This was funny. Clark wrote in one book that he knew the show was doomed when Fred Silverman put it on Wednesdays. He wanted Sunday, like Ed Sullivan. Silverman had earlier turned the show down at ABC. In fact, he ended up cancelling this and every show NBC introduced that fall. There were actually some interesting moments. One stuntman got hurt rehearsing a straitjacket escape. It would be nice if variety shows truly made a comeback.

Good stuff!! The announcer says this was taped at NBC/Burbank but Leno says it's the Comedy Store.

NBC presented "DICK CLARK'S LIVE WEDNESDAY" in the fall of 1978, and it was just a live run-of-the-mill variety show, with Dick as "Ed Sullivan" (did anyone REALLY want to see Buddy Hackett & Harvey Korman recreate an Abbott & Costello routine, in order to promote their upcoming NBC "biopic" movie, "Bud & Lou"?). There were some "surprises" as well, including a struggling young comedian named Jay Leno (he'd previously been a part of "THE MARILYN McCOO & BILLY DAVIS SHOW" in the summer of 1976).

1:07 Ho-ho-holy crap did that joke just fly by the audience's heads? Jesus Christ, comedy must have been high key if the audience was so restrained back then. That, or it's true that they add laugh tracks to all comedy bits today.
