What do we do with seemingly harsh judgment scenarios in the New Testament that seem like fiery stories of vengeance more akin to the Old Testament? Two Biblical episodes that cause people some consternation are in the Book of Acts: where Ananias and Sapphira fall dead at church, and also where King Herod is struck dead and eaten by worms.
In this week's video, John Crowder gives a big picture understanding beyond the specific details of these stories. He discusses how the "wrath of God" does and does not work ... reminding us that God only and ultimately looks like Jesus. John, as an Orthodox 21 year old catechumen I have to say you are probably one of the most inspirational and enlightening people I've heard in my life. Your "Charismatic Orthodoxy" is absolutely filled with a sense of traditional Orthodox Christian beliefs mixed with the 21st century while not compromising the gospel of our blessed Lord. So good! I so enjoy your emphasis on God’s Love! Such leaves no room for the monster god of Penal Substitution. Likewise, I was listening to Richard’s Rohr’s book on the Trinity called “The Divine Dance” and just encountered this quote…“To sum it all up, I do not believe there is any wrath in God whatsoever. It’s theologically impossible when God is Trinity.” Meanwhile, when it comes to stories such as the death of Herod or Ananias & Sapphira, I think the Scriptural commentaries of Origen of Alexandria are an excellent guide as they teach us how to distinguish the old covenant of the letter from the new covenant of the Spirit (2 Cor 3:6). Thus if we take these stories literally, they function as a ministry of death and condemnation and fear. They thus become the letter that kills (2 Cor 3:6-9) "But there is no fear in Love, for God's Perfect Love casts out fear, for fear involves the threat of punishment." (1 John 4:18) Thus if we want to understand these stories SPIRITUALLY, we have to press beyond the LITERAL surface level meaning. The mistake of fundamentalism is to embrace the old covenant of the letter as the foundation for new covenant understanding. But that’s not what Origen taught! Origen taught that as we follow Christ up the mountain of maturity, we will experience the Transfiguration of the Word from letter to Spirit, and thus behold the Word's true glory. Thus as that bridal veil of literalism and legalism and fear is removed, we begin to experience that Divine Kiss of Kingdom Revelation. Here the water of the Word is turned to wine, as we are invited to a Wedding Feast of spiritual revelation. Thus it is the gift of spiritual interpretation that like Joseph launches us from slaves to sons, and from the prison cell to the right hand of the throne (Gal 4:5-7). Thus as Christ redeems us from the old covenant of the letter, we begin to discern the mysteries of the kingdom! (Matt 13:10-13) Likewise, as the stone of the dead letter is rolled away, the Spirit of the Word is released from the tomb! For Scripture isn’t a mere history book, it is a book full of parables and myths that must be unveiled by the Spirit of God, if we want to partake of that “HIDDEN WISDOM” reserved for those pressing into maturity (1 Cor 2:6-7). And thus a terrifying Lake of Fire becomes a glorious Refiner's Fire, purifying away the dross of the old nature, so that Christ might be revealed in us (Col 3:9-15, Mal 3:2-3). Meanwhile, we can’t go half in. Rather, one has to count all that has come before as dung, in order to press into that which is greater. (Phil 3:7-14) Thus we must die to the old covenant of the letter, if we are to become true partakers of the new (Rom 7:6) "For in Christ are hidden all the treasures of Wisdom and Knowledge" (Col 2:3) As such, we are concerned about the DEATH of Ananias and Sapphira only because we are taking that death all too LITERALLY. But Paul said this… “For I have been CRUCIFIED, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Gal 2:20). The only way to experience Christ as our Resurrection Life is to DIE to the old self! Thus Scripture says, "For you have DIED, and your life is hidden with Christ in God" (Col 3:3). Ananias means GRACE. And a sapphire is a precious stone, like those that adorn the walls of the NJ Bride, signifying true works of righteousness (Rev 21:2). Whereas our OWN WORKS are flammable wood, hay, and stubble (1 Cor 3:12-13). Thus Scripture tells us how such will be tested by fire (1 Pet 4:12). Anyhow, we need to stop fearing the Consuming Fire of God’s Presence, and start learning how to dance in the flames! Because it’s only through our death from this Baptism of the Holy Spirit and Fire, that we truly experience His Divine Life refining us (Matt 3:11). For such is the glorious pathway of the cross!

Probably the most non - Orthodox, Orthodox Christian ever lol. I joined the orthodox tradition after listening to John and also I was tired of the charismatic legalism and just a bunch of nonsense. But I knew his presence his real and tangible then I started reading the Father's and I was convinced. Plus I enjoy the contemplative worship of orthodoxy and the rich inner life. So anyways thanks John for introducing me to The ancient faith and shedding light on the church as a whole throughout history and give us freedom and balance in our theology and to focus on the LIFE.

Please explain why you refer to yourself as a "mystic"? Please explain how that would be biblical. Thanks. Also, lots of talk here about grace and no mention that God is "Holy, holy, holy" and without holiness no man shall see the LORD which speaks to personal accountability to confess any and all sin and only then are we forgiven and our conscience cleansed (Hebrews 12:14; 1 John 1:9). Grace appears 170 times in God's Word and holy/holiness 654 times. Holy is the only divine attribute cited in triplicate, not once but thrice. Did grace change God's definition of sin? It definitely grants the abiding saint divine empowerment to overcome all sin (Titus 2:11-14; Romans 6:14). "Be ye holy for I am holy..." 1 Peter 1:15-16 ..... you seem to be minimalizing the breadth and length of holiness as Scripture reveals it. "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." (2 Corinthians 7:1)

The story of Aninias and Saphira has always tripped me up. God will let the sin take its course in a restoring manner. Makes sense. How else would we grow if we were always rescued from our wrongs. God doesn't wipe away conviction.

For further clarification study 2 Sam 24:1 and 1 Chronicles 21:1. One is The Truth and the other is the truth from man's perspective. In answer to the flood question. Like I said before, re-watch this video. The flood was an extrapolation of what happens to man in his brokenness and fallenness without a smidge of God's Hand (a.k.a God's Grace) involved to mitigate or stymie it. The flood happens when man is 100% left to his devices-is fully given over to exactly what he wants. Again, with the complete and total absence of Grace. God's Grace was in that boat and for the period of 40 days He limited it to that boat ALONE. But they refused to get on it... Do you want to know why we are not experiencing a flood right now? You guessed it, God's Grace!

You cant buy the kingdom of heaven. The whole new testament is about the kingdom of heaven and how it gives God pleasure to give us the kingdom of heaven without works for it was ours before the beginning of time which he bought back for us at the cross. No boasting is allowed. So why did those two come in boasting they were giving all of the money? When it was revealed they only gave some of the money. As Peter said, they were allowed to keep what they wanted and give the rest of it but they boasted they had given all. Boom, game over. They were setting a bad example in the body of Christ. That was nipped in the bud.
