You bought the right car . Body and interior perfect. Would check brakes have than bled might change pads. Change clutch change engine and transmission oil change plugs and radiator fluid. Recharge AC actually might should change AC gas from illegal Freon of the 80’s. Overall control and you have one of the best cars ever made by Porsche. Congratulations and enjoy.

I was at the auction too. As a previous owner of a 3.2 Carrara, I fancied the one without a rear spoiler. It didn’t make it’s reserve (a few 911’s didn’t) & I couldn’t agree a price with them afterwards. Watching your video has cheered me up no end. Thanks!

You have a rare 89 G50 Turbo! I'm building and modifying a 87 and 88, your repairs will be minimal and the low mileage means a lot. Change all fluids motor/trans/flush brakes and have your mechanic go through your 930. I would also suggest changing you clutch master/slave and look closely at your suspension rubber contact points. Enjoy!!

You are definitely right when say that what really matter is the pure driving experience, the sound, the smell of this 911. It is not the top speed, the fuel efficiency or the acceleration compared to brand new cars that will prone me to choose my dream car.

Just teething troubles from a low mileage classic, didn’t hear anything that you can’t easily snd relatively cheaply sort out. But it’s amazing to think you can get near identical performance now from a new VW Golf R, even Ferdinand would be shocked.

I worked in Porsche dealer in 1987 and drove a lot of those. Beautiful cars,a real giggle to drive. The one I’ve always wanted was the 930 with the factory slant nose option. We had a white one with Mediterranean blue interior with white piping on the seats. I lusted over that car, tried my darnedest to sell it but at $107,000 it was a slow mover. Now they’re rare as hens teeth and obscenely expensive, even with high mileage.

All air cooled 911's need sorting when you first get them. Additionally they need more maintenance then their modern counterparts. Being able to work on them and turning a wrench furthers the experience. Once setup they are amazing machines and you feel like you entered a time machine when you drive them. You made a great buy!!

That is a very very nice example. Regarding the AC, don't expect much out of it ever. My dad still has his 89 930 he bought new back home on the Gulf Coast of Florida. I don't remember the AC ever working in that car. There are modern compressors and condenser kits you can buy, but being in England, I don't see the value. As for your boost issue. We had an odd failure there. I was taking the car for a track day event at Sebring when the boost stopped. It took FOREVER to diagnose, and it was ultimately a collapsed catalytic converter. Hopefully it is the wastegate, but if not, consider having them check the cats.

Sure thing. Another piece of advice, which is probably true of all CIS Injection cars - these cars do not like sit and go traffic. We learned that sitting in traffic in Orlando on I-4 heading to the 24 hours of Daytona one year. Engine got hot enough that it knocked out some of the caps for the ignition system. I managed to get it going twice, and made it off the interstate where it cut out on me and I parked the car between a porn shop and a waffle house about 3/4 mile from the track. Funny Story - but, lesson learned.

Auction may save time up front but you lose all of that sorting out the problems that were not disclosed. I bought a Jaguar XKR coupe (gen1, 4.0 L w/ MB 5 speed auto) and when I saw the car up close I was both excited and repulsed. I could have refused the car, and had I brought a proper car aficionado with me, likely would have. Alas, I brought a good friend with no appreciation for the finer material things in life. I eventually had the car sorted out, and it was memorable, but all the time spent arranging and buying parts proved more than I care to repeat.

Just a suggestion, and if you already intend doing it, apologies for my haste, but as a serious enthusiast it would be nice to know more of the "details" such as purchase cost, repair costs and generally all the work you have done or intend doing. Whilst not financially in the same league, I have bought a few cars over the last couple of years that have been treated to pretty comprehensive overhauls and the costs do mount up, but do make interesting reading/viewing. I appreciate you may want to keep purchase price to yourself, but I believe if you know where to look, it could be found out anyway nowadays, and it would be good to know if you felt you bought below market value, on the money, or as is usually inevitable if you buy the best of something, over the odds to secure it? Either way, a series of running report's on your cars would surely be of great interest to your viewers?

Yes if you can get the car for a substantially lower price than a dealer and as Long as it doesn’t cost the kitchen sink to repair. Always enjoy your Videos Damian. I was never especially an 80's 911 fan - love the early cars and the 991 gen current ones. I've been lucky enough to have driven a few and the 930 turbo is one car i like, the 5 speed is a vast improvement over the early 4 speed cars now they really do try and kill you! The 3.6 turbo 2 is mega but we're talking a whole different ball game in regards to cost, you have definitely done the right thing, these cars are only going one way in value and im sure the small issues will be easily sorted. I owned a black on black 88 Turbo. The proper word for these is not a 930 turbo, as they were only called 930's before 1985. Secondly, the rear spoiler is the "tea tray" tail on the 911 Turbo. The 930 Turbos or just 930 had the whale tail. The reason they switched to your tea tray tail was to fit the larger intercooler. Cheers!

Doesn’t seem to be major issues, auctions always come with a risk, this is why it must always be purchased at low price unless you can make a full check before, or if you know the owner or car history. I didn’t catch the price you paid, but if you have to add let’s say 10% of its original price on repairs, this will be quite acceptable. It would be interesting to have a look at the contract/invoice/auction sale conditions, etc... because I kindly suspect you to use this story to make several videos and a legitimate buzz, which is quite « de bonne guerre » as we say in french, so why not, but I hope I’ll get more details and learnings in exchange ! I look fwd to watching next one and get more financial details ! Cheers 🎰

Looking at the catalogue description it certainly didn't suggest any faults - 'This Turbo has obviously been well-maintained and presents, both mechanically and cosmetically, in excellent condition' - That would say to me too that it didn't have any mechanical faults...

Yes. Trouble is, from their point of view, all this could have broken the moment I drove it down the road. Sold as seen means no responsibility once it's out of the auction's doors. There has never been any suggestion of a contribution for the work that's needed. Just means I WILL NEVER BUY FROM SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS again. So they lose out in the long run because - big picture - a bit of help now is chicken feed compared to the future fees they would have gotten from me.

Good for you Damian. They deserve to lose you as a customer. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a major auction house to be accurate and honest. Hiding behind small print and ‘the sold as seen’ ethos but failing to mention faults is, in my opinion, unprofessional and dishonest. The car is undoubtedly beautiful and you’ll get it fixed but I completely understand your disappointment. (Do you follow @torquespeak on twitter? A knowledgable and wonderfully pedantic Ferrari specialist, he often publicly ‘corrects’ the auction houses!)

Great video all round and such a gorgeous car. It really growls too, quite unlike modern 911`s. As you say, car was barely used, and its surprising more was not working on it, as Porsche`s in general hate sitting !! Hope its got fresh oil in it from the moment you picked it up, and that you have now sorted the Turbo unit and applied some love and WD 40 liberally around the car. Ha..Ha...

My all time favourite impact bumper 911 , nice comprehensive review there Damian , get the teething troubles sorted and it's a peach and only going one way in value, very jealous . If you get chance look for a movie called "No man's Land " made in 1987 starring Charlie Sheen , he plays a professional car thief that only steals 911's. A cult petrolhead film most people have never seen or heard of.

You did good there young man! I drove a 1977 Turbo back in the day, back in the 80's and going 150+ was not that bad really. You simply needed healthy balls, and a rotten brain! I recently purchased a 991.1 and would have loved to find a car as you have there, here in the USA. I just picked up a 2013 C2S. My first water cooled 911 after three air cooled 911's in the past thirty years. Cheers from California!

There was a time when buying at auction meant you paid trade value for the vehicle on which you were bidding. The idea being you got no comeback unless it was borderline fraud. Not these days for some reason, which seems like lunacy to me. Unless they are genuine rare collector pieces (50's 60's Ferrari race cars etc) the only reason you're offloading a car at auction is it needs work or (as is this case) recommissioning.

A little bit of tickling and you'll be enjoying it Damian. It could have been a lot worse. Just have a rethink on auctions, we're in some sort of classic car bubble and there's a lot of average stuff being sent across the block by dealers (with a story) that they just want to move on. I looked at a 575 Maranello recently with 22,000 miles on it. It had come from a "collection". It bore all the same hallmarks as this 911 you bought. It had basically been sat in a garage for upwards of 5 years and not really used much. Cracked tyres, duff battery, windows not closing correctly, check engine light on. Just basically unused, but also not completely maintained. I've come to the conclusion that a 40,000 to 50,000 mile car actually seem to drive better and are probably a better proposition if I actually wanted to drive and enjoy it. Next time you get the urge to wave at the auctioneer or bid on line ask yourself, if this car is so good why isn't it at a dealer with an appropriately inflated retail price?
