I think the death knell for Dick Tracy was the double whammy of the character already basically being dead to the public conscienceness by the 1990s, and being distributed by Disney.

I like the way this film takes noir. Like, Chicago for example, it's really colourful. Although, do you really need an origin story? He's a good detective who's dedicated to his job and wear's a yellow coat. I really want that coat.

Dude, the 90s seems like the anniversary decade. The classics of the 30s and 40s (Dick Tracy, Batman, Rocketeer, Phantom), Vietnam and the 60s, the swing revival, and golden oldies stations. It's funny to think there was other stuff going on. Damn I miss that decade.

The film was unique for it's time, even though it tried to copy Batman's formula. I do applaud how it to tried to look like a comic book come to life with the limited primary color scheme and the exaggerated makeup! Robin William's Popeye might also have been an inspiration! It also has another connection to Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin was orignally going to play The Kid, but he dropped out to do Home Alone
@PaschanTOPs2 жыл бұрын
It didn't try to copy Batman's formula. They were shot at the same time. This is a style of theatric cinema just like Darkman, Rocketeer or Dark City. And it looks like the guy narrating the video didn't realize Danny Elfman composed the music for this movie as well as Batman's.
@yavrielsechelle74319 жыл бұрын
Look up the painter Edward Hopper. He's the one who did Nighthawks. You mentioned the world Tracy lives in looking very empty. That was Hopper's visual style, and it's been said his urban landscapes captured the loneliness, isolation, and desolation of city existence in the early to mid 20th Century, the results of industrialism. Hopper has been described as a pragmatic, sober gentleman, not given to frivolity, or idealism. A misanthrope, even. It's easy to see the works he created coming from such a serious person. Perhaps Beatty chose Hopper's visual style, or more broadly put, the works of American Realist artists, to subtly depict the world Dick Tracy lives in as a way to reflect the seriousness of Tracy, and the tone of the film overall. It would make sense to have chosen Hopper's style, as it has been described as cinematic, and many directors have been quoted as being influenced by his works.

I loved this movie when it came out (I was 11) and must've seen it 4-5 times. I loved Madonna at that age. I doubt I would like it if I saw it today for the first time and I doubt I could recall the (main) plot with a gun to my head. I remember my mom being impressed that Madonna could sing 30s and 40s style music and that the songs were new (for the time).

Even beyond everything else, the fact that the palette of the entire film is drawn in strict adherence to a very limited Sunday comics color palette makes it a marvel of production design. It remains, to date, one of the most vividly faithful depictions of a comic strip universe.

Excellent review. I remember being SUPER into this as a kid. I had the toys and merchandise, and though I didn't see it in theaters, I used to watch it a lot on tape. Oddly, the lack of action never bothered me. I think I was too mesmerized by it asthetically to care with its colors and wild looking villains. Though a more action focused plot that utilized these awesome looking villains better might've helped work better with kids. As an adult I can see its flaws but I still really enjoy it.

I'll always be fond of this film. I'm always glad to catch it on TV. It's a familiar treat to me, everything from the performances to the soundtrack. The ending always gets me, that swell of music amidst the grinding gears, the whole thing's a fun homage to old movies... Heck, I don't even mind the Kid. They could've done a lot worse, Charlie Korsmo was great as child actors go. And you're right to note the visuals... this is one of the few movies I've seen in which an illustrated world doesn't seem to detract from investment in the characters. I was surprised to learn that Dick Tracy isn't held in higher regard nowadays. That's how it goes, though, you can never tell what endures in the public's minds and what doesn't... Hopefully eventually it can at least get a decent DVD release.

The faceless character is named The Blank.
@MysterioMaximus7 жыл бұрын
I had all the toys except the two vehicles and the Blank. I absolutely loved them as a kid. I was only 5 at the time, so I even remember thinking a brilliant idea would be to take a red Crayola marker and dotting some of my gangsters with bullet holes to make them look like they were riddled by a Tommy gun. I still remember finding the Mumbles scene absolutely hysterical. I sincerely love the movie to this day; in fact…I think I appreciate it more on a technical level now. The brightly colored noir scenery is simply gorgeous. The matte paintings are stunning! What Batman (1989) was for essentially replicating and lifting comic panels and live-action comic artistry off the page for “the dark,” Tracy was for “the light,” the colorful. I kind of see the two films are two sides of the same coin sort of how I see BladeRunner and The Fifth Element as visually the same in ways, just night and day. I think Who Framed Roger Rabbit (in ways) and absolutely Batman (1989) certainly helped green-light Tracy, the score totally has elements of the Batman march. Shirley Walker even later went on the score Batman: The Animated Series. It adds up, you're so spot on! I love the over-the-top radio drama quality; I’m just a complete sucker for 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s era serial adventure type characters. It’s why I also adore other cult flicks like The Rocketeer and The Shadow. Yeah…I actually like The Shadow flick…even with all its glaring flaws. I'm still holding out for a Doc Savage film and an actually good The Spirit! However, I'm not 100% with you on Warren. While I wouldn’t say he’s bad by any means, he just physically isn’t as imposing as he should be. It seemed a case of fanboy director being so overprotective of the character that he simply wouldn’t let anyone else play the role. The irony is, the film would have been better if he had allowed someone else…but that's just me. I still think he was of pretty darn good quality.

Such a fun gem. I still vividly remember seeing this in the cinema; the bright primary colors were so striking that it's always stuck with me. It's funny that this remains one of the few comic strip movies that actually looks like.......a comic strip. I also recall the Roger Rabbit short Roller Coaster Rabbit that Disney released with the movie. Scorsese was attached to direct until producer/star Beatty declined to give him final cut, and I still dream what Scorsese's comic strip movie may have been like. The marketing was rediculously intense; my family didn't participate, but friends of ours bought the t-shirts that would be your admission to the midnight screenings. This is still my favorite Elfman score. I hope this never gets a dark reboot, I think Tracy best fits this stylistic Technicolor dream world.

Good review. I haven't seen this one since seeing it in theaters. I was 15 and familiar with Dick Tracy having read the comics and seen the old 60's cartoon repeats. I was really shocked when Flat Top burst in at the beginning of the film and guns down Little Face and The Brow with no effort. Those were two very big Dick Tracy villains. It would be as if you were watching 1989 Batman and The Joker kicked down a door and gunned down Two-Face and The Penguin before you had a chance to meet them. I mean... why? I don't remember much about it other than a hungry kid, Mumbles being interrogated, Flat Top and Tracy punching and trading tommy gun volleys, and Madonna wearing more and more revealing outfits as time went on. I got done feeling that I had not really seen a movie about Dick Tracy, but a movie about hammy actors trying to outdo one another. Maybe now that I'm older I'll like it a little more with lowered expectations.

Huh. The music sounds like 1989 Batman, so they thought they'd throw us off by basing the visuals on... 1960s Batman? (Yeah, I know, the bright solid colours of both are referring to comics, and Tracy goes whole hog for the dramatic noir lighting in a way that the 1960s TV show does not.)

Oliver Harper I think your reviews are fantastic and I've come to look forward to watching at least one or two a day in the past several days. This one in particular, I really loved. As you mentioned I was wooed by all the prior advertising to the film release. Plus as a young teen at the time, I was a big Madonna fan, and had hoped this is where she would find great success as an actress. Maybe Breathless and Susan (Desperately Seeking Susan) were her greatest acting achievements...!? Your review here is spot on! I agree with everything you said here. Your reviews are incredibly diplomatic and not unnecessarily critical. Thank you you for sharing the information you've obtained. I thought what you did on the Superman movies, Flash Gordon, and Big Trouble In Little China were amazing as well. I love to hear your take on Bo Derek's "Tarzan" and "Popeye" with Robin Williams.

This movie came out when I was 6 years old. I couldn’t wait to see it and I wasn’t disappointed. I think that because of this movie I became a huge noir fan.

Really hope someday there's a remake to this. I don't really need a reboot. Just an exact remake of this non dark but seriously colorful epic movie.

I always thought this movie fell short and hoped for a reboot or sequel to make up for it. That hope passed on to The Spirit by Frank Miller but alas I was let down again. "There is no use making a cake look good if it doesn't taste good as well." - Me

Disney had two sort of nostalgic throwback films at the start of the 90s that are largely forgotten today, but still hold up really, REALLY well. This being one, the other being The Rocketeer. Which was clearly director Joe Johnston's resumé for Captain America 20 years later.

I always enjoy watching the movie, and what’s really amazing it really was jam packed with stars! Even small parts were filled by large names, just to name some were Paul Sorvino and James Caan, Dick VanDyke, Dustin Hoffman and so many more!

It's worth noting that Ian Wolfe was 93 at the time and this was not only his last movie, he also played his first screen roles in the 30s, i. e. the period the story of Dick Tracy takes place.

This was a very good movie. Very entertaining. I was familiar with the Dick Tracy comics and had watched the cartoon prior to the film's release, so I was very excited with this film's release.

No shit? That's awesome! I was only six or seven I think when this was released. I saw it in the theater but I had no idea they had shirts! Do you still have yours?

Regarding the lack of traffic on the streets, I was going through a 1990 Cinefantastique that includes an interview with matte artist Michael Lloyd. He says that Warren Beatty was purposely going for "inaction" to mirror the feel of a comic strip panel.

Danny Elfman/Shirley Walker - two composers who are tied within the Batman franchise. Elfman, of course, worked on Batman 89 and did the main theme for Batman The Animated Series. Walker, also composed several scores for episodes of Batman The Animated Series.

Highly recommended people check out the three book comic series of this movie. The first two books detail the rise of Tracy and Big Boy Caprice, the third book is the film's story. They're very well done and super colorful.
