yes, they gave the hair to the witch for a dagger. So the princess had to kill the prince with it otherwise she would turn into sea foam by the dawn. She tries while he's asleep and ultimately can't bring herself to do this. Then she simply accept her fate. Sad shit.

Lol I tried to do a 5 second animation of an eye opening and closing some time ago just to see if I could do it and how it would be and I gave up after like two frames… 🥲 I could never animate an entire movie by myself. But I also tried out stop motion animation in the way that the artist William Kentridge does (always using the same paper and just erasing and redrawing and taking photos of it) for a school project and it went better. I made it 1:40 min long and I had maybe 3000 frames in total. It’s not amazing, but it was still extremely exhausting. So, for a movie animated by a single person, this is actually quite ok.

Same- I'm really impressed. This is the best looking Asylum film AND its basically one guy. And that's... a lot of work and a lot to have created all alone. I think it doesn't look bad at all, the mouth movements and the death in the eyes is the major issue, if that was toned down, it wouldn't look like a bad film, a mid ranged one actually, very good for like KZbin quality to say the least. I'm pretty impressed with it. More so then that- I think if he had some help with facial animations and someone to make models, he could make movies himself and probably go along way. I'm pretty inspired actually.

Yeah, I get a split reaction when seeing the clips from this movie. It's not as good as a "real" film made by a proper animation team, but it's *way* better than you'd expect from one guy working on his lonesome. I mean, just compare it to the "Joshua" movie, which was also basically a one-man project.

So, about the hair thing. In the original fairy tale, the Sea-Witch is more of a literal bargainer. She warns the mermaid that not only will her human feet hurt as if she was walking on needles the entire time, but if she can't make the prince fall in love with her her heart will literally break and her body will dissolve into sea foam. When the prince starts falling in love with another woman, her sisters go to the sea witch and beg her for an out, giving their hair as compensation. In return the sea witch gives them a cursed dagger that will free the little mermaid from the spell if she kills the prince with it. However at the last moment she finds she can't go through with it, throws herself back into the ocean and dies. Yeah, fairy tales.

@SheilaDeBonis
@SheilaDeBonis Жыл бұрын
Right...except for the last part. Not that the little mermaid's death is wrong, it's just a little too simplistic to say that's all that happens. After she turns into foam, she's told by some voice that it's now her duty to watch over children at bedtime, protecting them from nightmares and heartbreak. So it kind of goes from one mythical species to another: the little mermaid becomes the little pixie... Or angel? Or sandman? But there's a reason Disney named her Ariel. She becomes a sky spirit. Anyway it's said the story is an allegory for a crush Anderson had on a (male) fellow writer after he rejected him.
@stevenhiggins3055
@stevenhiggins3055 Жыл бұрын
@@SheilaDeBonis So, the voice speaking to her was God (Hans was a devout Christian and many of his stories have religious undertones) and what she became was, I believe, a Sylph, and the deal was that if she did that duty for 100 years or something she'd get a soul, which is why she wanted to marry the prince to begin with because in exchange for being immortal Mermaids don't have souls and have to marry humans in order to become fully human and obtain one. As for ha's crush well, he wasn't rejected because he never actually confessed those feelings. He wrote them in a letter but never sent it because his belief in his faith wouldn't allow him to actively peruse a homosexual relationship. When the letter was found after his death the friend did say that he didn't feel the same way, but that he also felt sorry for the pain those feeling caused Hans.

@@stevenhiggins3055she essentially became a fairy type creature, and while doing good deeds and watching over the children she’d eventually be able to get a soul and enter heaven (in the little mermaid universe mermaids live 300 years but don’t have an immortal soul, so no mermaid afterlife) if during her travels she saw a good child the time it would take for her to get the soul is shortened, bad child, lengthened.

Anyone who has read the original Little Mermaid story will not be surprised by the hair plot twist. SPOILER FOR THE ORIGINAL H. C. ANDERSON STORY: In the original story, the little mermaid sacrifices her tongue (yes, tongue), to the seawitch to gain legs. However each step she takes will feel like being cut by a 100 or 1000 knives (depends on the version). On the third day, if she fails to kiss the prince, she will turn to foam on the waves of the sea. Her sisters gives up their hair to the seawitch to save their sister, an the seawhitch gives them a shell-knife that the little mermaid must use to kill the prince an she will turn back into a mermaid (and once again, depending on the version, regain or not regain her voice) and not turn into foam. The seawitch is not an antagonist, she is just a trader/dealer in the original story. Also the reason for why bodyparts are so important to mermaids: They don't have souls. Mermaids live forever, but have no soul to enter the afterlife (atleast in the versions I've read) So a tongue or hair is not something small. For all the mermaids truly have is their bodies. Also the sisters became fully bald. Like, no hair. And I think they could not grow anymore hair either. Also they, all of the sisters, had the most beautiful hair of all mermaids, and it was a big part of their self-identity.
@Nightman221k
@Nightman221k Жыл бұрын
You're description is very accurate and well done. The only thing that's different is that mermaids live a lifespan of ~300 years, not forever. They turn to seafoam when they experience death, but that's all these is they never go to heaven since they don't have immortal soul.

Pretty much, but none of the versions I have read really have a three day time limit, that only seems to be the Disney version. The only thing I head was that is the prince gets married to someone else she will turn into sea foam on the morning after the wedding. So she could be human for years and all she needed was to have the Prince fall in love with her and marry her.

I'm sorry, but throughout these clips from the movie, I felt so triggered by the fact that the mermaids didn't look like they were underwater- I can understand if animating things underwater is hard, but even SpongeBob was able to pull this off. There are MANY flaws when it comes to this one movie, but the water thing I cannot ignore. The mermaids and sea creatures look like they're just floating midair BAHA Edit: Alright, maybe spongebob isn't a great comparison since it's a 2D show with a higher budget, BAHA, I apologize- But still, I just really hate it how they look like they're just- Flying mermaids- At least add some bubbles or somethin 💔 AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE LIKES AND COOL "BRINE POOL" FACTS?? I think I know the reason Sereia has tattoos and various inconsistencies in fashion, and it's hilarious. Apparently, to prevent theft, some creators of human vrchat models often put tattoos on the base skin as an identifier. Often, they're overtly elaborate sleeve and chest tattoos. If one were good at texturing, it'd be fairly easy to replace. in fact, I'm almost too sure that much of this movie's assets are very likely purchased assets from various 3D stores, just animated in-house. While ordinarily this wouldn't be a huge problem, they aren't animated very well, which makes it all very obvious they aren't using their own assets.

This movie, if it was made by AI, is honestly a perfect example as to why using actual artists is more beneficial for a project than using a computer to save money. Problem with AI is that there no passion or heart. A computer has no love for what it’s making. It just creates. And I can promise you that when you’re making an animated movie, tv show, or whatever, it will show. No one will watch a show if it’s just robotic and soulless.

There is magic in the original story. Surprisingly, there are similarities with the original story. Mainly, that she goes to the surface on her birthday and that she gets in trouble for going alone, as well as swimming away when a girl shows up. Basically when she walked, it was like walking on glass. She had to kill the prince before sunset if she wanted to become a mermaid again, or she would turn into sea foam. Seeing how in love the prince was with his bride, she couldn't bring herself to kill him, and let herself turn to foam. However, she became a daughter of the wind, and as mermaids have no souls, she would have to work for 300 years to bring happiness to humanity, and would in exchange gain a soul and ascend to heaven. When children are good and make their parents proud, the daughters of the wind laugh, and they lose a day of labour they have to do. But if children are bad, they cry, and each tear adds a year to their work. And that, friends, is the condensed original story of the little mermaid. No talking fish, no evil witch, and The little mermaid didn't actually even have a name.

Huh... So if I heard correctly, Sereia said her sisters went to the surface when they were 15. That's... actually true in the book. Little Mermaid only knew of the human world from stories from her grandmother and sisters when they went up at 15. Disneys versions didn't have this so....1 point to Asylum I guess 😆. Maybe the AI was programmed to actually read the book

IIRC there is a prequel short story of Ariel's 15th birthday where she sees the surface for the first time as well; I think she meets Scuttle in it but it's been a long time since I've even thought of it

You know what... Based on what I've seen in your review, this version of The Little Mermaid is fine. It's not great, but it's not bad, especially considering the size of the team and budget. The first 3/4 of the story seem pretty faithful to the original book, and the plot twist at the end is interesting, if not very well executed. The models, animation, and environments are obviously nowhere near Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks quality, but they're not terrible.

I think the animation is actually fantastic for a single person. Like, that's actually insane. I am very impressed with that. If the writers put in a fraction as much work and skill as the animator did it would've been a great movie tbh

In a 1999 episode of “Hercules: The Legendary Journey” titled “My Best Girl's Wedding”, Iolaus becomes a merman, and he and the mermaid Nautica happily swim together. Then again, it’s possible that episode was meant to be a shoutout to “Splash”: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qX6pf6NqhpqGiLcm59s .

You know what? This kind of animation with some of these models would look AMAZING as a medium for a horror movie. Parts of it kinda remind me of stop motion, and a whole lot of stop motion properties can make something look extremely unsettling. For example, the short "Opal" from Adult Swim.
