In 2016, the singer and actor RITA COOLIDGE was interviewed by director JOHN EDGINTON about the phenomenal JOE COCKER and his 1970 musical journey across America - the infamous 'MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN' tour with band leader LEON RUSSELL..
The interview was conducted at the Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles - formerly the recording studios of A&M Records, who funded the 1970 tour and where the rehearsals for the tour took place over four crazy days.
The interview was for the documentary JOE COCKER: MAD DOG WITH SOUL.
This is from the full filming session.
Director of Photography : Guy Mossman

Poor Joe Cocker. Thankfully he did have Rita to help him through it all. Maybe it didn’t seem like it at the time but those songs on that album are just raw energy you can still feel every time you listen to Joe’s voice. I still get chills listening to his version of Cry Me A River! It’s phenomenal! I am so glad they all persevered in the tour despite all the bad vibes.

We lived next door to Joe whilst he rented a house in Twickenham, London. Rita was there, about 1970, then again in 73, maybe 74. She was very kind to me, I was a kid then. Ahh, this was when rock stars fled the UK due to tax (supertax) reasons. If I remember right, Joe hardly had any real money back then, well that's what he told my dad anyway. Hi Rita! Patrick x

Been in lust with Miss Coolidge since seeing the documentary in a cinema, early 70s. And Leon! We were so puzzled by how much he clearly was in control. And it was never made public. Today his agents lawyers 'brand' charlatans would never allow it.

Love Rita Coolidge. Did she really write the Layla Outro?
@jeffryphillipsburns
@jeffryphillipsburns Жыл бұрын
Can we please not say “outro”? What precisely is wrong with “ending”? “Intro” is short for “introduction”. What the fuck is “outro” supposed to be short for? “Outroduction”? It’s idiotic and repulsive and completely and utterly superfluous and unnecessary. In any case, the story as I understand it is that Jim Gordon was caught using Derek and the Dominos recording time to make his own solo album. One of the cuts on that solo album was to be some version of the song “Time” that he had apparently co-written with Rita Coolidge. Gordon was told that his theft of studio time would be overlooked if he contributed the piece to the Dominos album. “Layla” is credited to Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon. It’s unlikely that any of the Dominos (other than Gordon) knew that Coolidge had had any part in writing the song. I’ve listened to “Time”, and it’s pretty mediocre song. It works much better as an instrumental spliced onto “Layla”.

Hey! You need to be a little more humble yourself. I’ve been making documentaries for 35 years . If you understood the usual filming method for docs - it’s to keep the interviewer’s audio low as it’s not intended for use in the final product. This interview was for my joe cocker film. It was never intended to be used in this form. However with KZbin , it seems there is a potential audience for long outtakes from “the cutting room floor “. Hence it’s here for all to enjoy.

@James_Bowie

Joe signed a Dee Anthony contract that said Joe was responsible for funding the tour. Clearly, Joe didn't read the fine print. In any case, he was not capable of managing a tour. As his manager and the producer, that was Dee Anthony's job. Problem is, Anthony only ever cared about himself and concert takings. Leon saved Joe's bacon. As you have heard, Anthony was not going to accept no for an answer. No one else other than Leon had the contacts, musical cred and leadership to be able to put that show together in the unbelievably short time (8 days!) that was available before the tour was booked to start. The villain in all of this is the asshole Dee Anthony.
