Did Hoyoverse White-wash their own characters?

I feel like people get so angry at the idea of "blackwashing" because they have this idea that it's meant to insult white skin, but in reality half the time it's the opposite. So many of these designs are just insults to these cultures because "it's just skin!" cannot FATHOMABLY apply when it comes to MAJORITY NON-WHITE cultures. You cant always have everything be white and pale and eurocentric. What makes it worse is the fact that Hoyoverse has a thing with this. They have one dark skinned female character in one of their games and she's portrayed as a masculine brute who's daughter dislikes her. Her daughter is slightly tan and constantly talks about hating her tan skin. The fact this company keeps getting away with it because people refuse to accept the idea that "It's a Chinese company!" "Not every person part of this culture is nonwhite" doesn't excuse ANYTHING. It's blatant whitewashing of cultures that Hoyoverse has been doing for as long as they've been making these kinds of characters. (I also find the "it's just a skin tone!" argument so funny when these same people then cry with that skin tone is darkened.)

they make npcs and enemies dark skinned, but they can't make playable characters dark skinned

people keep using this excuse that hoyo is a chinese company, trying to appeal to the chinese playerbase though even the chinese playerbase is disappointed with natlan characters' skintones

I’m the most Irish person known to man, I have seen the Sun twice in the past year, and even I’m tanner than most of these characters. Even Chinese friends of mine draw their own characters with darker skin, so it’s not a cultural thing like some people want to claim. The Genshin Impact creators don’t think dark skin is marketable but still use the cultures of countries where the majority of people have dark skin.

I’m a person of color and I’m very disappointed on how then designed their characters skin tone. The region looks beautiful and colorful but the skin tones definitely need to be changed. Hoyo is trying so hard to appeal to a certain demographic. Also I like your oc :)

As someone who is pale enough that most people think im anemic, i think i can say genshin impacts designs look WHİTE. Like. The color white i refuse to believe thats a skin shade

First, sumuru disapointed me as an south asian/middle eastern now they going after Africa/south america (i..think?) is it REALLY that hard to make a darker skin tone? I mean, the ones we do have (i only remember cyno-) are just as liked as the white ones

I feel like I should've elaborated,,, It's funny because they have made darker ENEMIES. Poc is rarely represented with a good light in genshin. And even in Arlan's case they went and made a RESEARCHER have talents called "shackle breaking" and "swift harvest"

I have no I where to put this, so I'm gonna put it in this comment section, hope you don't mind. All I hear about is the skin colors which is important, but no one EVER talks about the mud bath of cultures that natalan is. I wouldn't mind if it was like how sumeru is inspired by SWANA. And actual group of countries near each other BUT THAT NOT THE CASE. And it's not really how some fantasy world just mix cultures to get a new one. BUT NOPE. it's just some characters and names. Like we have: West Africa Polynesia Mesoamerica (And maybe) Latin America That is already to much! Like WHY DID HOYO TOOK COMPLETELY CULTURES THAT ARE LITERALLY OCEANS APART FROM EACH OTHER? THESE CULTURES BARELY GET TALKED ABOUT AS IS. BUT FUSING THEM TOGETHER IS JUST A WHOLE NOTHER LEVEL OF BAD P.S, I love how in fictional versions of Japan (like inazuma.), they never ever include Ainu people...

YOU ARE SO CORRECT. I didnt get to say it in the video but YES its so odd that places like france٫ china٫ japan etc had WHOLE areas and archons and such. But all other cultures get shoved into one area 😭!

I think they were meant to have darker skin colors because how well their color palettes, etc are meant to compliment it. But unfortunately they had to make the characters white.

It’s so simple, if you are going to use different culture that aren’t apart of in your game, comic etc. It’s either you represent everyone of that culture or don’t use it at all. What’s even worse to me they’re profiting off of making a mockery of ppls culture

while i agree with this video, let me just respectfully say, that they way people are boycotting is fucking outrageous and stupid, WHAT do you mean “Go f2p queens!” YOUR ACTIVELY helping genshin’s economy and it’s growth because its a F2P BASED GAME. its not P2W. THATS HOW THEY OPERATE THEIR OWN SERVERS. and if you really wanna play genshin but actively boycott the game, play in a private server, because i am tired of people who are justifiably correct and that their reasons are absolutely valid only for me to be dumbfounded by how they take action, this is the main reason i stopped boycotting and left the drama is because how DUMB THEY OPERATE. just play Kuro’s games or on a private server if your that desperate, personally, i dont really care, but i understand why this is a horrible issue, but then again, ITS SUMERU ALL OVER AGAIN! That's very common thing to do for countries and regions that are arabics or south america inspired especially in fantasy.

That’s not really true, Mondstadt is very outwardly German in its design but also it’s sort of just a very basic medieval European country same as Fontaine. Fontaine is very in your face French, but also it’s just as much as a mix of many irl European countries as Mondstadt just with more of a steampunk aesthetic.

Huge fan of Genshin (play every single day, always say goodnight to that one character in the teapot kind of fan) and gods I'm so sick of how it looks like they have like, seven characters and just put them in different outfits. I'm so tired of it. I'm still excited for the release, I'm still going to play (mainly because I don't have energy to fight the addiction), but GODS. We need rep so badly. Hoyo is going to kill their company if they keep doing this. Also btw, I love your art :]

I feel like this is part of the problem though. Like I feel like we should do something like boycotting instead of complaining a bit but still playing the game. I doubt hoyoverse is gonna do anything about it if we keep continuing like that.
