She Who Became the Sun is actually a lot more alternate history than it is fantasy (though there are some limited fantasy elements, of course). It is definitely more on the epic side than the slice of life side haha. If you've ever watched a C-Drama, esp a historical one with a bit of fantasy fusion, it's very that. I think my (limited) knowledge of C-drama tropes and pacing definitely influenced my love for it

This is why I try not to read the new or hyped books or tend to read them years later, I am doing the 50 and 100 backlist book challenge on The Storygraph and so far I have read nearly backlist books 2021 and before 🎉 I have read a few 2022 releases *cough* The Paris Apartment 👎🏻 *cough* and Alice Austen Was Here was short, cute and interesting 😊

i felt the exact same about the Girls of Paper and Fire series!! - 1st book was a favourite and i haaated the second book. However - i read Girls of Fate and Fury last week and it was a significant improvement on book 2, like drastically better in every way. Definitely redeems the series even if it isn't the most original fantasy/story-arc like the first one

I absolutely loved There's Someone Inside Your House! Loved it! but The Woods Are Always Watching was just not it and I was so sad...I did push myself through the whole thing but really should've been a DNF.
