Crime victims usually pay the total; it may vary by state. My best friends son was murdered and his funeral was paid for from the organization. It doesn't mean my best friend shouldn't have a say so as to how HER son looked just b/c someone is paying. She didn't ask for him to be murdered and no, it was not related to drugs, ect. I went w/ her to the trials after she spent a year waiting for the law to extradite the punk back to face his crime. Yes, she was grateful, but #1 until you've have to bury a child, not much should be said on your end; but if so, say it with grace, b/c you have not experienced that and I hope you never do! My friend HAS NOT been the same fun and loving self, may be she'll find herself again, it's been 4 years now That's my opinion Good day!

Some funeral homes do not do a service if the families don't pay upfront. The fact that they went ahead and did the service in good faith says a lot about their funeral home. Edit: I meant this in a positive light towards the funeral home. Funeral home did not have to service them, but they still did, I'm sure due to the circumstances surround the unfortunate event.

I don’t think my family has ever paid for a funeral service up front. We sign paperwork allowing the funeral home to collect directly from the insurance company. We actually received money back from the funeral home the last time a relative died because the policy was more than the cost. And we usually have the wake at night and the funeral the next morning. They have to work both.

I never considered until just now how hard it must be to run a funeral home. You have to deal with people who are grieving and often unprepared to pay for the service, but you still have to run a business and get paid for your service.

Dealing with people during a horrible time of their lives is hard. I suspect they regularly are the targets of misplaced anger from grieving loved ones. This man seemed calm and professional. He understands she is going through grief and doesn't mock her even complain he's had to go to court to get his fee. He just presents the evidence of the contract and the payments to date.

My friend who has lost a child, told me it has been the most painful experience she has ever had. I can understand why most Funeral Homes require full paymemt upfront. I can't imagine the number of people that plan elaborate funerals and then back out of paying, thinking, "what are they going to do? Dig the body up?". That must be one of the hardest occupations to be in. Everyone is grieving, families fighting over money, and people only employ you when they are(generally) in the absolute worst frame of mind.

When my family buried my father in 2008, the funeral home accepted a check. In 2023, when we buried my mother, b/c that same funeral home had since receoved several bad checks from others, the only payment options were credit card or cash - which had to be paid in full prior to the funeral.

Yes, paperwork is essential for both sides. For my mother's funeral, I double-checked and asked if those were all the charges before signing. Two days after the burial, the funeral director called, saying that not all the fees had been added to the statement. I'd paid in full and wasn't going to allow that funeral director a single second more to try to take advantage of us at that very sad time.

When my sister died of Covid, my parents wanted her body transported from Chapel Hill, NC where she lived and worked, to Jeffersonville, IN where they live and where we’re from. The closest my parents received in an “oral contract “ was the cost to transport her body by road ($9.00 per gallon of gas) AND a next of kin must follow from Chapel Hill, all the way to Indiana and meet the funeral director immediately with my parents. Thats it. No other costs were discussed for the funeral to be conducted. This was only to transport her body.

That’s why you have insurance because the family can use the insurance to pay for your funeral. My friend’s aunt had a pre paid funeral arrangements and all the family had to do was the funeral program, who was preaching, speaking, what church, but the funeral home was paid . The funeral went smoothly, no fussing with family members etc.

I guess nobody expects to lose their child so early in life. I have heard of situations where the funeral home agrees to pay for the funeral & use it for a tax write off in situations like this. And that is a very cheap funeral and the grandfather paid the only money so far. I think it is totally inappropriate for this "mother " to sue since the grandfather paid for alot of the funeral and she was asking the community to pay the rest,all while she never paid a dime for her childs funeral, and then tried to sue!!! Pos mom!!
