Nobody is gonna mention that maybe why theyre so successful is they sell balls to anyone who wants them. Rods too. Usually plenty of openings as well. Is it weird that they also often have that "BJs" restaurant nearby? Sorry DSG names have consequences 😂 In all seriousness tho, its interesting to see their history. I wonder how they compete vs five below tho bc some of those stores have suprisingly decent sporting goods scetion and much cheaper plus theres amazon and walmart with their own huge share. Are they really going to do well in the future? Imo they should look into owning their own gyms and such as well. Thatd be my business plan. RN they may do OK but dging malls are a sign regular retail only works for so long.

As someone from Texas where we have "Academy sport and outdoors", which is now in a few other states. We got Dicks about 10 years ago. EVERYTHING they sale at retail is ALWAYS more expensive.... That's a good point. I'm impressed they've been growing in sales when I haven't seen anything that's a great value there in over 10 years. I'm in the Fort Worth area in the store close to me had a lot of stuff that it was all relatively overpriced. I'm not talking Walmart quality/pricing. I live in Houston and the biggest sports/outdoor retailer is a locally-started company called “Academy Sports & Outdoors”. We do have Dicks, but I don’t think they have an edge on Academy (kind of like HEB grocery in Texas having an edge over Walmart or Kroger). Texans have a thing for local, texan businesses. Dicks it seems has some experiences at their stores that Academy definitely lacks. Though it seems it's not enough to outdo them. I stand with my comment that they need to aggressively push towards experiences if they want to compete with gyms maybe a skatepark or something. Didn't even realize they had golf machines batting cages (I think) or climbing walls until I watched the video. But imo still not enough and I think not every store has it idk. I find Academy incredibly overrated for that reason though bc they are just a retailer and barely more where at least DSG tries to be more than just plain retail. Doesn't help thay theyre massively overpriced on many items. For hunting and such though I admit it's they seems to have the selection needed . Big mistake with DSG to not deal with it as DSG could then have their own shooting range and get a massive edge on Academy no matter how much loyalty the latter has. But DSG still has a presence and they seem to be massive and in bigger prime outlet malls where I do see them vs Academy in strip malls that seem to die easier.

True, they may not have the *specific* model of Amphipod handheld water bottle you're looking for, but they'll have one kinda like it if you need one right now. It's the last store where associates actually ask you if you need assistance. That, and their staff is generally very pleasant. And Public Lands is their foray into what I call "trees-and-trails" sports (REI's and EMS' market) as opposed to "teams- and-tailgates" sports (which is Dick's main focus). Since I pass one on my way home, I always reward myself after a visit to the dentist with a visit to PL. And yes, I used to shop at Sports Authority, Herman's and Modell's, as well.

All the Dick’s I have been too have been incredibly more expensive than any of the local sport shops near me. You keep mentioning they have lower prices because they are a national store, but I don’t believe that to be true. They just have a bigger selection. The only thing I ever go there for instead of a local store is baseball socks or to find shoes because they have a bigger selection. If I’m buying sports stuff they’d be nearly the last place I’d go.

I went to school with a member of the family who owned Galyan's Trading Post until 1995 (when they sold the chain to The Limited). We lost touch soon after high school; I wonder how he's doing nowadays. It was a big deal in the local papers when Dick's bought Galyan's, since they were founded not far from where I lived. In any case, the original Galyan's Trading Post remained open until they were acquired; the building has since been razed. There's now an Aldi standing where it used to be.

I live in Knoxville, where the 1st House of Sport opened! It is an amazing store and I go all the time!

Used to go fairly regularly. The organization was great, staff is generally knowledgeable, and the execution behind the “store within a store” concept was superb. Then they dropped the 2A stuff, and they dropped me permanently as a customer. I’m just a drop in the bucket to them, so it won’t make much difference. It sucks that the convenience of them around is gone, but fortunately there are many other options still available.

The Dick's close to me has turned into a glorified clothing store. Very little actual sports equipment in store.

This one never makes sense to me. They have the worst selection out of all the sporting goods stores. The ones in Michigan are always dead. They opened in a mall a new one near me a few years ago after the sports authority nearby went under. One of the guys who runs the malls says they don't pull half the customers as the store they replaced.

Never liked Dicks Sporting Goods. They don't carry the high end fitness apparel I like (UnderArmour is NOT high end, and has trended downwards in quality in the past decade, and made a mess of MyFitnessPal after they acquired it). Their home gym equipment is pretty budget tier as well. Plus their anti hunting stance is offputting to me. Sports Authority was so much better IMO.

Mike, would you plz do one on the new UFC & WWE merger? Maybe you can do a new series as companies make moves and say whether you think it’ll be a success and maybe take a poll in the comments (idk if you can do that) asking if viewers think it’ll be successful and why, etc. Whether you choose to or not, thx for what you do, brother! You’re kickin ass.

From NYC, never been to this store before in my life. It sounds similar to what Modell’s was before it closed. Thats what I went to when I played sports back in HS.

I stopped shopping at Dick's when they decided to go anti-second amendment several years ago.
