After a near 4 month break that everyone hated, Invincible Season 2 is back! And to usher in the second half of the season, they gave us what might be one of the greatest episodes of the series, Season 2 Episode 5, appropiately titled “This Might Come As A Shock to You!" A return that leaves the audience with one burning question: did everyone just die?! The Guardians of the Globe bite off more than they can chew as Rex Splode, Rae and Duplikate take on the Lizard League while Invincible, Atom Eve, Immortal and the rest of the team confront a sequid-controlled ship from Mars, thanks to Shapesmith. Donald also learns the horrifying truth of his body after confronting Cecil. This episode threw a LOT at us and I'm left with a ton of thoughts to share with y'all in this breakdown!

Rex's character was written so well in this episode. He's still douchey, but you can tell he's grown as a person and is genuinely traumatised by his experience fighting the lizard league. Can't wait to see the Show adapt his role in the invincible war ark.

Rae's death was a horror show. Tries to burst out of someone, only to get crushed to death inside of them.

She wasn't even trying to burst out at that point. She was dying in agony already from the chewing. Rex said "she doesn't stay small", not "she can stop being small". Rex probably thought that she was dead, but reverts to normal size when KO'ed. That makes it worse IMO, when Rex can hear Rae screaming and seeing Komodo survive her death.

Remember he was nearly caught by Iron Man's fire extinguisher system, he couldn't just get small enough to avoid it. And against Thanos, forget about it. I'll put it this way, what would happen if Ant Man tried that against Hulk? Remember Thanos is stronger.

Shrinking Rae was going for Komodo's eye like she did to Salamander. After Komodo grabbed and chewed her, she was dying and probably already not thinking coherently anymore. Rex may have thought she was already dead "Hey a-hole, she doesn't STAY small." Like Rex has seen her revert to normal size when unconscious. But her involuntary expansion, combined with her screaming and Komodo tanking it... nightmare fuel.

The NGoG knew they needed more bodies to take on the LL, but just showing up with more Kates wasn't enough. Cecil should have called up more heroes to bolster the NGoG. Sure they need training too. But just 3-4 random supes spur-of-the-moment should have been enough to tip the scales in their favor.

What i find cool is surprisingly enough Rex was shrugging off attacks from Komodo and Iguana. He was also fighting her while quipping and only started to take it more serious when Kate was calling for help.

I honestly feel like they would've have won with no casualties if rex and kate swapped opponents. Rex would have been able to beat komodo with his more powerful explosive and kate would've easily taken out Iguana.

@@DaWhisper Maybe. Komodo is pretty tough and Rex is kinda glass cannon in contrast. The only time Komodo got hurt was when he swallowed a bomb. Iguana could slice up Kates pretty quick.

Kate was assigned to Komodo probably thinking that he wouldn't have the stamina or agility to keep up with her duplicating. Plus, the protags didn't start fighting with the intent to kill. They only became blood lusted following Kate's death, leading to Rae rushing in without thinking at Komodo, who is also basically built perfectly to kill her.

The thing that's most upsetting about the Shrinking Ray Death is that it's such a pessimistic subversisive result to the stereotypical hero triumph trope the subconscious audience mind if expecting. You expect her to explode put of him triumphant, climatic, maybe injured, maybe near death but she'll otherwise be fine in the long run, with him defeated. Instead, it's this anti climatic she's just another victim thing that makes her her status completely irrelevant

Everyone talking about how Rae’s death was super brutal, but I was more worried about Kate. The emotions they orchestrated in that small window of time was insane. She got grabbed, so you’re like “duplicate” She can’t duplicate, so you get worried, only for her to kick herself free and get a clone out. You feel like “okay she’s got this”. Then you watch her primary get crushed and you realize she’s dead. Also, **spoiler**, but it’d have more emotional weight if the comic readers would shut the hell up about her still being alive thinking they’re being vague.

As a viewer of the comics...mostly through videos explaining the story, some of the changes I didn't see coming. If I recall correctly Thaddeus doesn't reveal the fact he is a Viltrumite until A BIG KEY moment in the series(in the comics) and show Debbie taking the news about Mark's Brother A LOT better than Comic Debbie did. This does prove a bit that Robert Kirkman, wanted to use the show to better explain stuff than the comic did and do some changes.

The Guardians losing to the Lizard League isn't just shock it definitely shows their inexperience, because they've actually could've won very easy by switching opponents. Ray picked right and took her guy down easy, but Rez should've taken the big dude by keeping him at a distance with explosives as we see later he was able to kill with a pretty small blast, and duplicate being extremely agile and having numbers on her side should've rushed the Snake Lady because she could barely keep up with Rex running from her so Kate would've overwhelmed her easily

Bro Kate and Rae's deaths both made me actually feel sick. Kate's death was just sad because I didn't think they would kill her off but Rae's death made me actually feel sick. Rex's reaction to both too was just so awful you can tell he was traumatized. One good thing though is I'm SUPER happy that Allen survived he's one of my favorite characters and I can't wait to see if he can beat up a Viltrumite.

@@Hop.entune those people all make sense tho. The story lines up with it. And those aren’t multiverse. The immortal is literally immortal. As long as his head is attached he comes back. Donald is a science experiment. And Allen’s powers are if something almost kills him and he manages to survive then he comes back as strong as whatever did that to him. Or something like that. It might be if he dies he comes back stronger idrk I’m just watching the show so I don’t know the full extent of his powers
