Actually that was the final year of Dickey touring, so it was more of an end than a beginning. If you want to see a rebirth start with videos after May of 2000, first with Mark May on the other guitar and then later with Dan Toler. Dickey had a great thing going and then he started letting everyone go. I have to see he lost me after he started letting everyone go. Maybe he was exorcising himself of the demon after his exit from the ABB, or maybe he was just being a prick, or maybe I don't know enough to judge the man. Probably the latter is the best explanation in that I wasn't in the band so what do I know about what was going on and what Dickey was trying to do.

I saw Dickey in 1969 in the original band. I saw him again in 1974 with the Brothers and in 1975 with his Great American Music Band. His sound was pure and bell-like. Perfect, no overdrive at all just clean sound. It was amazing to hear that 57 Goldtop Les Paul ringing like a bell in a Bluegrass context. Vassar Clements and Chuck Leavell were both with him.

For all the clean and crisp you all speak of, In the first few minutes of this episode of Dickey and the boys.....The tone he exemplifies is wonderfully pleasing. Its both masterful and a great pleasure to experience in live performance and even for those who place a direct quality to audio excellence by keeping high quality stereo equipment. It feels live in every sense of the word. I can find no erroroneous junk played anytime I hear Dickey play. This is truly what music is all about. I am both in awe and in joyous envy of the quiet master who still plays with the vigor and arrogance of a man who knows no limits to the way the guitar can be mastered.

And during the show, he broke his high_E string, and for the rest of the show, I was looking at it on the floor of the stage, and I was determined to get it,,, and,,, just after their last encor, the roadies ran up on stage to clean up, and I was within arms reach of the string, but asked the roadie if I could have it, and he grinned at me, and shook his head a little, and handed it to me!!! Memories!!!

I love Dickey’s playing from the early 70’s but his playing and drinking were just ruining what the Brothers re-started in 89. I was happy to see him booted. I really wish Gregg had explained in greater detail how bad the rift was in his book. I was told by someone who was in the room that Woody almost beat the fuck out of Dickey.

I would be no more pleased than to demand that music come back to the righteous and abundance of this type of stylings. This is music at its most proficient demonstration. When they determined that the great masters of modern music had all died in the previous century. I was in great dismay. Till I remember that those of the allman bros had not all parished. I am glad that Dickey and his son and his band Great Southern had stayed up to the task of giving us music to enjoy.

As an original FLA fan who first heard the original ABB lineup in 1969, and saw them first play on a flatbed parked on the lawn of Miami Beach Convention Center, spring 1970, free, IIRC when they took a break from recording Idlewild South at Criteria just up the street from me, and as someone who has followed Great Southern, Sea Level, the various breakups, the Trucks/Haynes era, and interviewed DB in '76 for a "Rock Around the World" story, I gotta say, Dickey still plays his ass off, even at his age, and after some rough years. Kids, take a lesson from the master. His son Duane has learned well, just needs to loosen up and rip. In time. Great Southern's rhythm section is PFG for soloing over. Now that the Brothers are done, these guys are doing a damn fine job of carrying the torch, and keeping this music alive.

Unfortunately Dickey's unretirement in 2018 was cut short by frightening health problems (a not so bad stroke and then a terrible fall while recuperating that required surgery - all of which he seems to have survived thus far). Perhaps this layoff now may be "all she wrote " for Dickey's stage and touring life. In the past he has said he's an unhappy retiree, and lord knows he put on a lot of weight and aged more rapidly after his first retirement. In any event we should feel blessed in still having him around to send our admiration and well wishes to.

Dickey's old tone is back, before Warren Haynes, nothing against him, but his tone was too much gain/distortion, and not enough crispiness and definition, like before he joined the reformed Allman Bros in 89 or 90. I prefer the old crisp tone of Dickeys solos, prior to Haynes, Back when Duane was alive, he had a fatter sound, but it wasn't "runny" & fat/thick, with too much distortion like Haynes's tone., but it complemented Dickeys brighter & crisper tone, and Duane was a genius on guitar, too bad he is not around in the flesh on this planet, it would be imaginable. Andy Aledort, is an old timer also, and he is doing a great job. This is so refreshing, sound like the old and great Allman Brothers. Thanks for posting this video. The Allman Bros, are the main reason, I started playing guitar myself, I was so blown away at their sound, back in 1970- fusion, rock, and killer blues, and Dickey's country progressive, influence, wonderful.

Wow-eerie resemblance between the old man and his boy, huh? Especially when Junior started taking the lead around 8:30-that serious and intense, yet slightly spaced look-a bit like staring down the dark road ahead. I love Dickey's music, ever since I first heard the Brothers back at the dawn of the seventies. And this is d@mn near as good, as them Allmans were in their glory days. I guess if we can't have the ABB, Great Southern will be just fine, thank you. Hope DB can carry on the torch for a good while longer. Seeing how we have been losing so many old classic rockers and r&b greats right around that 70-year landmark lately, we're real lucky some of the old masters can carry on at such a high level.I guess it must be something about the blues and country-blues that adds to one's longevity.

Liz Reed - fresh and awesome as always. DIckey's signature tune that never gets old. Great leads by both Andy and Dickey.

Wow great quality! I was lucky enough to have seen this band long ago in this town at the Beverly Th. but unfortunately I can't remember when exactly it was. High Falls is one of my favorites. I saw the Allman Bros. play that at the Forum in Inglewood, Ca. in '75. Augy, San Diego

Great to see Dickey can still play when he decides practicing and playing are more important than his well-known demons.

I picked up that book you speak of here yesterday, and thanks to you I now really want to hear the heart of the book from the efforts of Duane s daughter and the history of the interaction of two very well documented guitarists. My first impression was that dickey sought duane for his session skills and duane sought after dickey because they gelled so well in the mediums of their past efforts. Love of music and appreciation of skill holds more worth in the earlier years, greed or popularity may be the jealously after getting to the top....but its the formative years that hold the key to every great player. Duane s brother Gregg....I d love to sit down with him and listen to the stories of a brothers love...... And of how formative ideas hold the length of a career and the ability to make music as the greatest reward. The rest comes in reward for the kind of dedication that's a mandatory requirement for any popular music musician. especioally in the modern day when music has actually shrunk its popularity base. and the variety of music that is played throughout the world...got very small over the last 50 years, because the masses have become very selective indeed.
