I’m not religious, but I like these videos about human history and faiths/theology of our history. All the different styles and traditions that humans have created and so many details in all of them… it’s all very interesting! I believe Jesus lived, I just don’t believe he was the son of god. I read the very very first parts of bible and sorry but makes me chuckle a bit… why create a couple humans in this paradise but then (being the master of everything possible) create a certain fruit that’s bad? Why did god even allow a snake to mess up Adam and Eve… Basically it would be god saying “Ok I created you, you’re awesome and got paradise going on, ohhhh but don’t eat this one plant I created to be next to you but don’t eat it. (Then he created a snake or is not in complete control of the universe) Oh and don’t listen to the snake either!”… sure I get it was all a fake story, a fable that teaches about avoiding evil that can be great tasting or good looking or most popular and staying faithful to god’s word. Just saying lots of that book, for any religion, are half true or over exaggerated just for the main point ✌️😂

As I understood it, the logic behind December 25th was based on the first chapter of Luke: 1. The birth of John the Baptist is foretold to Zechariah during his period as a Temple priest (Luke 1:5-22) (unknown day). 2. Zechariah finishes his period as Temple priest, goes home to his wife Elizabeth and John is conceived (Luke 1:23). This seems to have been considered to be at the start of the Jewish New Year. Whether this is a leap in the dark I do not know but the Jewish New Year is often celebrated around 24th/25th September and the early writers seemed to have settled on this. 3.When Jesus is announced to Mary she is told that Elizabeth is "in her sixth month" (Luke 1:36). Add six months to 25th September you get 25th March. This is the date that they assumed Jesus was conceived on. 4. Add nine months to 25th March and you get 25th December so that was when they decided Jesus was born. I am not saying that I agree with this logic, only that this is how I think the early Christians came up with December 25th for the birth of Jesus.

The thing is though Gabriel told Mary that she would become pregnant soon, but doesn't tell her WHEN or that she already is. It doesn't seem like a same day event, so to assume she did become pregnant at that exact moment is an error. We know Jesus was born soon after the time when joseph and Mary had to travel to Bethlehem for the census because Joseph was from the house of David, so right there it couldn't have been in December no matter what. It's more likely that this merge with pagan celebrations occured because the Roman emperor Constantine was clever to unite his empire in religious tolerance instead of fighting against the growing spread of Christianity.

The depictions of Sol in Christian tombs and Jewish synagogues seems to me to be equivalent to the way we might depict the sun as having a happy face in current times. Not as "corny" or silly of course, it's a personification of the solar body that was not actually believed to be a living entity. It was just a way to depict the sun in a fanciful, traditional way. I mean, they could have just shown a round ball radiating its rays, more like the way we see the actual sun, but that's not very decorative or solemn enough for such a serious space. I don't think the people of that time actually believed the sun was alive in that way. It was certainly important to them, though, so they wanted to honor it by giving it a personality.

While this is not an exact analogy, I see it kind of like the decorative puti used in baroque design. They look like either cupids or cerephim but they are not meant to be perceived as such. Of course, I'm willing to admit that my whole idea is wrong. I'm just explaining m thoughts on why imahes of Sol might have been used in nominally monotheistic settigs.

He’s very informative, doesn’t disparage anyone. I like that. I’m a non-believer but see the value of faith. We can site atrocities or hypocrisy of humans during any period of time, regardless of what they believed or where they came from… I think it might be more difficult for non-believers to develop a moral structure than it is for people of faith. I’ve personally seen faith have more of a benefit to people on how they interact with others on a day-to-day basis than not, though. So, basically, I am an atheist who doesn’t like shitting on Christians. I feel like many who rebel so hard probably have experienced some sort of oppression, trauma, or persecution within their faith community

Excellent work! One question: In the video, you mention Sol's feast days were August 8, 9, 28, and December 11. Further, August 28th is they only date mentioned in the Calendar of 354 and represents the longest standing day for Sol Invictus. In all of your research, does the actual "weather" play any impact on the evolution of Sol Invictus? That is, it could be hypothesized that August is certainly the hottest months and would best represent the invincible sun. Anyway, great work as always.

You need to look at a climograph for Italy. You'd see that July is hotter across the peninsula. Same for much of Western and Mediterranean Europe. August is often hot but July is about a half degree centigrade hotter since records began and while these are post industrial revolution they predate the more substantial contributions of the 20th century meaning it's likely to have been the same pre-industrially.

First of all - I LOVE longer videos done by you… I am 100% up for more! Secondly, recently I became extremely interested in “evolution of religion” so to speak. What I mean is the topic of how religions across the world “evolved”. What are the mechanics that drives religious evolution? What were first religions? Why certain religions “survived” and why some didn’t? Why some (like Christianity) were able to “overthrow” other, older religions? I am aware that trying to answer those questions would be extremely difficult and would probably need a series here, but the religions had such an amazing impact on worlds history, civilisations and so on, that it would be amazing to at least touch these questions. I would be very glad if you d try to make a video or two (whole series would be the greatest new yer gift ever!) on this topic, as you being a real scholar on the subject would make them much better (no conspiracy theories about animism “the first religion”, much easier access to credible data and probably also other scholars)… just trying to give you an idea for content ;) Happy New Year!

Just gonna put this out there: I don't know when my dog was born, but I know which day we celebrate it. Getting the exact day wrong doesn't make the steak I get him any less nice and tasty. I chose January 1st because it was in the ball park and easy to remember. Wish people could get that about Christmas; even if we have the date wrong, the reason for celebration is more important than the specific date.

A couple of those floor tile decorations were astronomical/astrological depictions. I definitely saw Gemini, Taurus, Scorpio, etc represented. @@Gamefan86 The Christ-Myth theory which you are describing, is almost universally rejected by modern scholars (religious and secular alike) with basically all accepting at minimum that there was a historical figure called Jesus (or Yeshua, or similar) who lived in the Galilee and was executed by crucifixion (a common and brutal method common in the Roman empire for severe crimes). The Christ-myth theory (both in general and D. M. Murdock's version in specific) contradicts archaeological evidence (among other sources). It relies on an outdated form of religious studies which sought to analyse and unify different religious myths as being all coded allegories for the sun, a position now widely recognised as untenable and contradicting historical evidence. Remember, it is not enough to search for correspondences and supporting evidence for a theory, we must also search even moreso for contradicting evidence lest we fool ourselves with cherrypicking.

"Helios the unconquerable" sounds like it was just a simple translation of Latin "sol" to Greek "ἥλιος (helios)", both meaning "sun". Related to this, people often forget that these gods were the personifications/embodiments of these things people talked about in normal, non-religious speech. The sun _is_ Sol, the sun _is_ Helios, they use the same words when referring to both the celestial body and the deity, because to them they were in fact one and the same. It'd be crazy to read "I'm going to sleep" and think they're talking specifically about some mystical journey to the god of sleep.

From what I read of the ancients in their ideas of the gods, they did in fact equate objects and things with the gods that 'personified' or represented them. I think they considered the gods as the invisible 'essences' or 'persons' of the objects themselves - the powers of those objects, and thus the very (unseen & unseeable, & thus spiritual & magical/divine) means by which those objects actually interacted with other things. It really is difficult to really know all of the cultural context or what was in the minds of people so long ago. If there are ever future historians studying our time with as little surviving information as we have about many ancient cultures, at least some of them are totally going to think that "Lady Liberty" was a god and mistake tourists going to the statue of liberty as some kind of holy pilgrimage (I mean, arguably, in some sense, that's not entirely inaccurate, but you know what I mean lol)

Elsewhere politicians are seen as a bit dodgy and regarded as somewhat suspect (even by people who have voted for them) and they are certainly not venerated, if something like a school or public building was named after a politician in Europe, Australia, etc. there would be protests. So if an anthropologist in the distant future was studying America, they might well believe that American Presidents were seen as semi divine.

Ok guys. Elagabal: "El-Gabal Is a syrian syncretic deity made out of El: El is at points the God in the bible and according to some theories the basis for Allah, which makes sense since El was the one who hanged out with Abraham, only after Mt Sinai Judaism became Monotheistic and worship of El and his wife Ascherah became condemed. And Gabal: which is a corrupted version of the name Gibil which is one of the names of the Babylonian God Marduk. Now, the problem is, the only person I could use as a source for this is a lunatic frenchman from 1930. Antonin Artaud "Heliogabalus the crowned Anarchist" But I did some research and there is some basis to it: The connection between Marduk and Elgabal is pretty clear, from the similarity in the celebration with the black stone and the Babylonian New year. The connection between El and Elgabal is clear from the circumcision of the Priest and that they are not allowed to eat the flesh of pigs. Furthermore, Marduk was known as the Solar Calf(Golden Calf) and this would mean that the connection between him and El who was also worshiped as a solar calf in the Biblical book of Exitus. Was already established at the times of Moses. El who the Greeks identified with Saturn is such a enigma anyways, further research is needed. Sadly not many Theologist would dare to touch this topic, since it kinda involves implying that Allah might be Saturn. Which is kinda problematic, as you might guess.

We have to rediscover the past because of that. Prints of that tactic can be seen in architecture as well, for example mosques of the even newer religion (muslims) copied Hagia Sophia as Mehmet concurred Constantinople, now almost nobody knows the origin of the mosque... and it was very intentional...

Very well-done video covering this subject. It has changed my understanding, to a certain extent, on what I knew about the history of Early Christianity and the ancient Greco-Roman world. The Christians may not have stolen the December 25th date, but once cannot say they were not influenced by the other religions around them. No culture has existed that has not borrowed ideas or were influenced by other cultures around them, it is just a question of to what degree. The calculation theory I was not aware of before. Great and rigourous video! 1. I think it is clear that the celebration-dates on the "winter solicitice" (Winter > Longestnight) and spring equinox (Spring > days start to become longer than the nights again) have been taken for the same reason by the romans as by the christians for that very reason. 2. These dates are based on the babylonian astronomy/astrology and Zodiak, which was taken over and modified by the Egyptians, than the Greeks and the Jews and finally the romans, that didnt have their own mythology but took what they liked in philosophy and religion from the Greeks. The Jews were especially influenced directly by the babylonian Astrology as it was the big histortical enemy for the israelites. So they had already Purim (Spring, Pascha > (re-)birth) and Hanuka (Winter > need of godly protection). In the babylonian Kalendar these dates marked the time to beginn to sow (spring) and the time to start fishing/hunting (winter, Rebirth of the sun after an aparent death=longest night, the sun starts to rise again earlier each day and is so symbolicaly reborn) both practices in conflict with the nomadic jewish practices of the time. 3. the historical Jesus was an apocalyptic jew that didnt preach that he was the son of god or that he was the messiah reborn, but more like a "fundamentalist" believer in the god of the israelites to bring about the kingdom of god on earth during his lifetime, and who was identified by the Romans as a potential thread to their reign over the province of judea and could possibly raise a revolte against them, thats why he was crucified, which was later on interpreted as a self-sacrifice to save the believers from sin and give them a chance for the kingdom of heavean after all. 4. The reinterpretation of christianity in the 1st and 2nd century AD especially through Paulus and in the Gospels put the importance of Jesus as the promised Messias and his divine characteristics especially found in the virgin birth and the resurection after 3 days. These early eclesiastical christians kept this way the resurrection for Spring (when the days starts to get longer again than the night and for the conception=sowing the seed) on easter, and the jewish salvation promise for the winter solictice as birthday (not Rebirthday in Spring) as the two highest celebrations.

I always saw the link with December 25th with Christianity and Sol envictus with the fact that Rome practically took over christianity. The vatican is the main church. I grew up in a Pentecostal church but even as a child i saw how dominant the Catholic church looked so we celebrate Christmas just like the Catholic church. Great video. The idea that both Christians and pagans were using the solstices and equinoxes as their sources, instead of borrowing from each other's respective religions, reminds me of how I personally believe that the self-evident existence of vegetation serves as a more plausible basis for the similarities we see between so-called "dying-rising gods" like Dumuzi, Osiris, Attis, etc, rather than the story of Dumuzi borrowing from that of Osiris and vice versa, I think these myths are more rooted in a common understanding of agriculture and the seasons, one example being the idea that a vegetation deity is born during spring to copy the natural arrival of vegetation during spring, then the god dies in winter when vegetation dies and then the god is reborn or resurrected the next spring due to the return (or arrival) of the vegetation, and then the cycle repeats itself annually. I do think that Jesus fits this motif as well, and that he fits into a kind of "pan-agriculture" motif seen with many gods and heroes from different religious traditions around the world. The second thing I want to say is, I think it would be cool if you did a video exploring the idea that the Roman emperor Constantine's belief in the Christian god fits a pattern of previous Roman emperors already adopting other Middle Eastern gods, so perhaps Constantine's adoption of the Middle East God of Christianity was something more common rather than a new phenomenon. Some examples I can think of about previous Roman emperors adopting Middle Eastern gods includes: Caligula believed in the Egyptian goddess Isis, who was connected to the dying-rising god Osiris; Claudius believed in the Phrygian goddess Cybele, who was associated with the dying-rising god Attis; Nero believed in Atagartis, who was a combination of the ancient Ugaritic goddess Anath and the Phoenician goddess Astarte, Anath being closely linked to the Ugaritic dying-rising god Baal Hadad, and Astarte being closely linked to the Phoenician dying-rising god Adonis; Septimius Severus believed in the Syrian sun god Elagabal just like the emperors Elagabalus and Aurelian. I was just wondering if you had any thoughts on this?

FYI, the so-called “dying and rising god” motif is largely out of step with modern scholarship. Furthermore, it doesn’t describe Jesus at all. He was a man who died, then arose from the dead on earth.

​@@davidqatan There are plenty of stories and myths from around the world of gods and heroes who died and resurrected, either literally or symbolically. I think you're nitpicking for details and trees instead of looking at the larger forest. But there's nothing wrong with the details. There are different ways of looking at stories. Nobody knows who Jesus was, he could have been a real person who was a student of Hillel the Elder and Philo of Alexandria, or he was a real person who inspired the mythological and magical version of him in the Bible, or Jesus was invented by the Roman Flavian imperials, etc. I personally could care less which one is the truth. Even among early Christians there was disagreement, the Monophysites believed Jesus was only divine and not human, whereas the Ebionites believed Jesus to be human. The Ebionites also rejected the virgin birth, and the Docetist Christians rejected the resurrection and the ascension. Also, stories about death and resurrection have always been metaphors for the death of vegetation during winter and its return in the spring.

35:35 hold on. The January 6th (7) celebration of Christmas is tied to the use of the Julian calendar. It's still Dec 25. in the Julian calendar which, since the difference is 13 days, is Jan 7. in Gregorian.

Yeah this source is a bit off. The gregorian calendar was invented in 1582 but Salibi lived in the 12th century. If Salibi celebrated Christmas on 6th Jan using julian calendar, then nowadays he would be celebrating it on 19th Jan using gregorian calendar. Very different than orthodox churches that celebrate it on 7th Jan in gregorian calendar (even though it's literally the same as 25th Dec in julian calendar that Salibi vehemently criticized). How the heck did he even get the 6th Jan date?

Used to drive me nuts trying to figure out why they thought the solstice was the 25th instead of, say, the 21st, or any other day that it's much more likely each year. Was there some special, preexisting significance that made the 25th an attractive date? Nope: Turns out they were just a little off about when the solstice happened, and also their calendar was not the most reliable to begin with, because it was just Rome and what do you expect? Occam's Razor knicks me again.

Also star calculations for Solar maps change due to the Tilt Earth's Axis spinning around the Sun. Archeologist looking at star charts see differences in the places of the Zodiac and other Constilations. But with relatively accurate mathematics for that time. It has also been proven by Astronomy Scientists at NASA that the view of stars from Earth Surface change based off the angle starlight hits Earth. But I can't source where I learned that except for one NASA. declaration on TV and a OSP KZbin video. So investigate for yourself

Could it have been that these specific Roman Jews were simply not following traditional Judaism and were worshipping other gods? The Hebrew Bible regularly says that the Jews were always worshipping other gods, against the wishes of the Hebrew God as well as their leaders.

The Bible described the ancient Israelites sometimes turning to other gods like Ashera, Baal or Moloch. But they were henotheistic. They believed in the existence and power of other deities but worshipped JHWH as their deity. Judaism as a monotheistic religion only develops during and after the Babylonian Exile. And only after that the Bible speaks of Jews, e.g. in the book of Esther, as this name derives just from the tribe of Juda. The other tribes of Israel were already lost then. Anyways, for a monotheist to worship other gods means to give up their faith. It goes along with a certain exclusion from the spiritual community if it's found out, because you would be considered guilty of idolatry.

@@kadda1212 the worshipping of other deities wasn’t a feature of Judaism. The OT is constantly pointing their worship of these other gods as a lack of faith in YHWH and hence why they’re constantly being scolded by the prophets and punished. Monotheism is also a bogus category made up in the 17th century. They were monolatrous believing in many divine beings, elohim being the generic word for god(s) and used to refer to angels, other gods such as baal etc and even dead ancestors. Monotheism is an untenable concept from the Enlightenment that even many modern day Christians have unfortunately bought into even though they believe in multiplicity of divine beings themselves. It’s a performative contradiction.

December 22, and 23 are two longest nights. Technically, the 24th should be considered the first day of the New Solar Year. However, the sky watchers of ancient could not be sure of the "Return of the Sun", "Sola Invictus", until they observed the sun rise a few minutes earlier. . So December 25th was celebrated as the First Dawn of the New Solar Year. Ancient Star Gazers were very good at their job. It was they who gathered the citizens around , and announced the birth of the New Year.

Christianity began as sun worship, the stories about Jesus are symbolic. He is just a personification of the sun, made into a god figure later on. The sun "dies" for 3 days on December 22nd, the winter solstice, when it stops its movement south, to be born again or resurrected on December 25th, when it resumes its movement north. In some areas, the calendar originally began in the constellation of Virgo, and the sun would therefore be "born of a Virgin" The sun rising in the morning is "the saviour of mankind" The sun is "The light of the World" The sun "walks on water" is just the reflection of the sun on water/the sea. "He cometh on clouds, and every eye shall see him", is just sun rays. Jesus' "crown of thorns" is just the sun's glare, also know as a halo. The sun's "followers", "helpers" or "disciples" are the 12 months and the 12 signs of the zodiac or constellations, through which the sun must pass. The sun at 12 noon is in the house or temple of the "Most High": thus.."he" begins "his Father's work" at "age" 12. The sun enters into each sign of the zodiac at 30 degrees, hense, the "Sun of God" begins his ministry at "age" 30. The sun is hung on a cross or "crucified", which represents its passing through the equinoxes. The vernal equinox being Easter, at which time it is then resurrected. The reason why saviour myths are so similar with a godman who is crucified and resurrected, who does miracles and has 12 disciples, is that these stories were based on the movements of the sun through the heavens, an astrotheological development that can be found throughout the planet, because the sun and the 12 zodiac signs can be observed around the globe. In other words, Jesus Christ and all the others upon whom this character is predicated are personifications of the sun, and the Gospel fable is merely a rehash of a mythological formula revolving around the movements of the sun throug the heavens. OK, I made it for 51 minutes, also. One question I have are the dates for the solstice and equinox as compared to the present time. I'm assuming the earlier writers used a different calendar not as accurate as the one we use today, because in today's calendar winter solstice is December 21st or 22nd and vernal equinox is usually March 20th. Btw, great video as always, and as someone with a significant hearing loss, I enjoy listening to you because you are such a great speaker.

Yes we use the Gregorian calendar today while back then the Julian calendar was in use.

That "traditional date" probably predates even the Julian Calendar (which obviously goes back only to Julius Caesar in his days as Pontifex Maximus, the head priest of Zeus who laid down the calendar and was responsible for declaring how many leapdays were necessary (intercalaries) to keep the calendar synchroneous with the seasons. So roughly 50 BCE) Cause that is the problem, the Roman Calendar was VERY erratic; not that long before Caesar, they did not even have 12 months until about 200 BCE. Before that the best we can say points to ten months (March to December, which stands for "tenth month" anyway) and the rest was filled with a big chunk of such intercalary days over the Winter or not if they had no Pontifex or the guy was for some reason inconvenienced (like waging War in Gaul and Spain). Meaning that if you got anything wrong, the dates of such things like the Equinox would jump around pretty unpredictably. And as for all ability to observe nature they lacked a good form of reliable watch (best approximation were sundials and those are ... complicated with daylengths making the hours unequal over the year so you need to mark your scale accordingly OR accept hours of different lengths just dividing the sunshine hours into equal parts, like e.g. 12 hours) they probably gave up on trying to find the exact date of the longest/shortest day and went with a good, close guess instead. Or did things like Stonehenge and some egyptian buildings imply: measuring the most extreme points the sun is moving to and when they reach it it's time for your feast... With the Julian and Gregorian Calendars things became much more regular and predictable, then precise timekeeping came up too and so today we have slightly changing dates for the Solstice and Equinox that tend to fall around the 22nd of the respective months with the exact date only marking a small region where the actual day/night hourly length is indeed identical for that day and pointed to by a time for sunrise, i think.

Ok, just in the first half I detected various inconsistencies and incorrections, according to Herodian, which is a primary source on this... "In AD 219, not long after Elagabalus arrived from Syria, where he had been the hereditary priest of the sun god Elagabal in Emesa, Sol Invictus (the Invincible or Unconquerable Sun) was introduced to Rome as its principal deity. Elagabalus enlarged the Temple of Jupiter Victor on the Palatine and rededicated it in AD 221 as the Elagabalium (Herodian, Roman History, V.5.8), where the rites of Jews and Christians were to be transferred "in order that the priesthood of Elagabalus might include the mysteries of every form of worship" (Historia Augusta, III.4). Indeed, the emperor, sought "to abolish not only the religious ceremonies of the Romans but also those of the whole world, his one wish being that the god Elagabalus should be worshipped everywhere" (VI.7). "In every respect an empty-headed young idiot" (Herodian, V.7.1ff), Elagabalus, having impiously presumed to elevate a foreign god above Jupiter himself" so calling the cult minor, is a bit, let's say, flawed?
