He got the position by maniupulating the aftermath of the South Sea Bubble (a bigger version of this scam basically). The KZbin series Extra credits made "It was Walpole" something of a meme amongst history nerds.

An additional fact: he is currently buried in Caracas' National Pantheon, where Venezuela's national heroes, including Bolívar, are interred. He has been mostly forgotten by the general public, but when he's mentioned it's always as a hero of the War of Independence. As a Venezuelan, I'm conflicted about this guy. He fought in the Independence War with distinction, but he then went to scam and screw over a whole bunch of people. I'm unsure if I should flip him off or not, so I guess both things cancel each other out.

Well... if you're a regular on our channels you should know that we try our best to not report the biased version of history. We're not perfect so we might miss something - but as you will see when Bathory comes out, we didn't miss your source's version of events in our telling of the story. Now, without the intention of getting into a long debate about this... the authors quoted as the biggest proponents of the conspiracy version of her story are Hungarians, and when you read the little texts in english that you can find online by them - they have a pretty clear Hungarian nationalist agenda... and to not get bogged down in some kind of national pride discussion; using Bathory as an argument for how unfair Hungary has been treated in the past is a bit silly. The Hungary of today has nothing, but absolutely nothing to do with Hungary of the late 16th and early 17th century. That's like saying that because we Homo Sapiens Sapiens are related to Homo Australopithecus, we're the same thing. So yes, History always runs the risk of being an interpretation of the times the author lives in and what they believe... so always check your sources, also who the source is.
