Claire, the point you made about Henry VIII being so cautious about the mother of his future heir is really all we need to understand. Anne had so many detractors in court, that were it true that there was a 'deformity' of some (or even little) significance, it would have been played up. I am looking forward to your video on what she really looked like. In my mind's eye she was just frightened...always frightened. Bless her.

True. It's interesting to me that all these historical women are labeled some version of immoral, wanton, or capable of the dark arts. Mary Boleyn, Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth Woodville, Catherine Howard, Catherine the Great.... What continues to interest me is the general population's willingness to believe this nonsense. Yet the true villians in history [men] are often excused due to their religious convictions, their status, etc.

Claire, I discovered your channel about a year ago, I am embarrassed to say. How I never found you before this is crazy. I am yet another American who loves English (as well as Scots and Russian) History. I relish reading anything I can get my hands on related to these topics. My passion for Tudor History started at 13 years old when I read "A Crown For Elizabeth" by Mary M. Luke. I love finding the older histories in second hand book shops and muddling through facts and fiction while comparing them to current scholarly opinions. This brings me to your channel. You do exactly that for your followers. You present every scrap of evidence that is out there and let us decide with a "Claire Educated Opinion". No one has ever quite understood my passion for these Histories, and my many groaning bookshelves. I should have known that in Britain there exists a "Tudor Society"! I am completely enjoying all your videos. Each time I sit down and watch one it makes me feel a little like I'm attending a club meeting, not a lecture. Love your style.

The one detail I think may have some basis in fact is that she might have had some kind of swelling in the chin/throat area. This is based on the damaged portrait medal, which is the only definite contemporary likeness we have. That image clearly shows a long nose, high cheekbones, oval face plus a fullness in the throat/chin. I personally think that at least one of the Holbein drawings is also her, as it matches the medal (the one in a nightgown) and shows a full throat/chin, aquiline nose, long oval face and a pretty mouth with plump lips. If she was pregnant in this drawing, which is likely, given the nightgown costume (why not sit for a portrait if you have nothing else to do and no need to get dressed?) her face would show more fullness. The pose, almost a profile, does not show the line of her cheekbone on the far side and pregnancy weight would account for a softer look. She is looking down, so not the best angle to show off her eyes, but we can see they are dark and attractive. I do not see how John Cheke, who knew her, well as his patron at court, would have mistaken the identity of the sitter in this drawing! I also think she may have had reddish dark hair (rather than black) based on the likeness in Elizabeth's ring. We know she was brunette and dark but that does not equal black hair. It may be referring to her complexion and anyone who was not blonde was thought to be brunette in Tudor times. Looking forward with anticipation to your video about her appearance! Thanks :)
@anneboleynfiles5 жыл бұрын
I just don't see a swelling on that medal at all. Interesting!
@mcbrineart5 жыл бұрын
@@anneboleynfiles I think maybe it is more of a full jawline, the area between chin and neck - I see it on both the drawing and the medal - some people might call it a double chin, especially on the drawing, but I see it in the medal also, but without a crease. Of course, it could just be the facial structure with which she was born! I read somewhere that she might have had a medical condition that would cause increased fullness of the throat - of course, pregnancy can add weight to a face also! I do see a slight swelling in the area of her thyroid on her neck ... I read somewhere that there was some speculation she might have had a thyroid problem - hyperthyroidism makes people irritable, causes weight loss and slightly bulging eyes. I can't remember who called her a "goggle-eyed whore" and she certainly seemed to have a hard time controlling her emotional outbursts plus was said to have aged rapidly and become thin after her marriage. Hyperthyroidism could cause those effects - I think it was her enemies saying those things though, so who knows whether true. I am sure you know better than I do, so I am looking forward to hearing what you have to say about her looks - thanks!

I think daft rumours are gleefully passed on by teachers in order to keep interest levels up, and they're in turn remembered because they're so memorable. She could have had an injured finger/nail that did not grow back correctly. If cause and effect were known during her life then it would have been a non-story. But why would Sanders write about an extra finger, something that could not have been hidden at all times short of Anne wearing gloves always? Is there some significance to an extra finger? Why not some other peculiar deformity that would have been more difficult to refute? Maybe there was some folklore about SIX fingers? I did read in some book, sometime quite awhile ago, meaning I did not get it on the internet, that Anne had TWO extra breasts which were not fully developed! The author went into medical discussion on this deformity which is apparently known to exist. So I once wondered if Anne had a phantom twin which developed as part of her. But I fully agree with you that Henry would never have chanced a deformed son from union with a physically peculiar woman.
@TheAuntieBa5 жыл бұрын
Anna Morris Extra nipples with/without breasts are quite common; probably where someone got the idea. I’ve known two beautiful women who had no nipples and breasts at all. They were a bit shy about it, but I never heard anyone disparage them. In fact, it was widely known and their boyfriends were crazy about them and one couple were engaged to be married. My little toe has a split nail from years of work on my feet with no sitting and having wide but short feet which have to be cramped into shoes that never quite fit their width. The only people who ever notice it are the beauty therpists who paint my nails, in fact that was how I learned I had one, it isn't at all other wise noticeable even if your staring at my foot you wouldnt really note it's presence unless you where right next to my foot with your face or if I pointed it out too you. Just looks like a normal nail until you note a split down the middle. Wyatt's description sounds very much like my toe nail. I think a split nail is our likely answer, especially considering the crown never brought it up as a witches mark or unholy deformity when trialing her, and nor did Henry later when he himself smeared her name. I think if it where particularly abnornal we would hear no end about it from the accusers who where her contemporaries. Like with Richard III's now proven scoliosis, his accusors bring it up time and time again. But i think we can not disregard Anne's extra nail/finger, but instead conclude that it was far exaggerated, as most scholars disregarded Richard's hunch when it may have been minor but we now know indeed existed

What was the thing on her neck? My knowledge in the english language does not cover it.

Wow thank you when I 1st read about Anne having an extra finger, I thought that can't have been. Because of how superstitious the time was and he wanted a son so badly. Nope. I agree with you there is no way.

I was on a tour to Leeds Castle (from the US) and the guide told the group that Henry VIII’s older brother was named William or something.... When I tried to correct him he laughed and “Oh like King Arthur” and chuckled.... I am mad about it to this day. 😒😡

Never did I ever believe she had six fingers but she could of had a birth mark or maybe these stories was just made up because of jealousy and the king fell in love with her, she was also beautiful and dressed well.

Lots of people have six fingers, a couple families even have six fingers.

My biggest question about Sander's description of Anne. Why would a King (especially Henry VIII) marry or be attracted to someone with weird hands or features? Get real.
@MsKK9095 жыл бұрын
Henry would never have married her if she had 6 fingers..... she probably wouldn’t even have been allowed at court!

I find it hard to believe Henry would have married her if she had anything of the kind because the superstitious ways back then.. I signed up for your website years back and I'm curious the best way to know when you have posted? I dont receive any email etc. Do I need to sign up again? I really want to be able to cyber stalk all your work. Lol.

It's amazing how what began as propaganda about historical figures is still being spread removed from its context (yet that's treated as a modern phenomena...)

What I find hilarious is that Sander describes Anne as having a witch-like protruding tooth; a goiter; sallow skin and an extra finger -- & then he says that Anne was overall considered to be attractive! He seems to have been entirely oblivious to the contradictory nature of his description!

Never believed the tales about Anne's extra finger... or nipple! Like you said Clair, Henry would have never risk marrying a future mother to an heir who showed any deformity. As you English say, COMPLETE RUBBISH! I feel so sorry for Anne here. Attacking a woman's beauty is just so... spiteful. Years after her death too. Just hitting below the belt. Warm Greetings from a very COLD Maine, USA. Hope you had wonderful birthday, Clair. My husband and I love these videos. Thank you, Renee Parent

Well I do like to add a little humour into my videos, history doesn't have to be completely serious. Although I have been asked whether Anne was missing digits too.

Whenever I read or hear something that was written or said by somebody during Tudor times I follow this rule: When a Catholic is discussing a Protestant I don't believe it. When a Protestant is discussing a Catholic I don't believe it. All these things they claimed were irregular about her appearance were supposedly the marks of a witch during the Spanish Inquisition. So we can see where they were going with this.

So what you are saying is Catholic scholars don't lie? 5hat is absolutely ABSURD.

Would anyone believe that Henry VIII would be so smitten with the person Nicholas Sunder described? (Other than those who wished to smear Henry, Anne or Elizabeth)

I was apparently born with two bottom teeth already emerging, chances are in the 1500's I would probably been drowned at birth.

Very interesting as always I’d heard this story and that was why sleeves in that time had a longer point to disguise the hand Like everyone who is a loser in history false reports get heaped upon them

I only found your KZbin 2 days ago and I'm absolutely In love with it. I'm a huge history nerd and do historical reenactment. As a child being a redhead girl my Idol was Elizabeth the 1st as she was the only powerful redhead woman I knew about and as I got older I got more and more interested in her family especially her mother and I'm still very interested in them and your videos have just made me so happy to watch and learn from especially when it comes to telling the truth behind the myths. Thank you so much for your videos.

Of course Henry would have never married Anne if she had an extra finger. He would never have had a child with a woman with any sort of birth defect.
