4 жыл бұрын

CLAUDE RUSSELL BRIDGES (aka Leon Russell) was born in Lawton, Oklahoma, April 2, 1942, and began playing the piano at the age of four. He began his musical career at the age of 14 in the nightclubs of Tulsa and was instrumental in creating the style of music known as the "Tulsa Sound." He took the name Leon Russell from a friend who lent him an ID to get into clubs, where he was legally too young to perform. Upon graduation from Will Rogers in 1959, he moved to Los Angeles where, as a first-call studio musician, he played piano with the Wrecking Crew, an informal name for the top L.A. session musicians of the '60s. He can be heard on many of the most popular songs of that era. He moved back to Tulsa where he opened The Church Studio, home to Shelter Records, bringing top artists to record from 1972-76. He then moved back to Los Angeles and later to suburban Nashville, where he died quietly in his sleep on Nov. 13, 2016, at age 74. He is interred at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa.
This sold-out concert was performed Feb. 9, 2019, at Will Rogers High School.
WILL ROGERS HIGH SCHOOL in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was built during the Great Depression and opened in the fall of 1939. It is named after "Oklahoma's Favorite Son." William Penn Adair Rogers, who was an American stage and film actor, vaudeville performer, cowboy, humorist, newspaper columnist, radio personality, and social commentator from Oklahoma. He was a Cherokee citizen born in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (now part of Oklahoma), about 30 miles from Tulsa. As an entertainer and humorist, he traveled around the world three times, made 71 films (50 silent films and 21 "talkies"), and wrote more than 4,000 nationally syndicated newspaper columns. By the mid-1930s, Rogers was hugely popular in the United States, its leading political wit and the highest paid of Hollywood film stars. He died in 1935 with aviator Wiley Post when their small airplane crashed in northern Alaska.
Will Rogers High School, an art deco masterpiece, is on the National Register of Historic Places (with historic significance). It has produced many graduates who have distinguished themselves in their careers-of national fame, personal achievement, or social significance. A list of Hall of Fame inductees and their biographies is available at: willrogersfoundation.net/.

I’m from Tulsa. First time i heard Leon Russell was in Quin non, Viet Nam, in Camp Keystone, in 1971. A soldier from Louisiana was playing a cassette. I’ve been listening to Leon Russell from then on. I believe that now and then, the cosmos opens slightly, and someone falls through ~ that’s how Leon Russell arrived on earth. My friend from Tulsa was Leon's drummer for several years & he told Leon what a huge fan I was as they were riding down the road in an old tour bus ( broke down as i recall) & Leon said call him & I'll say hello & thank him...The phone rang & it was Leon Russell thanking me ( at one of my lowest moments) for being a fan..We talked for several minutes & I told him every album I had of his..He said you left out the wedding album & I said I don't have that one but looking for a copy...Leon said don't bother he never was satisfied with that album..LOL..That was Leon..Just an honest & humble man..I lived in Mt Juliet Tn at the time of his death & attended his memorial.RIP Leon

I am 68 years old. I only knew Leon Russell from afar. There was always been so much music, so many books and movies, so many places to go, that you just can't take it all in. And, because of that you miss out on so many great things. The internet is a scary place sometimes, but it allows you to go back, and catch up with things that you maybe missed out on the first time around. Right now I am finally getting around to appreciating Leon Russell for the amazing talent he was. In this case, far better later, then never.

I’m from Tulsa and finally got to see him perform in Las Vegas (where I live now) about two years before he died. He was a great pianist and composer and very down to earth. One other note, I went to see the movie Papillon staring Steve Mcqueen and Dustin Hoffman, about 1973, I believe, and he was sitting with his wife Mary four rows in front of me with his cowboy hat on.

I’m also in my 60s. My story is the same as yours; I heard his voice and fell in love with the sound. I bought his record albums and loved them all, including Hank Wilson’s Back and the Wedding Album, not often mentioned. He had concerts at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa to celebrate his birthday, and I was fortunate enough to see him perform. I attended his memorial service in Tulsa, with so many musicians performing his music. It would have been perfect, but Leon wasn’t there.😭

I will never forget his concert in Fort Worth, TX, in 1973, opening for Traffic. He was dressed in his white suit & top hat playing a white grand piano. During the course of the evening Leon climbed up on top of his piano & sang while Steve Winwood played. Leon also played his guitar! I love him still. Stranger In a Strange Land is still an anthem. So proud of Tulsa honoring him. I loved going there, seeing Eric Johnson at Cain's and going to the Church Studio. Bought myself a baseball cap and my husband & son fight over it. Just ordered two more online. Love to Leon & Fans!

I gave a pristine perfect copy of "Leon Russel and The Shelter People" Lp to Leon to autograph (circa 1995). He handed it back to me with "on the road again" re-written on the lyric sheet in ball point pen for "Mad Dogs". He said, "Where did you find this perfect copy"? I said, " It's my other copy, waiting for you to sign".

I was born at the perfect time to hear Leon play and sing, starting with all of those artists he did session work for, like the Beach Boys and so many others. As a teen, I took in all of the steps he went through in the 60's, like Mad Dogs, Bangladesh, and so much more. As I heard Elton's introduction at the Hall of Fame, I had tears running down my face, and when I heard Leon thanking him, I couldn't speak. After a long, too long really, broadcasting career where I got to play most of those records that had Leon on them, I finally decided to learn some piano. I was later to that party than Leon was to that session, so let me encourage all of you who are parents to get a keyboard at the very least, and set you kid in front of it so he can make use of that period of neuroplasticity and get familiar with how to make those sounds and understand their relationships. Now is the time.

I've kept track of all the rock concerts I've been to (1972-2018) in my notebook from ninth grade, and Leon Russell is the guy I've seen the most! Six times!! I attended one hundred seventy four concerts SO FAR! He's my favorite piano player and his voice is one of a kind. The last show of his I went to was January 29, 2014 at the Oriental theater in Denver. I was wearing an old satin Broncos jacket. Leon started the show by yelling, "Go Broncos!" This made me feel special like I was meant to be there. He was down home good; he was great!

I love your note book. My repeat concert was Led Zeppilin for an even dozen and Pink Floyd close behind with ten. But I have seen Leon over the decades (8 x) .He lasted the longest as a show I could go to and always be uplifted. I used to attach my ticket stubs to the album that coinsided for the tour and then my entire collection was lost in a rough break up and I didn't have the heart to replace or even try. Thank God for KZbin so I can play my memory bank .I don't think there will ever be a more versatile period of music as the seventies, and it addressed our spiritual nature too making us well balanced and grounded beings. I have seen all the greats and they were more than a backing soundtrack, they were part of my life, like old friends. Till we meet again....

@@corny2103 Wow! I saw Led Zeppelin for three dollars and fifty cents at the Denver Coliseum on June 21,1972, the "Black Dog" concert (Led Zeppelin IV). Jimmy Page used a bow and played his guitar like a violin!! On September 17, 1972, I saw Pink Floyd for five bucks at Denver University; I was in the first row (it was general admission). It was the "Ummagumma" concert. My friend Donny "Pinky" Pekarek, climbed to the top of their speaker pile, and sat up there awhile! He lost his hearing for three days! We were in ninth grade! His neice, Neyla, has a rock band called the Lumineers.

Magnificent talent and tribute. Thank you. Leon literally played from his heart because I can feel it in mine every time. Pure, raw talent. Well done Sir Elton John. What you did for Leon speaks volumes to who you are as a person, may we all learn from your kindness to your fellow man and musician.

@@larrysmith6176 that is exactly it...that is what stood out in my mind an incredible rnr feel to it , so raw and explosive. judging from what i've hear the tulsa area was filled with jazz , r'n'r , rock-a-billy and blues and country, country/blues - in the 50's ie. lightin' hopkins apparently one of JJ's big influences.. it seems Leon and JJ were able to fuze those influences in their own creative way. then after developing their own sounds these two wizards came together... talk about talented - I miss the sound its like they were paying homage to the sound that came before them in a humble way but they added so much more then they or the world ever expected . Love how Clapton had that appreciation and wanted that JJ sound so bad thru his career ie Backless ...great how they finally connected with an lp in early 2000's nice chattin with you Larry happy holidays !!!

I'm speechless.... I grew up 5 blocks from is Tulsa house, 25th and Peoria, and I remember as a kid riding my bike with a good friend to Leon's house in hopes he would be there. We rang the gate bell and a woman's voice came over the intercom. After asking if Leon was home she kindly said, " sorry boys, he isnt here....". I do know had he been home he would come out to greet us. Tulsa was a bible thumping town full of mediocrity, but Leon along with the rest of the Tulsa musician's of the time gave it some sort of hope. RIP, you had a huge impact on this world.
