It's been a few years since Microsoft made a phone, but it seems like they stop fighting and joined Google's Android OS. Do you think the Surface Duo will be enough to make Microsoft a major player against the likes of Samsung and Apple?

Had a windows phone, loved it, but still had to return it immediately. Requiring me to add a credit card to download even free apps was a deal breaker for me, and a few people I knew. I imagine that "feature" probably nerfed the adoption rate a lot more than they realized.

I am you. My Lumia 920 was awesome. I loved the Metro UI and I think live tiles are so far the best balance between iOS's simple icons with little numbers in the corner, and Android's full-blown widgets. And I loved how it integrated your contacts and communications from your email and social media apps into one complete view. It was truly innovative; it just arrived too late.

I actually liked Windows Mobile, I had an LG Optimus 7 that I absolutely adored and I used the HP X3 for 3 years. In which I still use its Laptop dock for both my Samsung Note 20 Ultra and Nvidia Jetson Xavier DEV Board. Anyway, I just got the DUO through my firm, we bough a few for the sales team. So far I'm really enjoying it. It's multitasking capabilities are awesome. The display is beautiful, it's fast, I've already mastered the keyboard and am typing 40 words a minute while using Word. Citrix works flawless so I can have Windows 10 up on one display and KZbin on the other. Also, yes, you can run two things at once.

I’ve got to be honest here - I never tried Windows Phone after Windows Mobile 5, but every single person I’ve ever met who owned a Windows Phone really loved it. I’ve never met anyone who used it as their daily driver who didn’t like that OS. It failed more because Microsoft sucked at marketing it and selling it if you ask me. I kind of wish I’d owned one so I could properly compare, but alas, no. I’ve only owned several Androids and several iPhones and several OLD Windows phones and several OLD Nokias when they still ran Symbian. I completely missed out on the Windows Phone OS phones.

Microsoft really shot themselves in the foot. Multiple times. They keep requiring new hardware each time they updated it which really annoyed a lot of people and by the time they had in place upgrades (only a few got it in any official capacity) dev support had already waned. I had high hopes for Windows Phone. It was something different to iOS and Android (which as we know was made an an iPhone OS clone when it became clear Blackberry wasn't the in thing any more). It just sums up Microsoft so well though. Amazing ideas, a company full of talented brilliant people, but they suck at execution and management have a habit of crippling things that aren't directly related to Windows (on the desktop), Office or Xbox.

The intro is so wrong. People loved Windows Phones, I had one, they were great. It was just Microsoft changing the architecture with every update that made developers not rewrite their apps over and over again. Windows Mobile was great, but then they changed it with Windows Phone 7 which had a good reception, then apps had to be rewritten for 7.5 Mango and I think again for 7.8 Tango, and then definitely for Windows 8, then for Windows 8.1. By the time Windows 10 Mobile came around all the devs were writing Android/iOS apps. Few bothered to write a half-baked app for Windows.

"Is that dumb or am I being dramatic" Dramatic. Multitasking is having 2 apps open and using only one at a time, easily switching app at any moment, like Windows virtual desktops - clearly you have another definition, and I don't see the use of yours for work. What they did makes sense if you use it for work - if you're consuming entertainment maybe you want to use both hands at the same time... But for entertainment it's the wrong device anyways - you'd want one with no separation in the middle to enjoy a full screen movie or game, no ? Also when folded, if I open a task on one screen and double tap the other screen, I *do* want each screen to keep its state independently of the other ! The way you want it, it would be a gimmick, while the way they implemented it is a functionality (while writing an email you go check a document on the other side). The only part that you should complain about is the freezing... Epic fail. The price though... These Surface thingies are all too expensive for me - but then again, they are Apple-expensive because that's what they aim for... I did have a Nokia Windows phone and it was shit, most fragile phone of this era, not a fan boy, but I also don't think the tests performed here are realistic

Yes and no. Your basic definition is correct, but it is not what he (and I) are used to - take window management in Windows 10 for example. It suppports you typing in your keyboard in one window while you scroll with your mouse in another. I used that a lot when running around in a game while scrolling through pages in the browser for example. It's also helpful when coding in one app and scrolling through a tutorial/documentation/StackOverflow/whatever on the other monitor without the IDE losing focus.

Back in the day, my friend had a Nokia Lumia 920 it was kinda expensive so I couldn't get one. It was my dream phone and now that I can easily afford one I can't buy it anymore. Windows as a mobile operating system definitely failed to appeal to a large number of people due to the fewer number of apps it supported compared to its competition but as an OS in general it was really good. it had a niche market but the people who used it and didn't mind the lack of app support really loved being a part of the windows operating system.

I’ll admit, I’m an avid Apple product fan/eco-system adopter. Some years ago, I got my wife a windows phone just to get her out of the flip phone market and couldn’t afford a new iPhone for her. I truly wish we still had a 3rd competitor in the smart phone OS market, Microsoft.
