I disagree. Very few people would be happy with his situation. Most would lose their minds, literally. Most people, nearly all, do not cope well with isolation from other people. International standards compare isolation with torture. Imagine being alone with nothing but your thoughts 6 weeks or more at a time and the monotony only broken occasionally by a copter pilot for maybe 15 minutes.

Many viewers wish they could live like this. It may be better to try it more like in "Swiss Family Robinson" rather than in a place with such hostile weather conditions. Millions of people live and survive quite well in tropical or sub- tropical conditions. Few possess the skills needed to survive as this man did. My wife and I blew off city life to buy a small 13 acre hobby farm, built our infrastructure, out buildings, fences, barn and two houses all after our kids left the nest. We were 46 years old when we took this new lifestyle on. Prior to that change we lost everything we had twice including our homes. We lost one of our children (one of our twin daughters) unexpectedly at two years old. That was 38 years ago. We are nearly 65, married 46 years and retired now (finally). Never regretted any of it. We raised calves, milked cows, took care of more than two hundred chickens, grew corn, potatoes, peas, beans, blue berries, peaches, figs, apples, plums, tomatoes and other produce. We raised dogs to sell as pets, learned to raise rye grass and put up hay. We learned to can our own fig preserves and to make fantastic pickles from our cucumbers.. We learned to butcher and to heat with wood. Not much money now but we ended up with a simple and comfortable life style that is all paid for. It has always been very rewarding. We made our living online and doing many things on the side. Neither of us has had to work a 9 to 5 job since 1995. We have been free! God gets all the credit, especially for delivering us out of many hardships and close calls along the way. He provided the income and resources to buy and build out everything we own. We started with $1,600 cash and a dream. That is all we had. If you want change go for it and make the commitment. Expect a lot of new education earned the hard way because it is not as easy as it looks. Before jumping somewhere off the grid and out of the system you best try it our way. You probably will never graduate to off grid living, few succeed at that. Same takes even greater survival skills such as solar, wind and conservation measures not to mention austerity measures galore! Also if you have a spouse you better be Best friends as we are because you will be spending nearly every waking moment together! Best wishes to you as you discover your new adventure.

The Woods and the Mountains: The daughter we lost was one of our two year old twins. We miss her very much even 38 years after losing her, but she is with God and we will see her soon. We no longer grow our food, just the fruit orchard now and a little canning of preserves. Our milk cow died of old age so we no longer milk a cow or raise calves. I miss that but the work of that is huge. We still keep a few chickens for eggs only. They are all pets with names so no more butchering. My health is going downhill fast but my wife is very spry and youthful so I believe we can hang in there for a long while yet. It is wonderful to own so much land but couples wanting this lifestyle must be willing to work very hard and also be prepared for old age when infirmity sets in making the work much harder to manage. I watched his film wen i was 8yo on PBSKids at 12am, I remember that day like it was yesterday. My parents went out clubing on a weekday, left me & my brother at my grandparents house. I made a comment over 3 years ago and got several responses plus lots of thumbs up 👍. Looking back I was told if you r always trying to get the perfect picture you end up missing a lot special moments. So true I have witnessed the porcupine Caribou herd over 2 seasons when stationed at Bar 1 or Komakuk Beach Dewline site along with Wolves, Grizzly Bears, Arctic Foxes, Wolverine Sandhill Cranes, Falcons, Beluga Whales and Ravens plus tons of migratory birds. Point is not a lot of pics but a lifetime of memories. Dick made movies but enjoyed priceless interactions with nature which he shared unknowingly with millions. A life well lived without worrying about 401 k, rrsp maple 🍁 beautiful scenery has no price.

My childhood was partly spent living pretty similarly to this in the Yukon Territory, at the time it didn’t seem to out of the ordinary to me it was just how we lived. We had a copy of One Mans Wilderness back then and I loved the pictures in that book as his cabin looked so cozy and I could look out our windows and see similar scenery and weather.

These videos were incredible for me to watch in the first place. Then I saw this man feed a wild bird in his cabin while making stew and and realized this individual truly did live a miraculous and peaceful life out in the Alaskan Bush. Moreso than any of us will in modern society with all of our luxuries. No cell phones or wifi and there is only the sounds of nature... beautiful.

I remember seeing the pbs show one night with Mr Proenneke and you could tell his attention to detail with everything he did. I don't think he knew what the term "it's good enough' meant it had to be done right or not at all. As far as the isolation goes I worked on the American built cold war Dewline in the Canadian arctic sector for about 10 years doing tours of 5 to 9 months with as few as 12 people operating a radar station. Summer could be nice but winter with 24 darkness could be pretty bleak when the wind was blowing at 60 knots and it was minus 55 centigrade combined minus 80 with windchill. I worked at several stations and always remember being in the Yukon which was less than 20 miles from the Alaska border on the coast of the Beaufort sea we did not see the sun for 6 weeks because we had the brooks mountain range about 10 miles behind the station. I was only in my early twenties and was told its ok to talk to yourself as long as you don't start answering because then you have become bushy and time to go back to civilization for a vacation. Not sure if people read comments but an old English mechanic I worked with was in the tail end of WW2 would say sometimes you just have to watch and take in the scenery because life is unpredictable.

Apparently he lived this life when I was a kid dreaming about the wilds of Alaska. Now that I am over 60 I see this through different eyes. I have been alone in the rugged wilderness, far from any other living soul. It can be an eerie feeling being so isolated in such unforgiving country. I think I would want some company, for a few reasons. But this gentleman seemed right at home with only the wild creatures as his companions. Quite a unique story.

Ive lived like that too. Been in the Alaska bush for over 20 years now. The complete silence does something to you and you find yourself exaggerating just about everything, including eating. You learn to live with the mindset of preparing for the worst and going absolutely nuts at meal time. You want to enjoy every bite and morsel while realizing it's not a dream, but reality.

I saw a Bigfoot in Dec. 1973 in northern Illinois. If I never see another one that will be fine with me. My next door neighbor saw one standing in a shallow lake in Wisconsin in the early 1950s. He only told me about his sighting after he heard me talk about mine. He didn't want to seen as some kind of nut. Me, I have had many "paranormal" experiences. I would have loved to spent 12 months there Untill age of 13 I grew up in a small village in South Caucasus, a village with 15 families , no running water or electricity Almost all men had some skills in carpentry, stone masonry & other skills, Winter would be anywhere from -10 to -25 C, and our best friend in the house was our wood oven & heater All food was organic, fresh bread or lavash was made by my aunty & grandmother, home made cheese, butter, yogurt and plenty of eggs and chooks I dreamed of escaping to a modern country and life style, BUT NOW I dream only of going back to my old village and life style

I thought I had seen all of the "Alone In The Wilderness" videos, until I came across this one tonight. I believe that Dick's brother did the narration on all the other videos, this is the first time I've heard Dicks' voice. I'm convinced that the series would not have been nearly as successful or pleasant to listen to, if Dick had done the narration. Sometimes I put a video on before bedtime, just for the soothing voice to take me on a wilderness fantasy.

So glad to see rifle and handgun as equipment available in the cabin. He ought to have had the handgun [assuming 44 or 45 cal.] with him when he went out filming the bears. Also surprised he used a fireplace where most of the heat would have gone up the chimney and cold could have come down into the interior ... instead of the larger camp iron stove that radiated much more heat.

I don't think that most people can identify with the type of solitude that you would be with every single day. You see what he does and it is a very condensed and edited version of what his weeks were like. Trust me when I tell you there would be lots of downtimes. Especially in the harsh winter. It seems as if he is canoeing and wildlife filming all the time in picturesque, fall-like weather. You would have to be very comfortable being alone. I am an only child and I am not sure that I could do this. It takes a very unique person to adopt this sort of life and be content with it. I have been alone a lot in the woods and although very beautiful I am always glad to return to civilization as crazy as that sounds.

@@blainwilson7937 I have lived alone since 1997, I am 78 years old. I live a life of extreme solitude, I am a recluse, I have no living family left. I have outlived all my friends and acquaintances. My 14 year old dog died four months ago and I don’t intend to get another one. I much prefer animals to people, but do not feel I can take on another dog with all the hiking I used to do. I never had children, consequently no grandchildren. I have never been much of a people person, I am extremely self-sufficient. I am perfectly happy being alone, and I have never experienced loneliness. Of course, I’m a little bit crazy but I’m not insane.
