In the run up to and release of Final Fantasy 16 I noticed a small but growing part of the internet claim Square Enix's newest take on the famous RPG franchise was not Final Fantasy anymore. This is my response.

I was going to say. There is a clear division between XI and what came before it. This one feels like it tried not just with the visual insanity but also the story, even if some of it still feels more teenager oriented than I'd prefer for a more mature entry. This is, to me, the most FF it has been for a very long time.

I may be 7 years behind you, but I'm in the same boat. Granted, for me it was watching my brother play the original FF since I was too young to really do more than make a party of Black Mages because I thought they looked cool, wander around in the world a bit, get my ass handed to me because I've got a party of Black Mages, and then pop in Mario 3 or something. STILL! I loved watching my brother play it, and when FF2 (FF4) came out on the SNES I was finally old enough to actually have a concept of how to play an RPG so that was the first one I actually played, and that only solidified my enjoyment of the game (and RPG genre in general). When FF3 (FF6) came out, I was officially hooked on the franchise and indeed, to this day, I'm still loving the series.

Yeah, some more than others, but still. My favorite is FFVIII and it's one of the most hated games in the series, mostly because it is different from what came before it. If they did not change and evolve, then they wouldn't be on the 16th mainline Final Fantasy game, had many spinoffs, and a few sequels. Not many game franchises get to be around that long.

I dunno, trying to pin it down to any one thing as the reason, feels like trying to hide the forest with trees. For those saying that (clarifying, not me, I haven't played it), it's more a sense of everything being different, that they can't see any DNA of what led to this evolution. Yeah, the series constantly adapted, but most people aren't sitting down and making a chart to determine that each connects to 16. They "feel" like it's not. Having a guy named Cid and chocobos isn't enough to say, "Final Fantasy". Maybe for those people, enough planks have been replaced on the Ship of Theseus, that it no longer feels like the Ship of Theseus. And, yeah. Sometimes when you appeal to a new audience, you shed the old one. That's inevitable. If a series is always changing, there's always going to be a threshold where many old fans feel like it's no longer what they fell in love with in the first place. And if people "feel" left behind, you can't logic away their feeling.

True and it's great for an evolution of the mechanics, but that doesn't mean you are completely abandon the old mechanics. Old installments also had cast of playable characters 14 deep, most games had 10 plus towns where memorable moments took place. Hidden side quests that didn’t hold your hand and put a icon over everything. They had items list a mile long. Balamb garden, Triple Triad, the Gold Saucer, mognet central. The coliseum, traveling to the moon! Doomtrain!, the Figaro brothers. Blitz Ball, chocobo hot cold, Midgar!! You know the town so cool square decided they could make a entire game out it.. I think FF16 is good… but I honestly think you get the FF16 experience 3-5 times a year as far as the games formula goes. This year we have had Hogwarts, Star-wars and Bayonetta. To where if you want a AAA Final Fantasy type game that’s more like 4-10. Then you have gotten DQ11, P5, and Xenoblade in the last 15 years.
@FriedCassowary

No doubt. That's exactly how they would have been. We can look at FF7R and see that to be true. Think of all the dialogue we had in OG FF7 and how we got all that but in cutscenes with 7R. Also like FF7 and FF7R, we can see that true roots of FF isn't turned based either. Hell, according to the guys who started FF, it was never meant to be turned based. They just couldn't realize their full vision with the limited hardware and budgets at the time and settled for turned based. Okay then...final fantasy 17 is trailered. and it turns out it's a first-person looter shooter set in a futuristic sci fi world, it still has great characters and music...would that still feel like final fantasy or would you accept that perhaps there's a common theme and identity that runs through all final fantasy games which many fans resonate with. Nobody is saying change can't happen, but to dismiss the idea that all 15 games before 16 weren't party based had an element of command prompts, status ailment and strategy to fights is disingenuous.

@@HorusDeathtouch Well, it wouldn't be Halo. SuperLekan is asking a very simple question: How much can we change and how far can we take those changes and still retain that feeling of Final Fantasy? FF have had a formula and some common tropes that have become staples in the franchise. FFXVI isn't devoid of all of them, but it focuses more on a main character rather than a main cast. This also comes across in the gameplay, as there is no party. Despite the Eikons being elemental in nature, we don't have elemental weaknesses and any deeper strategy to bring into fights, and they become very samey over time. The equipment system is weirdly redundant, and since we're getting elemental based weapons with each Eikon defeated, they could've used that to have you bring certain equipment and Eikons into battle depending on the enemies you're facing. Despite the world being very beautifully realized, as of yet I haven't been presented with any real meaningful exploration or rewards - I haven't completed the game yet, though, so maybe that comes later? I like the game. The story, world, writing, voice acting and the characters are some of the best we've had, in my opinion. The game has some insane highs and some weird flaws. Overall, it's a great experience, but a lot of the things I look forward to in a Final Fantasy is lacking here, so I get the criticism, even if it's for different reasons than "no turn-based combat, bad game"
@HorusDeathtouch
@HorusDeathtouch Жыл бұрын
@jonasmemborg4196 It has all of the feeling of a Final Fantasy to me, because there hasn't been much in the way of exploration or rpg mechanics in 25 years. FF is about the journey with your friends, and there is a lot of that. There is definitely a party. There just isn't much of a party system, but you can even choose which party members join you later in the game, after some side quests. You have companions for the vast majority of the game, even with up to 4 or more in some instances, and doggo keeps you company in the minor instances between. Most of what is being mentioned regarding combat mechanics comes off as redundant, because the combat is fully action based. I can't remember the last time I played an action game where there were elemental affinities, status ailments, or the gear upgrades weren't straightforward. Maybe it's because I'm not only a hardcore FF fan, but a well-traveled gamer in general that I don't really care much what genre identity a FF game adopts, so long as it's fun, the music is masterfully composed, and the story is well-written. Tbh even if it's not fun, if the story engages my emotions I'll consider it a win.
@jonasmemborg4196
@jonasmemborg4196 Жыл бұрын
@@HorusDeathtouch I'm a bit of an omnivore myself when it comes to games, so I'm not a big purist in terms of the combat system having to be turn-based. I'm glad to hear the party expands with more characters later, but I miss the bigger main cast. There is a clear focus on Clive and his journey. And yes, we haven't had a proper doggo mechanic. A bold new direction. 10/10. xD I don't agree that there have been no exploration. XIII wasn't much to write home about, although there were optional content to find, but XII had exploration, XV as well. I think what makes XVI more contentious with fans is that Yoshida have mentioned wanting it to be the game that brings Final Fantasy back into the limelight and set a new direction for the franchise.

But because you are perpetuating the perversion of the term in a way that makes it impossible to use the term correctly. Gatekeeping is not necessarily a negative. Requiring a driver's license to drive a car is "gatekeeping". Not allowing people to call themselves an architect or electrician without the proper training/responsibility is "gatekeeping". It's hard to argue that people should be allowed to just "do whatever". About the rest of your statement? I was never arguing about any particular aesthetic. I don't yearn for a more "authentic" time. "Streaming" a game is not a "Let's Play". They are totally different format. "Let's Plays" didn't move to Twitch. They died (mostly), because people care more about the attention than the story. Not the PLAYERS necessarily, though there are plenty of attention whores among players. The audience drifted away in flits, toward a bright light that appealed more to their "I barely care about this" attention spans. And KZbin is a corporation, which never cared about the content, so it adjusted itself to maintain the highest profits. It is what it is. I, however, hate the streaming thing. It is a prime example of how other people's behavior stops me from having something I liked, because it isn't profitable enough to make any more. Even thought I SUPPORT the streamer making the change that is good for them, and the audience getting what they want. I don't have to LIKE something to support it. I still watch real Let's Plays. Telling a story through play. Their own, or simply roleplaying the game's characters. 45-60 minutes each. 150+ episodes for a series. (Sometimes 10+ seasons of the same game. I am one of the people that miss older final fantasies, but I'm not really vocal about it and it's some things that are very specific that I miss: - I miss the summons above all else. In FF7 being able to do quad summon Knights of the Round Table, while lengthy always felt so awesome every time it played. I fully understand why this is not in modern versions since no one wants to sit through that each time. - I also miss playing and controlling multiple characters, I want to make the black mage, the healer, the fighter. I have played FF7 remake after beating the original multiple times, and the swapping of the characters and the implementation still feels janky. I want more control is really it, maybe something akin to FF12's(?) ability to give non-controlled characters parameters or situations when they cast / attack with certain things. Above everything I understand the changes and the reasons for them, which is why I don't really complain like some online about them. But I definitely do have that nostalgia for some of the old school mechanics.

The series didn't REALLY start diverging until after 10-2. (they tried to make that claim in this video, but the core of the games was always turn-based (active time battle) controlling a whole party, and sci-fi/fantasy stories based around the crystals/elements/ancient tech and summoned monsters.) When SE wanted to experiment and change things up, prior to that point, they would just make spin-off series', such as FF Adventure becoming the Mana series, FF Saga becoming the SaGa series, FF Tactics, FF Dissidia, and Kingdom Hearts (even Type-0 fits into this mentality, since it wasn't considered a "mainline" numbered game.) In my own reply to this video I go into more detail.

@@Croyles I've been playing since FF1, and I don't recall any objections made to FF6, 9 or 10, as far as "main line" numbered status goes. FF7 did diverge into a more modern setting along with 8... and "more realistic" graphics, rather than big-head-tiny-bodies... which some people thought wasn't right... but I never considered those serious arguments... since graphics, to me, have never been an issue, and I didn't see much difference theme-wise with those entries compared to prior entries. They had some pushback, since the settings took them far from the medieval fantasy mix, and stepped heavily into the sci-fi/modern side. I understand that disconnect (and gear was becoming far less important). However, what you did in the games was the same as before - combat-wise, anyway (aside from the Draw mechanic, which irked many people). There's a reason FF8 is probably my least liked FF game, aside from FF2j... HOWEVER, I don't question their "Mainline" statuses in the franchise.

Final Fantasy has traditionally been an open world turn-based RPG series. There is a big difference between making some tweeks to the system or setting and completely changing the genre. FF16 isn't even an RPG, it's a linear spectacle fighter akin to Devil May Cry. To say that Final Fantasy can be "anything" is to say that Final Fantasy has no identity. Which means it is no longer a game series but rather just a brand label. If this is actually going to be the case then there is no reason to be excited or a fan of the series anymore because the series no longer exists.

Hi, A good place to start is actually Stranger of Paradise. What systems, mechanics & design elements did that game copy? What aesthetics, world building and lore did they lift? Fire, Fira, Firaga the new naming convention. In additional to many spells found throughout the series. Team Ninja is clearly made of people who grew up, or spent a lot of time playing Final Fantasy games. Jobs systems, characters, chocobo, airships. Even in Team Ninja's weird remake, reimaging they still tick typical boxes. Or Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. A primary complaint of that movie and FF13. Is both lack many features, staples & traits of the series. For the sake of argument... To me a FF game is deep & or innovative character progression. Magicite, Materia, The Sphere Grid, License Boards are easily some of the best progression in rpgs. Worlds & stories of fantasy, magic, science & nature. An ever changing series of battle systems. The most forgettable main cast of characters to helm a series. Except for a handful of characters. With buckets & buckets of weirdness. Now that said. Yoshida doesn't like the deeper rpg mechanics. See his years of comments as to why systems aren't deeper in 14. And i'm fine with that. Don't have a PS5. But 16 has turned out to be exactly the game I expected. Like down to the letter. Its a single player version of Final Fantasy 14. Combining stylish action combat with skill trees & lite rpg elements. And i'm fine with that. Take care & have a good one

You referenced Ralph's (SkillUp's) video: he mentioned that while we can still call this a Final Fantasy installment, XVI isn't remotely a role-playing endeavour. In place of character action mechanics, any nuance of role-playing is either diminished or excised entirely (no party members, no semblance of elemental weakness/resistances, no buffs/debuffs, lack of itemization) - no RP in an RPG-centric property. Had XVI not been made a numbered installment and was named like other FF spin-offs such as Strangers of Paradise, Type-0, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus and Crystal Chronicles, I don't think this would have been such an issue.

I could also argue that ANY JRPG removes way too much RP compared to something like... Skyrim, or Divinity. Ironically, the thing that attracts me to JRPGs over western RPGs is the fact I often don't have to play a nameless protagonist and the stories usually focus on character development throughout the plot. But they're not role-playing games in the sense that I'm free to make my character a rogue, or a wizard, or w/e. And 16 feels way more like a JRPG with its side-quests and towns than something like 13 which DID have all the things you mentioned in your list of what makes an RPG. Essentially you're making the same argument as the "not my FF" people: "not my JRPG." And to be clear, I don't disagree with you that the game's customization and itemization is quite lacking, I just disagree with your definition of an RPG. Tabletop purists would cringe and recoil at almost any video-game RPG if they were expecting to be able to do whatever they wanted like they can with pen, paper and their imaginations.

You brought up a whole host of issues... that nobody seems to really care about, but did not address the one thing that the majority of complaints are about: It is not an RPG. Anyway, here's my opinion on the matter: I think they should have given this game a spinn-off title, rather than a main-line FF title... They've done it with Crisis Core, Tactics, Lightning Returns, Dirge of Cerberus and more already, so why was there this pressing need to call it Final Fantasy 16? For me Final Fantasy means an RPG with a party, not an action game with a single character. I was not fond of how FF13 stretched this party issue and 15 essentially did away with it almost entirely. I love FF14 and have more than 1000 hours in it, but I still think it and 11 should not have been part of the main-line numbering, but given their own line. It's not like this is a matter they couldn't have seen coming either. The very same arguments came after FF13 and FF15 and to a lesser degree also Lightning Returns, but at least that had a different name and wasn't just called Final Fantasy XIII-3. And yet they leaned into the main-line title anyway, either because they didn't care, or because the marketing department expected the "controversy" to happen and work as free advertisment.

@@Isnogood12 what I would say is that the series used to be overtly much darker. 6,7,8,9 and 12 all in separate ways are all very dark, although 6 and 7 also have many moments of comedic relief. In my head canon they all die in 8 at the end of disc 1 - the popular fan theory. I know it is not the actual plot but it makes so much more sense to me. I have increasingly struggled with the trite aspects of the series. I struggle less with absurdist comedy moments in the earlier games, I find it much more natural to switch back into the grim dark of the real situation from stuff for example like the Honey Bee Inn or the Opera, than deal with characters that simply are inadequate to their situation, (Tidus, Hope, Vaan), and don’t grow in ways that really hit home for me narratively.

@uberculex
@uberculex Жыл бұрын
@@yoyomama99 That's bad faith, you make decisions based on typical character action games of stringing chains together instead of choosing the best time to switch to healing or focus on tanking. There is no player skill required for things like dodging and it's more up to your decision making during the fight and prep work on builds that determine success in hard fights rather than avoiding damage with well timed button presses. But if you pretend like things have turns, I guess anything can be turn based. ATB muddied the water but it is essentially turn based and 13 is an evolution of ATB where you automatically perform moves based on the roles you've selected.
@yoyomama99
@yoyomama99 Жыл бұрын
@@uberculex yet 16 still retains the FF trope of showing you the name of big attacks before it happens, allowing you to better prepare and memorize it, or heal up before possibly taking a hit. I know my argument can be seen as bad faith, but literally every move can be countered and memorized in 16, the only difference being there is an execution check this time. You can equip titan to prepare for physical attackers, possibly phoenix if you know you're facing a big beast so you can reach the head, you have decisions regarding how your skill rotation is and how will your stagger rotation gonna be like. I concede that you don't have to do think about the game to this degree, it being in essence an "action RPG", but the same goes for old FF games. People like to harp on turn based FF being "strategic", but in reality most of the time what you were doing then is just spamming your strongest attack and healing when your hp is low (believe me, i know my old FF). Newer turn based games are doing it way better, with decisions mattering more (Octopath, Bravely default, Trails series, SMT) and turns being more tight. The new FF7R is WAY more strategic than the old FF 7, while not being turn based and faster paced. On 16 they decided on even more pace and less strategy, with more execution involved. But there's still strategy there, if you are a player who loves it. But i agree that the depth of the combat is a bit shallow for my liking. Nb : 13 is one of the better strategic games that they put out, along with 12 and 10. Most of the old FF games are like what i said, spam your strongest attack and heal. If you wanna categorize 12 and 13 as turn based, i would say it's not the same turn based as the classic FFs were. They were noticably more strategic while also being faster paced. So i don't know what your definition of turn based FF is, because the depth of combat, in say FF 12 with the gambit system, is WAY more than that of FF 4, 5, 6.

4:54 I've been wracking my brain for days trying to figure out what makes this feel "not Final Fantasy" too me, but I think it comes down to lack of proper RPG mechanics (everything is so basic) and lack of really good party (so much of the game is solo, can't gear or spec party members, often forget they are there even). I get that this already changed with 15 but they fixed it later, and at least had much better combo opportunities. I've played every mainline Final Fantasy game, most of them multiple times, and they always have a moment, a point where I feel; yes, this is Final Fantasy. I haven't had that in 16 at all. This is Witcher May Cry: Chocobo Edition. And don't get me wrong. I think it's good. I'm quite enjoying, few chapters from finishing. I just feel this could have been new IP instead. And personally I have zero motivation to Platinum this. Weird thought, but I actually think by making this a mainline FF game, they are holding it back. It could've been so much more as a new game with it's own ideas and concepts, and dropping some mechanics I'm sure are only there because they didn't want to stray away from old FF entirely. 8:07 My thoughts here on the Game of Thrones thing. I just feel they took too much. Clive has too many Jon Snow inspirations, the presentation felt more like a movie than a game(even have cliffhanger fade to black transitions as if they were episodes), and the plot with Annabella and Olivier, c'mon, telling me that wasn't straight up GoT? Sure with a twist, but still...

The combat while good and flashy isn't very fleshed out for me. I feel like trying to do all these fancy combos doesn't equate to anything. Maybe if I was rewarded more experience based off my combos or something like a DMC, it's mainly just for arcade mode. I don't like the fact that there are no status effects anymore. Remember when Bad Breath did something? Now, all I do is fall down. Not being able to customize "party" members, be it abilities, equipment, or even the way AI controls is another thing. The sense of exploration is non-existent. I no longer feel the need to go out of my way in hopes of finding a chest with gear that would help buff my character. It's great more people are getting into it and are buying the game, that's the point, but it's just no longer a game for me and that's totally fine. There are a lot of games out there.

FF16 is a Final Fantasy game, sure. But to be specific you should call it an action game without RPG mechanics. There is no party system, equipment choice, jobs, magic, materia, skill grid. Leveling and equipment is purely cosmetic and has no choices or customization tied to it. Your next weapon has +5 more damage than the last one. The only thing you select is which 3 extra skills and 6 cooldown abilities you're gonna rotate through. When you get hit by Malboro's bad breath attack you only take damage, because this game doesn't have any status effects like blind, poison, confuse or silence. If you attack the fire bomb with fire attacks it does the same damage as any other element because no elemental affinities/weaknesses exist. FF16 is like playing Bayonetta or DMC but you only have light attack and one weapon/stance for the 40 hours it takes to beat it.

better to criticize the game for what it is, than for what it wasn't or what you wished it to be. the misses in this game: - gear and loot is off. it gets better mid-game once you have a larger number of gear that interacts with the eikon abilities, but tha'ts 25 hours in. for 25 hours you just have straight up simplistic upgrades, and bad drops from chests in the world. simple gearing was fine when you had an entire party to gear. doesn't work so well when you're just gearing one character. there's so many things the gear can interact with other than the eikon abilities -- parry, dodges, air attacks, magic attacks, physical damage, will damage, etc. but instead, most of the time, the gear is just a straight up upgrade: bigger number, bigger damage. -side-quests not having branching outcomes is a missed opportunity. since they're mostly divorced from the MSQ, it could have been a perfect way to put more RPG in this ARPG. -party AI. the enemies in this game are balanced around just your primary damage output, and torgals, and the AI party members only act, when you act. just stand still, and you notice they'll do nothing. they'll follow your lead, so you're the star of the show. the drawback of this is that most of the time, it seems they're doing nothing. they should look back to the party AI mechanics of 12, and KH1 and 2, and rebalance mobs to consider AI damage output. that way they don't seem like superfluous decorations.

For me, the reason FF16 feels like it’s left behind the FF formula is simply that it’s not actually an RPG. We started to see the writing on the wall with 15 when you couldn’t control your party and combat was far more action and combo-based, but 16 is an even greater departure. I think it’s fair for fans of the franchise to have a problem with this. If the next Resident Evil was made a turn-based or tactical rpg in effort to “bring in a new audience”, we wouldn’t blame Resident Evil fans for feeling abandoned. The same is true for FF.

Amazing work Jessie! Couldn't agree more. My favourites in the series are Tactics Advance & the DS version of 4. I think Yoshi-P and the team have done a stellar job!

Man this is everything I was thinking about to myself yesterday. Great video. The series is about taking risks and pushing the envelope. It seems every game is divisive at launch then praised later on after its had time to settle in people's minds

how are people not realizing that FF stopped being a full blown turn based rpg 20 years ago when 10 came out and they cut equipment down to essentially 3 types.

I think Skillup was particularly frustrated with the lack of RPG customization/elemental infulence/weapon build type things that you'd find in most other RPGs. Still you raise a good point and this is inspiring. Also Fans never agree on anything so this is just par for the course.

I think there are absolutely builds and customization, though, but it's in your Eikons (which also totally function as "jobs" from other FFs, if you break them down). Accessories also help augment and tweak these jobs to complete the build.

@@ZephyrFate It probably works for you but not for him. I will say that I'm a PS4 Pleb that hasn't played yet but wants to but one point of contention that I'm vexed by is that there doesn't seem to be any sort of element strong weak system in play. Like you can kill a bomb with fire attacks. At least according to Skillup's review. That just feels wrong IMO but I haven't played it so...
@ZephyrFate

@@HolyHadou There are no elemental affinities, but each elemental Eikon functions like its own FF job. I think it would make the combat annoying if weaknesses/resistances were also included. I also don't think these are fundamental to FF gameplay. Very rarely does the series ever force you to only tackle an objective through weaknesses/resistances.

@@ZephyrFate I get what you're saying but the fundamental complexities of an RPG when you exploit certain enemy elemental type matching was kind of a fun thing to work around. By no means solely an FF thing but not having it seems weird. And again, killing a bomb with fire attacks seems weird. But if you're having a good time... play on. I still want to give it a go but that requires money I'm not ready to spend.

This is one of the best videos ive seen this year. Not even a big Final Fantasy guy. The editing, writing, personality. Idk Jesse, you hit the nail on the head this one, happy to hear how happy you're feeling!

Respect, but you are missing something here. There is one thing that was always true. Group based combat and a character based story. All FF's had these two things. FF16 does not. That is what skill up was talking about and how he was correct.

I actually had very similar questions and arguments about how each game was different, especially in the old ones. Particularly the different battle systems which you talk about starting at 4:46! Great video!

I can't speak for anyone else, but I feel like the series left me behind with this one. It's a spectacle fighter now, and for people who want that, that's 100% okay. I don't just miss the ATB system, but turn-based Final Fantasy in general, where you have party members who you control, who each take specific actions you designate for them and aren't just on auto-pilot. This series isn't for me anymore, and I've accepted that. There's an almost infinite amount of turn-based RPGs out there for me to play.

May I suggest Bravely Default? The first two are trapped on 3DS right now but Bravely Default 2 is on PC and modern consoles. All three feel like the evolution of FF5.
