If you watch an episode of The Tonight Show with Carson there is a 1989 Video where Jay is on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Leno is cracking him up and Johnny Carson tells him he is a really funny guy. I believe Johnny did have respect for Jay Leno he guest hosted the show a ton of times.

Talking about his parents here, makes you a little sad to remember his farewell speech when he was choking up talking about life after he started the Tonight Show gig: "The first year I lost my Mom. Leno when he was younger here seems to me to be brilliant. A great comedian, fast and funny. I am from the UK and have never seen these clips before, what a shame Jay became tired and old fashioned in his later years. The unpleasant business of the 2010 conflict ruined his reputation for good.

Carson was the king of late night comedy and Leno is in second place. They were both great! Respected all of their guests and could discuss a variety of topics. Fallon, Kimmel and Colbert are not even in the conversation. The three have all decided to have one theme to their act and that is to slam Trump. I don't watch any of them.

What Bob Newhart did is an act it's prepared material. What Jay Leno does as anyone can is just repeat funny things that happened in other people's lives like his parents. Keep it tight and pertinent but it's not an act it's just telling funny things that happened two other people.

Actually if you bothered to watched his show you would have discovered he never gave his political leanings when on air. He also had politicians from both parties and equally made fun of both parties. However, the same can't be said with current late night hosts. That's what made Carson and Leno the best by not stating their plotical leanings and being fair to every guest.
