Hey man, this was awesome! I must say, it feels like we pondered/thought about the same thing when reading this book! The second time i read it, i really stuck for the last part of the book where he talks about the many ways you enjoy hard work. I hope you have a great day, and please, continue your work! the format of your videos are really nice and it would be awesome to see this thing grow. By the way: It would be awesome to see you going through what you have for books/what you yourself recommend.

Fantastic video! One day I'll need someone to teach me how to do just a fraction of the things Dick Proenneke could do

Proenneke actually took two seasons to build his cabin. He selected the location and harvested the logs one year, and built the cabin the following season. He let the logs season, dry and shrink. That made for a more stable structure. He was also far from a loaner, he had fairly regular resupply- roughly every 6 weeks. He also enjoyed visitors. Not to mention he also enjoyed visiting friends. I would caution you to compare Proenneke to Kaczynski as well. Ted had some well documented mental health issues, along with violent tendencies. While Dick was not violent, and didn’t have mental health issues. Their legacies are polar opposites. Ted was convicted on three counts of first degree murder. Hardly a person to admire. Meanwhile, Dick’s legacy is now Lake Clark National Park, in which he played a role in establishing. The two men couldn’t have been more different.

Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! The overlap I find with Proenneke and Kaczynski (and Hamsun) is in some of their ideas but I accept their lives and and behaviour were radically different. Of the three I admire Proenneke the most as he put his ideas into action without harming anyone and he also demonstrated, contra Kaczynski, that you can get a book with your ideas published and read by millions without blowing anyone up. It pleases me also that of the videos I've done on each of these men, this video about Proenneke has performed the best. That being said, if I hadn't done my Kaczynski video I would not have learnt about Proenneke, because it was from a comment to the former video that Proenneke was recommended to me.

@@thecolonelpridereview I'm glad you learned about Proenneke and opted to look into his life. I would encourage you to explore further. If you ever get the opportunity, you can visit his cabin in Lake Clark, It's not an easy trip, but can be done. I attempted to do so in 2018, but was weathered out. We had a 4-day window, and could have gotten in by plane, but likely would have been significantly delayed coming out. We had a hard deadline to meet up with another group of campers. He was a man of his times when it comes to Alaska. There are several men who went there just after WW2 seeking a more independant life.
