Truth is Columbus sailed West because he already KNEW Earth was a sphere. They knew earth was spherical, so it stood to reason there should be a way to sail west to reach Asia, they just ran into the new world.

I haven't watched the video yet so I don't know if he covers this. Eratosthenes had already measured the circumference of Earth. Educated people knew there was no way to put enough food on any ship to be able to arrive at Asia. Had the Americas not existed, they would have starved to death before getting to Asia. That would be creepy to see...

@@crimm2465 The problem with this is that you don't have to go "around" the Earth where it is the longest way around to test the roundness. You can just use a latitudal line up North and have plenty of food left even if the Americas did not exist. That is (on accident) what the vikings did.

Canadians know what happened to Cabot. He and his first mate Yvonne were frozen in the northwest passage.

Good thing North American was there and had a land bridge to South American, Columbus would have sailed straight into the pacific to never be seen again.

Irving, not Irvine.

Not "Irvine", but Irving!! Washington Irving was a pop comedy writer responsible for such lies as Washington chopped the cherry tree and threw a dollar over the Potomac.

Every "Newfinlind" was killing me as I'm from there and it's pronounce Newfin'land. I know, all the other places take the "land" part and say "lind" instead, but we talk fast so we just shorten the "found" into "fin". John Cabot though didn't find gold or anything when he came here but the amount of cod in the Grand Banks off the coast was astounding and pretty much the reason why England bothered to come settle it, because you can't really grow anything here except out west where's some actual topsail because the rest was striped away long ago by the receding glaciers. You can't even put in a subway or you'd be at it forever digging through solid rock. It's importance came once they learned it was the closest point to Europe and St. John's harbour had an amazing natural defense being surrounded with an opening for ships to get through. French and English fought over it during the Seven Years War with a lot of the Western part having towns with French names. It became unimportant after the development of the jet engine which allowed planes to cross the Atlantic without needing to stop in Newfoundland to refuel. You'd might find it an interesting place to visit with St. john's being one of the oldest city in North America along with having the most bars per capita in Canada and we got 3 UNESCO sites: Mistaken Point has fossils of life dating well before the Cambrian explosion, L'anse Aux Meadows is the region where the evidence of Norse settlements as you mentioned, and Gros Morne national park has exposed rock from the mantle along with the central region of the island containing rocks once as the seafloor between northern Africa and North America when the Atlantic rift starting forming into the ocean with would become. There's a lot a cool stuff to find here if you're scientifically inclined.
