Hey Craig, I fuggin' love this truck! I'm sure I have watched every video you've posted about it. My Dad picked up a 71' about 15 years ago for a project. Did a frame-off build. Bought a 69' Ranger for a rust free cab. Bought a 98' Explorer and used the Engine (302 w/GTP Heads), most of the leather interior, and the 4-links off the rear. Bought a 89' Mustang GT and used the Gauges, Rear End, and the ECM. (He kept it EFI!) Port matched the intake to heads, used a E303 cam, and Headers. Did a 6-different-can of Ford paint mixture to come up with a pretty awesome Blue. He still needed to do a Disc Brake conversion, to have it "Road Worthy". Well here came health issues for him and I moved out of state. The truck sat for 6-7 years, and one of our trips down to visit, I got ahold of a tandem trailer to go pick up the truck. The phone call with my Mom before we headed down revealed she got rid of the truck a week prior....that was 5 years ago. I'm still pissed about it! His passing will be a year ago next month (OCT 8) and I wanted his truck as is. But I would find it hard to build one much different than your setup. So hey man, didn't mean to leave a story on this vid, but you keep posting, and I'll keep watching!

The idea of "over building" something implies that there is a misalignment between the goal and the result of the build. Some folks like the build process, some like the driving, some like the show scene, some focus on racing/competition. The nature of the build should align with the intended use, and it can be a serious bummer if you spend a bunch of time, effort, money, and emotion on building a car one way just to find out it's not good at whatever you chose, or that it's not what you really wanted/needed. But what I infer from this video is that you have maybe changed a bit of what you want from the build since finishing this version. Nothing wrong with that. It may be exactly what you set out to build, even reaching a kind of actualized ideal. But it doesn't have to remain as-is if it can be something (you deem) better.
@cobyfield92373 ай бұрын
you summed it up very well. I'm only a year younger than Craig and yeah.. what you wanted 4-6 years ago most likely will have changed slightly due to more knowledge, experience, priorities, etc. It's why gearheads usually have multiple cars.. but also far too many get in over their heads with expectations sometimes too.

I was pulling out of a dirt road and onto the pavement when I shifted into 2nd and dumped my clutch. That's when the carrier bearing failed and the rear of the truck went upwards. It took me 2 weeks to find another two piece drive shaft. I had also removed a few leafsprings and pulled out my coilsprings to lower it. I put it all back to stock after but I was 19 and not too bright 😂

If you want to quiet the truck down without much power loss, consider adding electric cutouts then two 24" glasspacks for when you don't want to set alarms off. Personally, I'd like to see some NVH and comfort improvements, considering it's already a weapon. MLV with a foam decoupling layer sound deadener. Semi bucket seats with a lapsash is an excellent idea, as you've said. A reverse camera would be a nice addition in this age of small parking spaces and gigantic trucks/SUVs. Exhaust redirection valve to cut over to the biggest mufflers you can fit. GPS headunit to tie in with the camera, but integrated with the original aesthetic. Do you have AC in that rig? Always a winner. I'm not sure what options you have regarding a change in cam profile/lift/duration to improve the idle and whether an organic clutch option exists that works with that box and your driving style.

I just put together a hopefully daily driver out of a 73 f100 4x4 swb. It had a 390 fe that was plenty torquey but was worn out and burned oil. I swapped in a fresh 351w from a 69 mustang. Its a fun truck but I might need to swap out the cam for a more streetable one. It sounds pretty rad at idle and stop lights but doesn't really make power till 2500 and up. Definitely a difference between low end power big block and top end power small block. It does get a wee bit better mpg from 10-12 to 12-14 🤷🏽♂️

Sounds like the exhaust might be one thing to change since you mentioned several times being self-conscious. Accordingly, it would be cool to see before-and-after chassis dyno results comparing the current exhaust to one that goes up, over the rear axle, and exits out the sides. I'd be very interested to see the effect of the additional exhaust path changes of direction. I have a '69 Bronco with a 426 Windsor and the only mufflers I could package (due to the complexity of my rear suspension) were Magnaflows with the inlets and outlets at the same end of the muffler so the exhaust has to go in, make a U-turn, and then come back out. I love the sound but I wonder how much performance I'm sacrificing.
