Teena was the first caucasian woman to jump into the R&B mainstream. She was daring and gained the respect and loyalty of the black community. Rick James produced her, but she definitely added her own thing to it. Fantastic. I saw one of her concerts which she opened for Madonna. Bad mistake by the queen of pop. Teena blew her away.

Black people ADORE, and I mean ADORE Teena Marie. If there were only one "Invited to the BBQ" pass to give out. She would get it before anyone. Matter of fact, she wouldn't because she has always belonged to us. I have never in my life heard anyone accuse her of being a vulture or a leach to black music. We always known this was in her soul and she has never ever disrespected us or the game. RIP to the Ivory Queen of Soul. There will be no other

Hi Arthur! I will admit that I didn't know anything much about her other than her name and this great song. When this was popular, I spent a lot of weekend nights in nightclubs, walking around dancefloors - beer bottle in hand, chest pumped, and sporting a somewhat conservatively spiked 'do. Ah, to be young again! This song is one of a few that always brings that happy memory to mind. I should investigate more of her music!

Teena can SANG. Once you dive more into her music you will see that her lane is primarily R&B. While black artists strived to “cross over” to mainstream popularity Teena crossed over to us. Mary Christine Brockert, aka Teena Marie, released over a dozen albums in her life, including one in 2013 that was released posthumously. "Lover Girl" was her only Top 10 hit on the Hot 100, but she had a slew of R&B hits in her career. If you want to go down this rabbit hole, try "I Need Your Lovin", "Ooo La La La", or "Square Biz" for your next one. I would also request that you check out Laura Branigan, who had a string of great songs in the early 80s. "Self Control" is my favorite, but "Gloria" and "Solitaire" are also bangers. Taylor Dayne! 100%YES! Very soulful voice also and still has it! Saw her on a I heart radio performance in 2017 I think🤔 I've suggested her a few times, unless I've missed it, I have yet to see a reaction to her stuff! But her and Teena Marie are soulful slayers!❤️❤️

The legendary Teena Marie whose range is incredible, she can rock out and then jump to R & B and move on to Jazz. She definitely one of my favorites. beyond the popular songs there is a volume of great music.

A "must hear" from Teena is "If I were a bell". It's a quiet storm classic.

Back in the dance clubs in the 80s this was one of the songs that if you were not already out on the dance floor or close enough to get out there quickly you were not getting on it, this was always a big dance favourite, and everyone loved it and you could not just sit while it was playing. Lady T was an absolute legend!!

YAAAAYYYYYY!!!! IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!! Singer, musician, songwriter, ALL that! You have opened a GOLD MINE! (Can you tell that I'm a Teena Marie fan?) Amber...you would LOVE her early work. I would suggest "Deja Vu, I Been Here Before" 💞...especially for female Friday ; and Jay, you would really love "Square Biz"! I'm excited for you...really I am! 🤩 Teena Marie has a very deep catalog...a beautiful one...way deeper than top 100. One of her first hits, "Behind the Groove", you both would really enjoy too. Have fun.

Great song, this coming from a metal head. If you listen to most 80's music, whether it be pop, rock, funk or whatever, they all had electric guitar in it. That's what I miss the most. Let me reiterate, they actually played instruments back then

Teena Marie collaborated with Rick James professionally, and they were engaged for a short time. The reason I mentioned Rick James is I think he's someone you should consider. he is a Trailblazer in Funk and has some really good music like: Superfreak, Give it to me baby, Mary Jane , Fire and Desire, Ghetto Life (Rest In Peace Teena Marie)

Really enjoyed this song, I haven't heard it in years. It used to be one of my favorites. I wonder if she had any influence by Prince? The song has a real Prince vibe. I have only ever heard this on the radio, to see her performing live is really fun, that girl was talented. :)

I was convinced Prince wrote this song, but no, it's all her.

Teena Marie Prince and Rick James "Came up" together in the early years of their careers, Prince was the opening act for Rick James on his tour in 1980. Jill Jones who was one of Princes Protege's, and is Teena Marie's Cousin, that's how she met Prince.

Rick James is rolling in his grave at the idea that his protégé was influenced by Prince, with whom he had a legendary rivalry...and not a particularly friendly one!

Saw her in concert in 1986, Sacramento. The opening act was the Together Band. Instead of being back stage, she was in the audience evaluating the band... I remember the lead singer came off the stage and offered her the mic and she belted his song better than he. When she took the stage, her vocals were LP accurate. All in all , an astounding performance that I was privilged to have witnessed in my youth. Salute to a legend.

Teena was signed to Motown records as a solo artist, but they weren't doing anything with her. Then, Rick James came into the office for some meetings, and Berry Gordy introduced Rick and Teena and the rest is history. You need to dig into her catalogue...she is dope
