Enjoyed the vid. Looking to get a 4xe soon so appreciate the perspective you gave. My use will be about the same as yours. On FORM mode my understanding is it’s not about the battery being cold or electrical mode not ready, but rather the vehicle is trying to keep the oil warm and moving. When it’s cold the oil can start to have problems if it’s too cold and not being used. From what I’ve read FORM mode (Fuel and Oil Refresh Mode) is forcing use of the combustion engine in cold weather rather than letting you use electrical mode so it can warm up and circulate the oil and fuel.
@ajarmour
@ajarmour Жыл бұрын
Yeah your absolutely right. I kind of mixed FORM up with the fact that all electric is less likely to be available in the cold weather. Making the case for all electric tougher for a lot of people.

I live in Az and have a stock 2024 Rubicon 4XE. I live 51 miles from work and charge it fully at home and work each day. For the 102 miles a day I drive I average about 56 miles electric and 46 gas miles per trip. Hand calculated MPGs for me have range for a low of 42mpg to a high of 53mpg. I love this thing! Planning on lifting in and getting 35s at a minimum so definitely going to suffer a little in terms of efficiency but the added capability will be worth it

@@robertdelvecchio7438I do keep it charged but with my 51 mile one way commute the I’m getting about a 50/50 split between gas/electric each trip. I have a level 2 charger in my garage and charge the jeep every night and I charge it at work as well which really helps out. On a single tank (15.5 gallons is the most I’ve had to put in from E) of fuel and I’m able to get between 660 and 800 miles of range.

140k miles on a 2013 chevy volt. very similar drive train. its had no real problems since it was made. i put enough miles on it during the last 18 months to offset the price of the car ($6500). 16.5kwh battery (almost the same as the jeep), 45-55 miles of ev range, about double the jeep, mainly coz of drag. the gen1 volts only get about 32-35mpg on the engine coz theyre old low tech engines, iron block, port injected, lower compression, and no CVT style transmission. all these are untrue of the 2nd gen volts which have issues at higher mile numbers. ive averaged around 90mpg when counting the ev miles over the last 18 months and 40k miles. crazy, best setup for a car. has about 200hp equivalent but instant torque. i will never buy a non phev car again.

You can't trust the onboard fuel economy rating - your use case is similar to mine, where you mostly use EV mode daily. The only way to know your MPG is to divide miles driven by gallons added at fill up. I've been getting 60+ mpg regularly unless I'm doing long trips to trails, off roading, etc. I've got a 2024 Rubicon 4xe on 37s and it's a great rig. Great discussion on the modes - one thought on e-save: I like to use it to guarantee the engine will reach operating temperature before shutting off. It's so bad for ICE to turn on, not warm up, then turn off. So if ICE is kicking on, I like to make sure it warms up. Here in Colorado, we are seeing super cold temps, so to make ICE last longer it's important to only hit operating temps if it kicks on.

F.O.R.M. has nothing to do with the battery not being “ready”. It’s “Fuel, oil refresh”…. gas gets stale over time. Just like leaving gas in your lawn mower…. not good. Plus fuel can get in the oil past the piston rings from the direct injection system on cold starts and if the engine does not reach or stay at operating temp long enough it does not evaporate / get burned off by the PCV system. Gas makes a terrible lubricant so the engineer’s smartly designed the system to run the engine to clear gas from the oil and/or force you to refresh the gas tank with new fuel.
@ajarmour
@ajarmour 10 ай бұрын
My confusion with this comes when I have a fresh, or perhaps just a few days old, tank of gas. This must be from oil getting past the piston rings, as you mention?
@vekrede
@vekrede 7 ай бұрын
@@ajarmour stale gas is one way it can go into FORM. That’s the least detrimental one and easiest to solve. Jeep even says, you can add 4 gallons into the tank and that will dillute the stale gas enough to bring it out of FORM. The second way is more problematic and takes longer, and it’s because that gas (not oil) goes past the piston rings and dilutes the oil. To bring this out of FORM, you need to drive 30-120 minutes on an interstate, according to Jeep, to bring it out of FORM. This is the reason why people are getting wildly low and odd “Oil Life” percentages on their 4XE. I do wish Jeep would tell us which FORM we’re in. Because it’s a PHEV and if used in a way the engine doesn’t heat up, the piston rings don’t seal well and you get some un-combusted fuel that makes it way past the piston rings and dilutes the oil. Also because exhaust gas and water naturally build up in the oil, the composition of gas, oil, and water can form an acid that can eat away at soft metals and rubber seals. This is why, for example, if you’re going to send in an oil analysis on your car, all the companies say you need to drive it, and not idle it, to warm it up before you change the oil and grab a sample. Because you won’t get the sufficient amount of load needed to seal the piston rings and your oil sample will be contaminated with fuel. In a typical use case where you drive an ICE vehicle normally and consistently, the building up of the additional gas and water are burned off naturally in the process. It’s also the reason why you should change your oil before you store a vehicle for a long time because you reduce the acid.

The hate and misinformation is real, the 4xE battery and electric powertrain components are warranted for 10 years 100k miles nationwide & 10 years 150k miles in some CARB states so no it’s not a 3 year disposable Jeep, when the battery is out of full electric range it still has great power output over the pentastar and the 2.0l tt on its own. And the fuel economy improvement over other powertrains in city and off road driving is noticeable after a few loops with a friend with his gladiator people don’t realize how much fuel idling actually consumes

Did you have to regear to go 37? curious because I know that if I custom order any gas jeep on the website I can opt for 35s and different gearing. I want this to last at least 10 plus years. I get it has warranty, but if I have to pay 2 grand for batteries in 15 years im ok with that but not 20k or somthing ridiculous like some teslas. These are all things I considered as well. The Xtreme Recon packages with their upgraded gears are certainly a great way to go. I did not regear the 4XE and I haven’t looked in to doing it since I first got the Jeep. Back then you could not re gear yet (on a 4XE). You have a tough choice there! For me I guess it would come down to what am I doing daily? I have virtually no commute and get a lot of value out of the all electric range, and I still love the get up and go I get for the hybrid powertrain. But rhe reliability and out of the box capability of an Extreme recon Wrangler would be tough to pass up. Good luck!

I have a diesel gladiator and would love to get the upcoming 4xe gladiator, but the wrangler 4xe specs keeps my hope is low. I just don’t understand how a this thing ever got out of the planning ohase as its vehicle with 5 seats has a max payload below the average weight of 5 adults. It also seems to be less efficient than ICE (diesel) in terms of both money and CO2. The idea of having a massive battery for camp when hunting is great, but it seems like you give up everything for it: $ efficient CO2 efficient range payload towing Am I missing something? The only other thing I can see is torque; Diesel has ample torque for beaches and park/forest roads.

I think these make the most sense for people who want a jeep but do 75% or more of their driving in cities and short trips under 20 miles. I'm keeping an eye on the 4xe Gladiator. I am curious as to what they do as far as towing. I don't think towing is important to most buying a wrangler so it may not have made sense for them to offer it with a tow package. The 2.0 turbo puts out similar power to the V6 which is how you get the max tow numbers on the Gladiator so I don't think being the smaller motor would prevent it from being capable of towing. If they do what Toyota did with the new hybrid tacomas, they just reduced the tow capacity by the weight of the hybrid system. If Jeep goes the same route you'd have a tow capacity of 7k pounds possibly. Unfortunately the diesel isn't available any longer so comparing its efficiency and CO2 emissions is kinda moot. Diesels are typically worse on particulate emissions. Another consideration though is not having to deal with DEF and the issues those systems can have. Depending on driving style some people are getting 500+ miles out of a tank. I think that's more than enough for 90% of people.

@@RJBiteanerd Fair. Towing big isn’t a huge priority to me. I don’t see towing >5000 in the next 5 or so years. But payload is. Right now the wrangler 4xe can barely fit 4 men. 1200 = 4*200 men + gear + any mods (rack, winch etc). That’s kinda pathetic imo. If gladiator 4xe is less payload than my Diesel that’s an absolute no for anyone that actually uses the backseat and bed. If I wanted I low payload/low utility off road vehicle than yea the 2 door wrangler 4xe makes a ton of sense. For light off road why not the Grand Cherokee 4xe? People see something in the 4 door wrangler 4xe that I am totally missing… My hope is that now that diesel is gone (and possibly gas too) that we will have EC, 4xe, and the generator ram charger power plant. If the generator-EV doesn’t make it to gladiator, I’d probably keep my Diesel and eventually add a 1500, 2500, or wagoneer depending on household needs with the generator power plant. I can’t see how the 4xe beats the generator system in any of range, payload, or towing?
@RJBiteanerd
@RJBiteanerd Ай бұрын
@@christopheryale6867 unfortunately it's probably going to end up 1200ish pounds for payload unless they upgrade the chassis for more payload. There's just no getting around the weight of the hybrid system eating into the payload. I also think the generator set up is even heavier than the 4xe design. If it follows the same design parameters as the ramcharger the battery is going to be quite a bit larger. The 17kwh battery in the Wrangler is already 4-500 pounds and that only gets you 20-25 miles of range. To prevent people being stranded you'd probably need to at least triple that so we're talking a 12-1500 pound battery at minimum. Engine weight wouldn't change much between the turbo vs v6. Having an electric motor would probably be similar in weight to a transmission so I don't see any savings there.

@@RJBiteanerd Thanks makes sense. Coming from sedans I got a Glad 3 years ago. I’m learning now how important it is not to look at the truck but write down the goals and then fill it with a truck. Glad has been awesome and still is. I’m going to stretch it for a year or so to make sure I know exactly what I need. I guess it is fair. I can’t expect a light truck to do 2 out of town, haul, and fill with meat (people+dogs). I realize I need to be in the 150-350/1500-3500 next time around for opening opportunities. But as I’m looking at the EV’s they still aren’t there in terming of truck stuff (rather than using a truck like we use SUV’s). Eg it seems all brands won’t certify their EV trucks for say a camper. They try to market that they are just as good, but they won’t stand by it. My guess is EV/hybrid will have to wait 5-10years until they figure it out. Still lost on the 4xe overall vs a diesel. I can’t see one benefit you can’t do with diesel.

@@christopheryale6867 if the majority of someone's life is within a 20-30 mile radius then it makes perfect sense as it can be run in ev mode the majority of the time and rarely use gas. If they have solar, wind or really cheap electricity rates it can be significantly cheaper than gas or diesel. For the occasional drives beyond that range they'd have better gas mileage than a typical gas only jeep. I think the big break through that will make the 4xe or a ramcharger like set up work is solid state batteries. They'd double battery capacity over current batteries and support faster charging allowing much smaller batteries to be used saving tons of weight. A few companies are gearing up for their large scale production over the next few years and I believe Toyota has even said they're going to be testing them starting next year. They're likely still 5 or so years away from being in a car sold to the public if everything goes well.

I'm not sure the goal should be to keep the battery topped off. The vehicle will always retain enough charge in the battery to function as a hybrid. By driving in E Save all the time, the vehicle will be in its most inefficient mode. You'll see better fuel economy in hybrid mode and charging whenever you can.

I mention that in the video. Who knows what maintenance looks like in several years. Could be insane. Could the costs of batteries foreseeably go down though?What about battery upgrades? Extending range and power. Not too extreme to think about. And I’d say look at any 10 or 12 year old vehicle. A lot of them from a lot of makes don’t do so hot after that long.

I don’t know maybe people that own vehicles for 10-12 years anymore. I’d think most peoples needs change by then. Regarding the Jeep itself I think it’s on par with any other modern day vehicle. They’re relatively disposable unfortunately. They all have they’re unique problems.
