You summed it up perfectly: iPad OS 18 is no reason to upgrade my M1 iPad Pro. But more than that: It is another hugely disappointing WWDC for iPad users. We get the best hardware, but the software still has significant weaknesses and there is no real improvement in sight.

Any successful company has an innovator and an operations person. Apple had two visionaries, Steve and Jony Ive (Steve being the overall Innovator). Tim Cook was the op’s guy. He’s great at that and that talent has grown Apple to extreme heights. However, it’s all at the expense of innovation. That will eventually catch up with them. Steve wouldn’t have hesitated to cannibalize MacBook sales by making the iPad more like a touchscreen MacBook. He’d blend the best of both and let users decide what they needed most. Tim doesn’t have that vision or guts to do that. Apple desperately needs an innovator to compliment Tim.

Ipad (os) isnt the problem-you are. But in all reality apple sees the ipad as its intended to be. Its not meant to interface and work like a desktop. Its meant to work like a phone but with bigger legs to stretch. Apple (while it took a long time) is finally getting to the point of “what is a computer “ Many ppl who grew up in the desktop era of pc’s/familys had one shared computer-will always see a computer as a windows or mac os machine. Kids today dont see computers but rather just see what their phones can do but just need more power or bigger screens. Ipads are meant to be that. Mac ppl will always be mac ppl. But ipads are truly meant for a different crowd. Meaning to those who feel ipad os is disappointing, in short its not for you. And therefore nothing can ever _fix_ ipads because (according to apple) _nothing is wrong with it_

I figured why not, since it’d just be sitting on a shelf. So far it’s been fairly stable with some non-working stuff, but that’s expected. I look forward to the SharePlay remote feature, since I am the extended family IT person. I’m ambivalent about AI features, but cautiously optimistic if privacy can be maintained. The software additions are nice for the iPad as I already find a lot of use for my M1, so cannot complain and in fact am very happy with Smart Script for journalling, Topographical Info in Maps (for hikes), the calc is useful as I don't need another app for that and tbh Password manager/faceID are a life-saver for convenience and avoiding stress. AI looks useful in specific small tasks so again that's definitely good considering I expected Apple to gate AI to only the top tier devices so a nice surprise. That all said it's mainly all iOS and nothing specific to iPadOS apart from smart script. And it totally ignores extending the productivity of the iPad with more desktop features to help people do more productive work eg multi-tasking in office apps and so on. Which is x10 worse for anyone who got the M4 chip iPads and overpaid. My M1 was a refurb so the price I paid was good but even then I knew the M1 full power would not be put to full use because of Apple attempting to keep macbooks and ipads separate artificially. That was all expectes so overall thought it was quite good new features for ipads as they are features I will use and find beneficial for no added cost.

This is the first update that I haven’t installed as a beta tester and have no motivation to install. We STILL don’t have TRUE live widgets suck as email that we can scroll through without having to go into, such as you can in Android. So much for the rumoured VisionOS type neuomorphic redesign, which would we get the same crappy, flat rubbish that we’ve had for ELEVEN years now…and to think they said that iOS 6 was stale.

I would have upgraded my M1 iPad Pro if the M4 was the only way to take advantage of new features but it looks safe for now. However, I can imagine AI features running slower on older iPads due to the slower Neural Engine (16 TOPS vs 38 TOPS) and this performance difference would become more profound with more intense inferences in the future. Once AI is widely adopted by users in our daily lives, we will feel the lag and would naturally upgrade. Could be much sooner than we think.

that’s a good point, and I agree with you on the speed of things. I am using ChatGPT 4.o daily and am blown away by it. To think that this is just the kids Lego version of it is mind boggling.

Great overview, I did download the new IOS18. It is cool, but not WOWed currently. They did do some cool updates to the photo app. I like those changes. The math in notes is really cool. I am sure glad my kids learned math the old way and did not have this technology. I did notice some glitches in the predictive typing. That seems a little buggy. Overall, I agree with you. IOS18 does make it worth upgrading to the new iPad Pro.

Cant even eject attached storage devices. No progress when transfering files, transfers cancel. Struggle with zip/rar files. Man ipadOS is frustating

As said by someone on another KZbin channel, Apple should now DEFINITELY REMOVE the label "Pro" from the iPad line-up! iPadOS it's ridiculous and NOT pro at all. When (and IF) we'll see a TRUE file system, a TRUE multitasking and virtual memory management, a TRUE support for actual mouses and mouse pointer, a TRUE handling of external peripherals and a TRUE external monitor support, THEN and ONLY them they could stick the "Pro" label back again.

So when it turns into a laptop?
@marcodimario99187 ай бұрын
@@PatrickRambles Honestly, I think the iPad Pro line will disappear entirely in the near future and make way for what should have been done all along but current tech doesn’t allow yet - a MacBook with a touch screen and Apple Pencil support. That’s the product we’re all waiting for (at least the pros in certain fields). Only the ‘regular’ iPad lineup will remain. The current iPad Pro doesn’t make much sense anymore if it’s going to keep being held back by a TOY operating system.

Huge disappointment! Wasted money on this M4 1tb. Could’ve stuck with my 2020 and would’ve still been fine. I’ll be going back to holding on to my devices longer and not get tempted by possibilities. I mean, we still cant even display our phone on the iPad like you can with the Mac. WWDC was a total joke for IPad Pro M4.

I love my ipad pro 11 inch M1. There's no reason for me to replace it.

The AI enhancements could/should make iPad Pro much more viable as a primary work device, especially for creatives and coders. My old M1 iPad Pro has been mostly for gaming & content consumption, it will likely drive many of my projects once AI & the calculator roll out.

Agreed.

@@PatrickRambles also, as a longtime user of an Android phone & an iPad, I'm glad that my tablet will finally have a customizable home screen.

wait so my poor ipad mini will not be able to use that AI math equation update?
@PatrickRambles7 ай бұрын
Yeah it will. It's just the AI stuff that's reserved for M chips.

If we have an M series iPad but older than a 15 Phone, Apple should find a way to piggyback the phone on the IPad to take advantage of the new AI features to come.
@PatrickRambles7 ай бұрын
But how would they make you upgrade to something more expensive?
@Bruceneuman7 ай бұрын
I have the new iPad Air so I will get some benefit of the new features. However, I plan to keep my phone at least another year or two (it is a 14). I suppose if Apple wanted to offer a generous trade-in, I might consider it. While some of the AI features look interesting I can certainly live without most of them. These are early days and I think we are going to see many more advancements coming over the next few years.

The iPad it’s still a too powerful device ,could be a laptop replacement ,but still a giant iPhone

i have the ipad pro 4th gen 9one just before the M1) and I was waiting to see if WWDC would convince me to upgrade to the M4, sadly nope, its still the same I can live without the AI stuff and I will be able to have a calculator on my ipad now woohoo, im still convinced that iPadOS will get a massive redesign to position the iPad as a viable replacement for a desktop/laptop once they fix the software
