When this album came out the drums were the first thing i noticed and commented how they were too "crisp" too "clean". Rev just had a rawness that, love it or hate it, was A7X and even though I am still a huge fan of theirs, they just aren't the same.
@puppetmaster85518 ай бұрын
Love the Rev but A7X was so much more than him, he didn’t even do any songwriting until self titled so city of evil and waking the fallen which a lot of people consider their best 2 albums he just played drums.
@kai_henrik8 ай бұрын
@@puppetmaster8551 that's not true at all. Shadows and Zacky wrote the first album but after that EVERYONE contributed to writing the music. You are referring to SOLO composition, but you said he didn't write ANYTHING and that's not true, he did but not solo, but his contributions were huge.
@102ndsmirnov78 ай бұрын
@@puppetmaster8551 He didn't "just play the drums" like the others didn't "just play" their instruments. Being in a band is working together as a unit. They all contributed to the songwriting.

@@kai_henrik I mean he wrote his drum parts, Matt even talked about how Jimmy didn’t write on the first couple albums and they had to push him to write for the after COE. The rev was awesome and is one of my fav musician ever but way too many people give him most the credit for their music and act like he was the primary songwriter their entire history or some shit, I constantly see people talking about how “he was A7X”. I’m sure he had some input when they were creating their music but he mainly just played drums on the first 3 albums and didn’t take a big role as a songwriter until self titled
@Nameless-iz3ko8 ай бұрын
You cant blame Portnoy for that. That's is just a more polished production.
@avengethefallen148 ай бұрын
Portnoy does play well for the album but he’s missing the jimmy feel. Perfect choice to emulate jimmys style but no one can replace the rev. Truly one of a kind drummer
@AlexJasso1008 ай бұрын
FYI Portnoy played Jimmy’s drum demos to a tee. He refined them here and there bc they were obviously rough but it’s like 95% Jimmy. You should listen to some of the demos here on KZbin and compare them, they’re on point.

Love this track! It's classic Sevenfold, with elements from all of their preceding albums all throughout it. I also wish Portnoy had done the "double ride thing" in the hook riff too 🤣 but at least Shadows hit us with a good ol' fashioned "mmmmmmyyyeeaaahh!"

This is my favorite A7X song, never get tired of it!!! You like Thrash metal bro? I highly recommend my favorite Thrash discovery called Arcania, I suggest checking out Arcania's song "Dreams Are Dead" (or "Rise And Never Fall" if you want a music video) because it really showcases their incredible musicianship. Arcania is a French Progressive Thrash Metal band, I describe them like "If Gojira made Thrash Metal"!

thats the point bro. portnoy seems like "too perfect" but the rev fills would be so harmonized with the song. idk how to say it but you can feel it

I’ve heard people say that but I actually have no clue if that’s the case or not, if someone in the comments knows, feel free to enlighten me.

One of my absolute favourite A7X songs! Super solid indeed! I even like Portnoy's drumming though I get what you meant about him sounding on the nose. The Rev always had more of punk vibe going on and sounded more laid back than Portnoy and of course the Rev's fills were really from another dimension and insanely creative ;-) Portnoy's more of a Swiss precicion time piece which is excellent for a band like Dream Theater but Whackerman is a better match for this band as he's a more eclectic drummer which blends very well with the style of rest of these guys. Love Portnoy's work very much as well but his style just wasn't 100% right for this band ;-)
