As Adam himself once said, "it was the oldest trope in the book -- the straight man and funny man." One of the reasons I can't take a lot of builder channels on KZbin is that they're all trying to be high-energy Adam, and surround themselves with Adams, all SCREAMING whenever something moderately interesting happens. It's fake garbage and needs a stable rock like Jaime to provide the center.

It doesn't take much observation to see that Jamie is a very introverted engineer, and so many of us will misunderstand his deadpan face expressions as lack of enjoyment. The fact that he was even paying close attention to the event means he was enjoying it.

But I wouldn’t have dreamed of ever socialising with them outside of work. I guess it comes down to actually being able to focus on the work. I’ve also had working relationships where we’ve been literally best friends and you end up losing about two working hours every day to idle chit chat about non-work related stuff. No matter who you are, how extroverted or introverted you are....constantly having your space invaded like that with camera crews, production teams, must really take its toll on you mentally. Whether Jamie was actually into the competition or not isn't going to really show since he was not on a team problem solving. The dynamic between the two of you actually helped push both of you to learn and study more of the science of the show. Really you guys are a great role model to having to work with colleagues sometimes you have a hard time getting along with time to time, the best part is both of you have acknowledged the tensions yet give credit and respect to the other. Many others could learn more about this aspect and could have served our society well imo. The beauty of the show was the collaboration with different mindsets to discover more about the sciences, each person contributed a different angle to each case to see if there was a way to have a solution to each theory. Sometimes it’s a good reminder that there can be a work environment that you don’t have to be friends with everyone, and that is okay. Ultimately that is a question that Jamie can answer, but it’s nice to remember everyone has different ways to express themselves.

Mythbusters was such a special show. The concept was great, but it was you and Jaime that really made it entertaining. Two completely different personalities and approaches and yet you both made such entertaining content and did some great tests. Its always stuck with me in my memories, something rare for most content that come and go. Grant (RIP) and the rest of the gang were good too.

I'll never forget Jamie's explanation on that episode of Mythbusters of what happens when two trucks collide traveling at the same speed: "There is some complicated physics going on there." Adam: I'd love to get a reference to the details of the physics involved here when two objects from opposing directions collide. This has vexed me for many years!
@wcs7929 ай бұрын
As I understand it if you draw out a force diagram the inertia of the stationary (usually reinforced, in the case of crash tests) wall is replaced by the momentum of the (significantly less massive) second body, so you get a rough approximation of hitting a much heavier stationary object as long as the two opposing masses are similar.
@PeteOtton7 ай бұрын

@ruukinen4 ай бұрын
If you think about it from the perspective of one of the cars, the end result is slowing down from at speed to 0. The other car is doing the same. They are both only absorbing the force of the impact they themselves deliver to the impact. So a 50mph car hitting another 50mph car, assuming similar cars, is roughly the same as a 50mph car hitting an unmovable object.
@PeteOtton4 ай бұрын
@@ruukinen It's been a long time since physics but I think them both going at 50 mph in a head on collision equals a lot more kinetic energy than you think. It is likely to be more like a 100 mph vehicle hitting a stationary object.
@ruukinen4 ай бұрын
@@PeteOtton But it's not. It would be 100mph hitting the other vehicle at 0, this should end with both moving at 50mph in the direction of the impact. The mass of the objects in question matters. The reason it works the way it works, is that both vehicles should crumple in a similar fashion, absorbing the same amount of energy. In the unmovable objects case, it doesn't absorb any energy, it reflects it back fully, since it's unmovable and undeformable. Think of newtons cradle as an illustration of the physics involved. If you hold the other side of the cradle with your hand, the ball should bounce back nearly an equal amount to what you let it off at, due to real world friction and your hand not being 100% unmovable.

In regards to needing a nap, it is interesting to hear you mention the time of 2pm in the afternoon. For the majority of my life I was never able to take a nap. My brain never seems to shut off until it is completely exhausted and "naps" if I was able to take one just made me groggy, which often they still do. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2017 which explained a lot of other things like increased fatigue and other things as well but in the last few years since then I have "learned" to nap. It's interesting to me that I often get extremely tired and need the nap at around 2pm during a day when i'm busy trying to actually do things. As I think about it, I often remember my Grandfather frequently falling asleep in his lounge chair around the 2-3pm time frame. Being both a farmer and a welder at a powerplant he had a lot of long hard days working so I certainly understand the need for rest. It makes me wonder if we all don't force ourselves to work harder then we should. Me working long hours with not very much quality sleep is what finally caused my body to physically fail resulting in falls that, once I rested, I could pull myself up from, but before that sleep it wasn't going to happen.

With the civil war bullet fusing, you have to remember also that you still have volley fire taking place in the civil war. When you have 2 groups of soldiers, say 20-200 men, all aiming at each other, one side yells fire, both sides fire from the instruction being heard (you are just a few hundred feet apart), it becomes very likely when you have that happening hundred of thousands if not millions of times throughout the war. even if the odds are 1;100,000, thats still enough that it could happen.

I used to take a one hour lunch break. Eat my lunch then sleep for the rest of the hour. It refreshed me for the afternoons work. My work hours were always extended because I compartmentalized tasks where I would set up and run one task and while that was proceeding I would start the next one. That way I maximized my use of time. I always set a task up to run overnight at the end of the day so I could finish it first thing next day. This meant finishing up later than most others. I would also finish the day by planning out my routine for the next day and getting what I needed ready to go in the morning. That short nap was really key to my productivity.

I am also or was a Bay Area filmmaker with experience in film production but also, I am a huge DIY person so thought it was a unique opportunity. I can honestly say that to the day this was probably one of the best experiences I had had on a show set. Jamie and Adam, as well as the other supporting show host like Grant we’re all a pleasure to meet. They’re on air personalities all seem to match who they were in person. Adam’s energy was contagious, and since most film shoots and TV shows are shot between 12 to 16 hours a day, that’s hard to do. Keep up the good work ADAM!

The thing about the "cars crash into each other does not equal car crashing into wall with twice the speed" was not about the speeds not being additive. You guys noticed that two cars had twice the crumple zone and therefore twice the space to absorb the forces, opposed to the car vs the wall, where the whole force had to be absorbed by a single crumple zone.

I’ve also heard people say a head-on collision between two cars is like it’s double the speed. Easiest way to explain it is just looking at the delta v (change in velocity). A car going 50 and hitting another car head-on that is also going 50 still just comes to a complete stop. It goes from 50 to 0 just like if it hit a wall. Now, if it hit a train head-on, and went from 50 to -50, then it’s like hitting a wall going 100.
@JimVanVerth9 ай бұрын
I believe the main difference between two cars hitting each other and one car hitting a wall is that the two cars can (to some extent) bounce away from each other, whereas the wall won't move. The full momentum transfer from the collision is reflected back at the car, damaging it more than if it would have hit another car. I think that's how it works, been a while.
