In Sanskrit, "Shoka" means sorrow, grief, distress, etc. "Ashoka" means the opposite, that meaning free from sorrow, grief, distress, etc. It's ironic that King Ashoka, whose previous actions caused so much sorrow, grief, distress, etc. to others, was later plagued by those very same emotions. It's been awhile since I read about it, but I recall that it's theorized that the Greeks following Alexander introduced anthropomorphized artwork to Buddhism. The artwork we have before that date is more abstract and symbolic, like a footprint or bodhi tree. So, this argument went, the impact of Greek artwork on Buddhism was more profound than just how they carved their togas or certain facial features.
