We honestly undermine Ancient Indian Civilization, because we didn't use much major materialistic objects and western historians classify civilization based on how much material objects they use. Also, I have noticed, if a certain civilization reaches their pinnacle of development (socio-economical), they become more self reflective, self conscious, and have high integrity. My argument is that, if you have all your needs fulfilled, you will focus more on your mental/ philosophical needs (Maslow's hierarchy of need). If you see Scripture (e. g. Gita) , we focused more on integrity, saving of nature, being honest, kind to all humans and animals, treat everyone equally etc. A civilization accepts such behavior, when the people understand deeply about the mechanism of nature/universe. For example, we focus more on nature now because we know more about global warming. Last but not the least, an expert civilization can mix art, science, and philosophy so efficiently that common people will only see the beauty, not the underlying complex science immediately. For example, look at our old temples, those are insanely good arts. Upon close inspection, you will see that those are civil engineering masterpieces. At the same time, most of out colorful festivals, or designing are based on modifying nature (like we love gardening so much). We didn't try to control nature like western approach, we used to play with it. We accepted everything, be it from nature or humans, as blessings. Acceptance and openness, according to western psychology, are signs of very healthy and intelligent mind. A final note: When someone is intelligent enough, he/ she will no longer use weapons as first line of defence. And look, patience and peace mostly in our blood like an evolutionary trait. Even if we hold weapons, we talk first. Anyways, I wish, people could see that ancient India (also Egyptian, Mayan) was much kinder and philosophically advanced. May be they were scientifically advanced too, we just do not understand it.

Societies are more materialistic are either ignorant but happy or know they have a void in them they leads to philosophy to fill that void .
@soumyabratamaiti192 жыл бұрын
@@ssukhdeepkaur1783 ... I agree that materialistic approach is also necessary. We need both aspects and need to learn how to use them in a balanced manner. It's already mentioned in Gita, in terms of Vakti yog, Karma yog, Gyan yog. And we need to have balance in those activities (while being expert in at least one of them). Everyone becoming spiritual will cause the humans to have no purpose in this creation. And many of our philosophers focused on that too. But measuring everything in terms of materialistic scale may skew the perception towards other civilization, thus leading to classifications like : 3rd world country, illiterate country. For example, 1st world people say Iraq is backward country, didn't have culture based on their current lifestyle. But most of us didn't notice that Babylon, one of the advance civilizations in ancient time, was in Iraq. This subconsciously develops a notion in us that they will always be backward and stop us in letting them explore their potential. And the same is happening to us too. We are measuring ourselves, mostly, in terms of western materialistic scales. (Excluding balanced people like you). When we see that we are not winning the materialistic games with others, we subconsciously feel interiority complex, and mostly succumb to the rat races of society. A very few people do turn to philosophy in such situation, even if they do, that is just for soothing (like participation awards). Whereas, advanced society will keep both materialistic aspect and spiritual/ philosophical aspect with same priority, no matter the conditions. Like we always keep Gita as a beacon of truth even when many of us do not read it.

There is a story during Adi Shankara's time (it can be found in Kanakadhara Stotram) where he talks about meeting a very poor Brahmin lady living in a small house. The lady had no food in her home (only one piece of amla). That was how much she was struggling. In that story it is explained how the lady's past-life negative karma brought her poverty in the present life. Anyway, that story was meant to teach us the value of something other than economics of those times. There will always be some people (some individuals or isolated cases) who are struggling economically in any large country (even a resource-rich country like ancient India). I don't think it is possible to "completely eliminate" economic misfortune in the lives of individuals as there will always be a few people struggling financially during certain periods of their life. Even in the stories of Buddha who lived 2000 years ago there are clear references to some people struggling in his town.

There is no academic study ever done to ascertain historical gdp before 1AD. So, I don't know how can we even assert that we had a greater share of the World gdp without actual numbers or any study, even if we assume for argument's sake it was such, the world gdp at the time was very tiny compared to what it is now because most people at the time were nomads and agriculturists, after industrialisation that has changed. This is a apples to oranges comparison, it conceivable living standard were better at the time although it is certain it would barely even reach what the present day Chinese has today.

Not to mention, the ability to support a large population itself is a civilizational accomplishment (not a natural given). The agrarian revolution was no less of a game changer to humanity than the industrial revolution. Share of global GDP doesn't indicate standard of living of people. GDP per capita was very low. Check out gini coefficient during mughal rule. Amsterdam and London had per capita income more than Delhi during 1600s itself.

it wasn't very low it was slightly behind netherlands and england because of our high population share of global GDP does mean a lot there's a reason why europeans so desperately wanted to come to India
