Over the years, I owned six 911s. So while serving in Afghanistan in late 2010, I purchased my 3.2 over the phone right before the air-cooled market went up in price. Without seeing it in person, I paid $15k cash (no loan) for my 100% all original black/black 1987 3.2 coupe w/50k on it. I had the car shipped to me from GA to TX without a PPI and when I finally got home in late 2011, I couldn't be any happier! I still have it.

You also bought the better 911. A little more power, and much better G50 transmission. I personally loved mine. I bought it in 2001 in absolutely mint condition and had a 97 M3 sedan with a 5-speed as a daily. The 87-89 was quicker than the 85s and the transmission was much better. Unfortunately I sold the the car in 2005 for an R32 GTR.

I had a chance to buy a 72 911 when I lived in Germany in 2001 for 12k. I argued with my wife (she wanted an 84 930 Turbo that was the same price and I didn't because it would kill her) and we yelled at each other and left. Soooooo mad that I didn't go back the next day and buy it. It was beautiful. Silver with a tan leather interior. Just basic but beautiful.

Yeah ok. That car would cost about $58k in Europe at the moment, where the true bubble is going on. The stupidest thing is that the 3.2 engine in good shape with recent rebuild alone costs here about $30k USD. And if you want to rebuild a 2.7 - 3.2 engine, the parts alone will set you back about $10k, if you manage to use the existing cylinders, pistons, conrods and crank... if not, prepare your wallet. And then we could discuss how much 964 or 933 3.6 engine costs. Air cooled Porsches are no longer cars for your average middle class enthusiasts.

I remember when my dad first brought his black '78 911 SC home back in 1988. I was 5 years old and it was the most gorgeous thing I've ever laid my eyes on. We treated it like a family car; my two brothers and I all piled in the back and we took road trips in it (yes, there was seating for 5; my little brother had to sit in the middle on what I liked to call the "hump"). He eventually sold it to buy our house. Never knew what he got out of it, but man, those cars are special and I miss it to this day.

I have a 1982 911SC. And I love it!!! Yes, it's not very fast, but when you're doing 65 mph, it sounds and feels like you're doing 80! I have driven modern 911's and a Cayenne Turbo, and they are amazing cars. But, I still enjoy my simple, under-powered 911 SC more! Thank you for your vid! It's a hoot!

This is a great video and took me back to a time in '88 when I bought an '87 wide-bodied Carrera 3.2 full convertible, complete with whale-tail, in guards red, black leather with red piping. What a car !!!!!! With the top down and 4500rpms the sound was just beautiful. Designed and built by engineers - NOT accountants !

I at first never really understood buying an old car that doesn't go near as fast as new cars until I rode in one of these. My uncle has a 1989 911 Carrera with the duck-tail spoiler and the front splitter (much like this one) and I just loved the experience, so easy to heel-toe downshift and the lightness and smallness is really fun on sharp corners, I really look forward to owning one someday.

I recently picked up a 1995 993 and I just have to say I am absolutely in love with it. It is easily the most engaging car I have ever owned. Before I bought it, I was looking at SC’s, then 3.2’s and when I finally decided it was gonna cost in the high $40’s to get what I wanted in terms of condition, I just decided to step up to the 993. I’m so glad I did.

The 911 is the epitome of a true sports car. Not the prettiest, fastest or even most reliable sports car. But it is an example of great engineering and passion. A timex is cheaper and more reliable than a submariner while performing the same task, but there is passion or craftsmanship. Same thing with all 911’s.

Mechanical and electrical problems (engine, transmission, etc) are nightmares that many times the repairing costs are greater than the car's value. Embrace that 915 transaxle, it will make you a better driver. On another note, the great increase in value of these, has turned my 82 SC daily driver, into a semi-daily driver, and made me pull my 67 911S off of the track, and am currently restoring it to a road car, again. It's cheaper and easier to race a Miata, especially when the $6000 car you bought 30 years ago, to go racing with, is now worth over $100,000. Absolutely blown away at the prices of the SWB cars, and all the air-cooled cars, for that matter. You can put all of the horsepower and technology into the new 911's, but it's nothing like driving the pure sports car that Butzi brought to us.

Don't knock odor as a potential indicator of trouble. I test drove a used car that had obviously had its engine cleaned recently (also a warning sign) and during the drive faint odors of coolant and oil were detectable. I declined.

I,ve got a 1986 Cabriolet that I had built for me on my 40th birthday. It’s guards red with a new top and I had the motor rebuilt at 165,000 miles. It’s clutch was replaced at the same time. I have people wanting to buy this car all the time. My sentimental attachment and it’s great condition just keeps me from selling. It's the SMELL! It's true that the smell on air-cooled 911 is AMAZING. Nothing compares to them in the water-cooled world. (by the way what you're smelling is burnt oil that is perfuming the whole inside thanks to the ventilation/heater system - remember it's air cooled so the heating you get comes from pipes that run around the hot engine, hence the smell).

I only wish Porsche's had a lot in common with VW's. They have very little, and are much more finicky than a classic bug could ever be. If you want a bit of advice from a 2 Porsche(1969 912, 2004 911 Carrera) household. Drive the car, a lot. The 911's are some of the most reliable cars in the world. But if you don't drive the car, and maintain the car. It will be the biggest pain in the pocketbook, you could imagine. Guess what people do with them, drive them very little. I'm more and more convinced my 69 912 is very much like a Herbie. If I let her sit for more than week she complains, loudly. If I express a concern in the presence of the car, I would swear the car does it's best to belay those concerns. It may sound very odd, but when talking to my fellow old German car owners. They agree with me(even my mechanic), they have similar experiences.

I am from Germany and I can explain at least partly why the price is so high in the US. Over a decade ago people in the US treated this car just like what it is, an old car with outdated technology. While on the other hand in Germany it is still a mythical car with very high prestige, somewhat of a childhood dream for everyone who was a teenager in the 80s. In the essence there were two markets for these cars. You could buy them low in the US and sell them high in Germany. Add two and two together and you understand why dealers from Germany and especially the Netherlands (for tax reasons) went to the US to buy every 911 they could get their hands on. Eventually the market in the US caught on and the prices went up. I myself tried to get a 911 at a reasonable price for over a year, but finally gave up on the project. All you can buy in Germany is either totally overpriced or very close to an engine rebuild or both. In Europe the good old 911 is the modern version of the dutch tulip. This is especially funny since E-cars are around the corner and one day fuel-driven engines will be outlawed. There is another thing that I noticed during my search: The market is highly efficient. If the car is expensive it may be good or bad, but you will never - NEVER - get a good car cheap. Everyone with a good car knows exactly what it is worth.

OK So I just sorted out a '89 after a year in the garage and I've been driving it for break in. I think once sorted they are so excellent and I just can't believe how engaging the car is. Really like nothing else. The tern go kart is overused, but the rear engine, no weight up front, floor mounted pedals, and no power steering is just like a go kart. You feel the engine in the back and have to adapt your driving to the car, not the car to the driver. Extremely rewarding driving experience and because it's not too fast, you can hit redline in multiple gears and not go to jail. Mine is staying with me.

Americans really are spoiled. If you cannot afford a lightweight sports car like a Porsche. You can easily find a muscle car get it modified and still have an amazing car. In europe none of that is possible. The only really option is Porsche. You have to be a millionaire in Europe to own a V8 car and I am not exaggerating and I mean that literally.

bighands69 Yep totally true. We get absolutely screwed in the UK from every angle. Wages are less, prices are higher, standard of living less, houses are tiny and expensive, petrol costs are unreal.. US get access to V8s that are affordable, classic and plentiful 911s which only the most wealthy can afford in the UK. US spec Audi/BMW/Merc cars are loaded with options as standard that in the UK would cost £5-£7k. UK Govt told us to buy diesels, now have changed their mind so all diesel owners are being punished and forced off the road with emissions tax and new MOT which targets diesel emissions and made up environmental 'green' issues. . Non such bullshit in the US, some states dont even have inspections!

All the work done previous in the UK which actually would have allowed a more free market approach simply were destroyed. The only reason I now visit the UK is see family but sometime down the line that may stop. It saddens me to think of what the UK could have been. My father worked in the UK car industry that got destroyed by government interference. It was Tony Benn who destroyed the UK car industry along with the steel industry. My grandfather had a late 60s 911 that he bought in the UK which was competitively priced back then and he also had an aston DB3 and they were both the most amazing cars I have ever seen. If you are a young person I suggest getting out of the EU or UK. I suspect that the brexit U-turn has already begun.

I am glad you got out of the UK. I should have done the same years ago when New Labour came in, but decided to stay as I had already bought a house. Things have gone downhill massively, especially in the last 10-15 years. Have been hoping for a big turnaround at some point, but I don't think it is going to happen. I am sick of hearing about Brexit, its all I have heard for the last 2 years. It should never have been voted for in the first place and is now used a scapegoat for everything negative that happens, even if it is totally unrelated. Unfortunately I am now middle-aged (user name prob gives it away) being 43, so stuck with it. Would love to move to the States - business wise it seems so much more positive there and find the mindset more inspiring.. Its probably why I watch so much US content on KZbin!

I had a burgundy (Rubinrot) Cabriolet of this year. I had it for 5 years and sold it for almost same price that I had paid for it. This video reallly brought back great memories. I only did the clutch and alternator in the 5 years I owned it. So reliable. The alternator is behind the impellar wheel and I did the job myself. It took 3 days because I had the original alternator rebuilt. You will find on these cars that Porsche would have to switch suppliers of electronics during the production runs occasionally. So parts don't always match the factory workshop manual exactly. Sometimes, it is better to rebuild the original part. I was so impressed with the engineering and build quality and quite satisfied with myself when that engine lit on the first try after I did the alternator. A truly epic driving experience I will never forget.

My uncle brought a USDM model Carrera back to Germany as a fixer upper. Was a barn find, he paid about 10k for and completely restored it. It even has the Porsche Owners club of America sticker on the windshield.

Why?... easy: 2nd gear. That's all you need to say. I bought a badly taken care of Euro-spec (ROW) '85 Carrera Cabriolet, and paid $12,500 in 2000 for it. It needed a lot of work, and the best thing I did was to join the local PCA club. From that association, I seriously got probably about $9K in labor free of charge from good friends in the club. Brake work, paint job, CV boots, engine R&R, installed Turbo flywheel, and others... it was just a terrific connection with the club. I did have to professional rebuild the 915 transmission among other things, but alas, the electrical gremlins got me. The car sat for some years as a "garage queen" while I paid for my sons to play in soccer and other high school athletics then on to college. Ultimately (and sadly), I sold it last year - not running, mind you - for $15,000, and there's not a day since that I don't miss it. The ROW cars in 1985 were "grey market" cars, which means that they had to have their emissions re-engineered between the Porsche factory and being allowed on US roads and highways, yet my "emission plumbing" was evidently ripped out. The most important difference was the difference in compression ratio: 9.5 (I believe) for the USA car and 11.0 for the ROW. THAT was noticeable! My car had 232 hp, which is tame by today's standards, but My Goodness!... 2nd gear was better than sex!! ;) Truly, that's all you need to say about the Carrera generation Porsche. Even in 2nd gear, it could get you into legal trouble right quick, but you just didn't care. When that boxer motor opened up around 4,000 RPM and raced up to over 6,500 RPM, the visceral sound and feel was immense. 2nd gear, my friend.... that's all you need to say about this car! Enjoy!

I totally agree. I bought my 79 911SC about 30 years ago. What sold me on it was cranking through sharps turns in 2nd gear and going 30 to 60+ before shifting to 3rd. I haven't had to do any major engine work on it since I bought it 30 years ago. Just oil changes.

I had a 1970 911T with six carburetors! It was the best 125 hp I ever drove! The feel of an old air-cooled 911 is like driving a Swiss watch. My biggest regret was selling it when it was too expensive to fix. I bought it for $4500 and now it costs like $80,000!

Best part of this video 9:36. A 911 is an upgraded gocart. When i drove Autopia as a kid in Disneyland, i knew what i wanted to drive. A 997.2 is jerky, loud (i hacked it), quick, and i would never drive anything else (unless i lost my job). If you have never driven a 911, you really don't know how phaaaaking fun this sled is.

Love all 911s, but I'll stick to my 996. It cost less than this car and will outperform (speed, handling, mileage, etc.) it in every way. If you want a status symbol and are hung up on how your lights look, pay more; if you want a great sports car AND want a good value, get a 911 (and have the IMS fixed).

The 996 is the 911 from my childhood, the whole reason I fell in love with the 911 line (Sally in Cars the movie helped). You have a gem, the 996, The first water-cooled 911 and to me, the best looking, especially 01-04). I looked at this car for a friend a few months ago, a PPI was done on it also. Change the 'S' oil suction hose between the tank and oil cooler if it wasn't done during the oil change; that hose was beyond dry rotted. It needs plug wires also; the shop that did the PPI had to replace 3 of them when it came because they crumbled when touched. I suspect it has a lot of other dry rotted hoses; pull the intake and replace the gaskets, hoses and vacuum lines...it will probably run much better. It will also let you address the triangle of death. The shop that checked it thought the oil leak was more serious; i cant recall if he said base gasket or the cam carrier. The car also needs a WEVO shifter badly, or just replace all the bushings and have someone that knows the 915 trans adjust it.

The reason why people overpay for the old 911 in the US is quite simple: The market price in Europe is much higher, therefore european car dealers, especially from the Netherlands, are trying to buy the US market empty thereby driving the price up. For some reason the car still has an absolutely unique image, despite the fact that virtually every modern sports car is way faster. It probably has something to do with generations. Kids in the 80s dreamed about this car and now they are old and have enough money to buy it as some sort of toy project. When they finally own one of these precious oil-cooled 911 3.2l oldtimers, they will notice rather fast what a "Ventilschaftdichtung" is and that it costs about 10k to get the engine rebuild. That's usually the point when the dream meets reality and the lovely toy project is up for sale again.

I can't speak for the investor types but as a driver who once built a go kart...these cars are like big go karts. If you build a go kart you put the engine behind you and right next to the rear wheels. Then you hold on for dear life when you steer it. That's how old air cooled Porsches are. Now if you like that driving experience, then you will love it. Also have your mechanic check the shift linkage and adjustment, because that gearbox is great to drive when it's adjusted ad miserable when not. I used to be fifty fifty going into to fifth. Get the right tires on it, adjust the linkage, align it, and you will love it.

It’s my first 911 and I absolutely adore it. I totally get where you’re coming from. My first 15 minutes behind the wheel were embarrassing while I got better at shifting the 915 gearbox. I bonded with the car during the 5 hours it took driving it home from Green Bay WI. These are amazing cars and I can’t wait to get it out on some twisty roads with the top down. Cheers!

These air-cooled 911s are the last of the handbuilt cars with engines that share their heritage and design with those that raced at LeMans over the last 40 years. The engines when properly cared for are going to last easily over 200,000 miles before needing refreshing. Listen to the door closing with the solidity of a vault and admire the workmanship and charm of the leather interior and the communicative unassisted steering wiggle that tells you exactly what the wheels are doing. I've owned 4 of these (1977 911 targa, 1985 Carrera 3.2, 1987 3.2, 1988 3.2) and the purchase price was always returned when I sold them after putting thousands of miles on their odometers.

Hmmm..... Can anyone say "Spoiled child?" I don't think you understand the Porsche. Did I interpret correctly that you think your Porsche is difficult to drive? You certainly seemed to have trouble smoothly shifting. I have never yet found a Porsche that is not incredible to drive compared to anything produced at the same time. I cannot imagine what you would say about my 1968. (50 years old for public school kids.) My Porsche is older and slower, but I have owned it since 1986. (That is 32 years.) I drive it in Colorado, up and down mountain passes. Even through a few snow storms. It is beautifully balanced for driving hard on a track. (You don't need ABS, track mode suspension systems or even launch mode.... yes, I have driven newer cars, but its different.) I have rebuilt my engine once early on. Yes, I still love working on it after those 32 years. I don't have to "pay my mechanic" anything. I love driving it. There is something special about a Porsche. By the way, my history also includes a few adventures with a Pre-A 1955 Porsche Speedster, SN RS80820. (Not mine, but a friends for a few years.) Another old Porsche that was pretty incredible. Look it up. Its now in Stuttgart in the Porsche museum.

I'm a Pro Detailer based in Washington State and I'm also a PCA Detailer ( Porsche Club of America). I travel all over the US as far as NY for Porsche clients. The reason air cooled Porsche's are going up in value and will continue to rise is because those they are the standard of which other sport's car's compare themselves too for handling and pure rawness without all the Nanny restrictions like Traction Control and ect. Air cooled Porsche's are True driver car's and it takes a driver to drive and control them and only then will you know why you paid the money that you paid. If I Concours Detailed your Porsche I would raise the value about a extra $15,000 after I was finished.

Thanks Hoovie! Yeah. Very much like the 911 I had in college (but it blew up on me on the road.) I was tempted to buy another 911 a few years ago, but instead bought a perfect, low mileage RX7 convertible. Yeah yeah I know - the PCA would laugh and turn up their nose at it. Truth is: not only does the rotary engine run like a pup, and it never needs anything; the interior is ALL leather - and THE AC ALWAYS WORKS! I'd also put it up against any Porsche or Corvette of the same era. I put the money I saved (about $30,000) toward my Tesla Model 3 - which is faster than any of these cars. Smile - you're gonna spend a lot more on this Porsche. Get a Porsche qualified mechanic. Your friend means well, but there is no way he is going to know everything he should know.

I owned a 1979 Carrera 3.0 Targa and he is right by describing it as truly engaging an bringing an instant smile to your face. I bought mine 2nd hand in 1986 and it only had 52.000 kilometers on the clock and i payed 32.000 deutsch marks back then and i wan only 20 years old so YES i was a spoiled brat packer! The most fun car i ever had and yes it brought a smile to your face and there was never a dull moment. So much character.
