tomorrow, Have My Cake And Eat It Too, Oooo La La La, Casanova Brown, and the Rick James and Teena duet, Fire & Desire! There are so many more! Lady T was a treasure! RIP

Lover Girl charted #4 on Top 100 Hits right under Madonna Material Girl. She just never got the MASSIVE fame that Madonna got. She was MOTOWN, with Rick, after all....and they were pushing Diana Ross who was charting Top 40 at the time. So they only released two singles that charted high.

Hi Arthur! I will admit that I didn't know anything much about her other than her name and this great song. When this was popular, I spent a lot of weekend nights in nightclubs, walking around dancefloors - beer bottle in hand, chest pumped, and sporting a somewhat conservatively spiked 'do. Ah, to be young again! This song is one of a few that always brings that happy memory to mind. I should investigate more of her music!

Teena can SANG. Once you dive more into her music you will see that her lane is primarily R&B. While black artists strived to “cross over” to mainstream popularity Teena crossed over to us. She performed this song on Soul Train! The first time we heard Teena was on a duet with Rick James. You HAVE to react to that. It will blow your mind. Both of them are amazing on that song.

Mary Christine Brockert, aka Teena Marie, released over a dozen albums in her life, including one in 2013 that was released posthumously. "Lover Girl" was her only Top 10 hit on the Hot 100, but she had a slew of R&B hits in her career. If you want to go down this rabbit hole, try "I Need Your Lovin", "Ooo La La La", or "Square Biz" for your next one. I would also request that you check out Laura Branigan, who had a string of great songs in the early 80s. "Self Control" is my favorite, but "Gloria" and "Solitaire" are also bangers. Another great songbird that we lost too soon.

Ooh la la la, Deja Vu, Out on a Limb, Portuguese Lover, If I Were A Bell, Square Biz, Behind the Groove take your pick. Lady T was one of a kind. Her first album had no pictures of her, probably so they could market her to R&B audiences. Please, please, please, check out the duet that Teena Marie did with Rick James for Female Friday, called Fire and Desire. Such a powerful song and really showcases her voice. Fun fact about that song, when they were to record it, Teena Marie had a bad flu, but they decided to go ahead and see how it went (think they were pressed for time because of scheduling) and she knocked out her vocals in 2 takes (when you hear her on this track, you will get why that is so amazing) and when she was done with recording, they had to take her to the emergency room to have her flu treated. Teena Marie is such an amazing artist! Keep up the great work, Family!!!

Teena was signed to Motown records as a solo artist, but they weren't doing anything with her. Then, Rick James came into the office for some meetings, and Berry Gordy introduced Rick and Teena and the rest is history. You need to dig into her catalogue...she is dope

Lady T!!! Glad you got to her. This is one of her good, fast songs; others include "Behind the Groove" and "Square Biz;" but listen to something like "Out On A Limb" to really hear what she can do on an emotional level. The only voice that can make me cry.

FINALLY! Please don’t let this b a 1 & done! Lady Tee is a rabbit hole so worth diving in2! “Ooh La La” is my favorite slow jam by Teena. In it u can really hear the influence Smokey Robinson had on her......... 💯🔥🤙🏽😎

Saw her in concert in 1986, Sacramento. The opening act was the Together Band. Instead of being back stage, she was in the audience evaluating the band... I remember the lead singer came off the stage and offered her the mic and she belted his song better than he. When she took the stage, her vocals were LP accurate. All in all , an astounding performance that I was privilged to have witnessed in my youth. Salute to a legend.

Great song, this coming from a metal head. If you listen to most 80's music, whether it be pop, rock, funk or whatever, they all had electric guitar in it. That's what I miss the most. Let me reiterate, they actually played instruments back then

So glad you finally got around to Teena Marie. I suggested this song in letter I sent on your second unboxing video. She’s not only a phenomenal singer, but she’s an exceptional guitar player. There just weren’t that many female funk artists in the 70s and 80s that also played and wrote their own music. The only other that I can think of is Klymax which was an all female funk band in the 80s.

She was signed to Motown and initially they did not show her as they were not sure what people would think; they wanted her to be heard first. Rick James produced a lot of her songs and you can really hear it on some. Please continue with Teena Marie; “Behind The Groove” is also an absolute banger! ❤️

Teena Marie is straight R&B!!! She black…Period! 😅 Her nicknames are “Lady T” and “Vanilla Child” we adopted her! She belongs to us! She was the girlfriend of singer, Rick James and we didn’t know she was white until she appeared on soul train, they never put her picture on her album covers until she made it big and we loved her every since! I know her personally May she rest in peace 🥰🙏🏾🌹🕊

Teena Marie is my favorite all time female singer, and I am an African American male who grew up in the 70s and 80s. Here raw talent is amazing. One of the best song ever, was her duet with Rick James "Fire and Desire". She does not come into that song until 3 mins in, but when she does you will see why many like me consider her the best ever. If you like funk songs then "Square Biz" is one of the best funk tune ever - especially by a female singer. Lady T

This was a single released for Top 40 that peaked at #4 under Madonna Material Girl. So it's pop. For her TRUE talent and genius, do Portugese Love. NO other woman wrote the music, lyrics, composed, performed and sang like this Queen. And only she and Patrice Ruffin were given full control of their albums.
