Matthew 2:13-15 (ESV): 13 Now when [the wise men] had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

His brothers were not at the crucifixion. They did not believe who he was. He did not want his mother to be alone. He asked John to take care of her. Jesus' brothers did not accept who he was until he rose from the dead. It does matter if they were step brothers or half brothers . I still believe Mary had more children or the scripture would just say Mary gave birth to her son Jesus.

Some do feel that Jesus’ brothers were actually sons of Joseph by an earlier marriage. However, the Bible shows that Jesus inherited the legal right to the kingship promised to David. (2Samuel 7:12,13; Luke 1:32) If Joseph had been father to sons older than Jesus, the eldest of these would have been Joseph’s legal heir!

@@johnvitelli3862 read the verse you quoted,bit strikes me that you don't understand it; He WILL reign until all his enemies are under his feet, not "he will not reign [...]" The meaning of thi verse that you isolate from the context you didn't read, is: after that incredible moment, [the end times and resurrection], Jesus will dethrone every rulership, power, and authority on earth to take full control of the world as His own kingdom, which He will immediately hand over to the Father. Now Paul emphasizes that Jesus will not hand it over to the Father until He has "put all of his enemies under his feet" or defeated them absolutely and irrevocably. Until that moment, Christ Himself will reign. The separate roles of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the Trinity are difficult to comprehend. Matthew 1:25 states Joseph “had no intercourse with her UNTIL she gave birth to a son.” The word “until” in this verse indicates that after Jesus’ birth, Joseph and Mary had normal sexual relations as husband and wife! What scripture says they had a sexless marriage or they never wanted children of their own? In ancient times, families were large and if a woman didn’t have children for her husband it was a shameful thing. (Ex: Sarah, Hannah, Rachel) Matthew 13:55,56 James: The half-brother of Jesus is mentioned at Acts 12:17 and Galatians 1:19; He wrote the Bible book by that name.-James 1:1 Judas or Jude: Another half-brother of Jesus who wrote the Bible book by that name. -Jude 1

Jacob, the brother of the Lord, is Jacob the son of Helfi, and at the same time the cousin of Christ, according to the flesh, the son of Mary, the wife of Kloba (Kloba, another pronunciation of Halfi). The aunt's children were considered brothers due to the severity of their kinship, according to the Jews' customs in speaking of this kinship. An example of this topic is what was said about Jacob's kinship with his uncle Laban, as the book says: "When Jacob saw Rachel, his maternal uncle's daughter, and Laban's sheep, Jacob came forward and rolled the stone, and he watered his uncle's sheep, and he accepted. Jacob Rachel raised his voice and cried, and Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was the son of Rebekah" (Genesis 29:10-12).
@m.i.c.h.a.e.l.1 Жыл бұрын
We see that although Laban was Jacob's uncle, he was considered his brother. This same situation was used by Laban with Jacob when he asked him to be paid for herding his sheep. He said to him: “Because you are my brother, do you serve me for free? Tell me what is your reward?” (Genesis 15:29). The same situation occurred in expressing the kinship between Abraham and Lot. Abram was Lot's uncle. Therefore, the book said about the history of Abram and Haran (Lot’s father): “And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son” (Genesis 11:31). However, when Lot was taken captive from Sodom in the war at Kedorlaomer, the book said: “And they took Lot, Abram’s nephew, and his possessions, and departed... And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he dragged his trained servants with him” (Genesis 14:12-14). According to this ancient custom, Christ’s cousins, the children of Mary, Clopas’ wife, were called his brothers. As for this Mary, she is the one mentioned in the Gospel of John: “And standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene” (John 19:25) (Read another article on this topic here on the St-Takla website in the Questions section and articles). It was said about this Mary in the Gospel of Mark: “And there were also women looking from afar, and among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger, and Joses, and Salome” (Mark 15:40). These Jacob, Joses, and Salome, the sons of Mary, the wife of Clopas, are the ones mentioned in the Jews’ saying about Christ in the Gospel of Matthew: “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers Jacob, Joseph, and Judas?” (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3). As for the Virgin Mary, she gave birth to none other than Christ, and she lived as a virgin all her life, and the “brothers of Christ” are not her children, but rather her sister’s children. James the Younger (son of Alphaeus) was called the Younger, to distinguish him from James the Great (son of Zebedee), the brother of John the beloved.

Interesting balanced approach; it doesn't settle the debate, but gives some fresh introspection. Just one note; at the Wedding of Cana in Galilee the term "adelphoi" means both brothers & sisters. I have two questions Pastor Doug: Where were Joseph's children when they travelled down to Bethlehem and Is it possible that Joseph was a polygamous by having taken his deceased brother's wife to "raise up seed" for him, as mentioned when Jesus debated the Saduccees?

Time 7:45 in the video in reference to 'the inspired book'; some years ago I started to read an inspired book and when I came to the point where it was claimed that Lucifer is god, I put the book away. I think that it would be very good idea just to stay with the Bible, and if an argument cannot be made based just on the biblical evidence, then do not make it. Furthermore, to my knowledge there is no mention in the Bible that Joseph was a widower or had any children prior to marrying Mary, the mother of Jesus. By any chance did you hear about 'the inspired book of mormon', I wonder if indeed Lucifer should be considered as the brother of Jesus?

To answer your question why John was given the responsibility to take care of Mary, the mother of Jesus: Joseph, the husband of Mary was dead, therefore, customarily the responsibility to take care of Mary fall on the oldest son and Jesus was the oldest one. Therefore, before dying Jesus passed the responsibility to John because he knew that John probably would take better care of Mary than the next oldest son in line out of His siblings would do. Joseph could have died in a time frame after Jesus was 12 years old and before He started His mission when He was about 30 years old, and within the 18 years time span Joseph and Mary had more children which the Bible is pointing to.

@@mirr1427 Thank you for your response. I realized the pastor in this video was stating Jesus was not the oldest out of his siblings but he was referring to a book written by some author, not the Bible therefore it wasnt biblical. It was my mistake thinking he was referencing the bible. Idk why pastors do this instead of just using the bible. As far as giving the responsibility to John do you think it may have been because Jesus' brothers were not believers yet at that time?

*About your first argument of Matthew 1: 25* _(Tim Staple's insight)_ Scripture’s statement that Joseph “knew (Mary) not until she brought forth her firstborn” would not necessarily mean they did “know” each other after she brought forth Jesus. *Until* is often used in Scripture as part of an idiomatic expression similar to our own usage in English. I may say to you, “Until we meet again, God bless you.” Does that necessarily mean after we meet again, God curse you? No. *A phrase like this is used to emphasize what is being described before the until is fulfilled. It is not intended to say anything about the future beyond that point.* Here are some biblical examples: *2 Samuel 6: 23:* _"And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to (until) the day of her death."_ (Does this mean she had children after she died?) *1 Timothy 4: 13:* _"Until I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching."_ (Does this mean Timothy should stop teaching after Paul comes?) *1 Corinthians 15: 25:* _"For he (Christ) must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet."_ (Does this mean Christ’s reign will end? By no means: Luke 1: 33 says, “he will reign over the house of Jacob forever and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”) Thus I would say, Matthew 1: 25 cannot - by itself - be used to prove that Mary had other children, and the conclusion you try to push onto this verse (1:13) is simply incorrect: This verse simply *does not say* "Joseph and Mary had normal marriage relationship _after_ that"... those words aren't there, and this is a meaning you try to push over the passage. You ought to be careful about that. As for the rest, there were indeed no words for "cousins" in Aramaic, and since the gospels were originally written in Aramaic, it is natural to assume that any following translations only attempted to be faithful to every words.

No, it doesn't say Joseph and Mary had "normal marriage relationship after that". The "until" is similar to, "until the time of death, he never regained consciousness." It does not imply that he regained consciousness after death. What the gospel does report is that Mary told the angel "I do not know man". She did not say, "I have not known man until now."

@@01superfreddy Perhaps It could legitimately also be argued that the genealogy stops where it does simply because having proven the lineage of Joseph and his position with Mary, there was no scriptural need to take it further. The Gospel is about Jesus . An argument from silence is a very weak place from which to establish any position, and certainly core doctrine. Thankfully as Doug rightly says, this is not a salvation issue, except for the ancient churches of East and West.

In the time Jesus lived, there was a man whose job was to record genealogy of the church leaders. These ancient documents remain. Possibly at the Vatican. The Greek word used in the original scripture read as close relatives, not blood brothers. Two of the brothers/ close relatives listed to Jesus did not have a father named Joesph. Their dad was listed as Joesphs brother. Making these brothers cousins.

Mark 6:3 Does not mention Joseph by name the reason being that it was a slander or slur on Jesus and Mary. As all the people in his region would of known about Mary conceiving Jesus through some other means, that is why Joseph is described as "the carpenter", instead of his Father. Do you believe that it was 4.3 Billion years since the Flood? Our year system shows that it has been 2,000 years since Christ's birth. This means that it was 4.1 Billion years between the Flood and Christ's birth. This means the Flood happened in 4.1 Billion B.C. Henry asked Pastor Doug the question of how old the Earth is, and Doug Bachelor would have given him an answer that is consistent with the Bible and Adventist beliefs. Pastor Doug’s arguments primarily hinge on a misreading of several key passages, as well as conjecture about family dynamics in the time of Jesus. Let's address these points, using **Brant Pitre**'s work and other scholarly Catholic perspectives, to refute the claims made about Mary’s perpetual virginity and the identity of Jesus’ so-called "brothers." 1. The Perpetual Virginity of Mary The claim that Mary did not remain a virgin after Jesus' birth is contradicted by the longstanding belief of the Church, supported by both Sacred Tradition and biblical interpretation. Brant Pitre, in his book *"Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary"*, thoroughly examines the notion of Mary's perpetual virginity, demonstrating how this belief is rooted in both Scripture and early Christian thought. - Matthew 1:25 ("knew her not until"): The phrase “until” does not necessarily imply a change after the stated period. In biblical language, “until” can be used to emphasize the state before a certain event, without implying that the state changes afterward. For example, in 2 Samuel 6:23, it is said that Michal, the daughter of Saul, “had no children until the day of her death,” yet it is clear that she didn’t bear children after death either. The Church Fathers, such as St. Jerome, argue that this passage affirms that Joseph did not have marital relations with Mary, ever. 2. The Use of the Term 'Brothers' The argument that Jesus had literal brothers and sisters relies heavily on the Greek word "adelphoi," translated as "brothers." However, in both Greek and Hebrew, this word can refer to not only biological brothers but also extended family members like cousins or even close family friends. - Hebrew Usage of ‘Brother’ (Adelphos): In Jewish culture, extended family relationships were often referred to as “brothers” and “sisters.” Brant Pitre notes that ancient Jewish society did not have specific terms for “cousins.” This is why figures like Abraham and Lot (who were uncle and nephew) are referred to as “brothers” in Genesis 13:8. Thus, the references to James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas as Jesus' brothers could easily be referring to cousins or other relatives. 3. Joseph’s Alleged Previous Marriage Pastor Doug claims that Joseph had been married before and had children from that previous marriage. However, this idea is pure speculation and has no support from Scripture. It stems from an apocryphal source, the **Protoevangelium of James**, which, though significant for early Christian traditions, is not regarded as part of the canonical Gospels. While it mentions Joseph as a widower, the Catholic Church does not endorse this as a proven fact but rather as a theological possibility. Even so, the Church maintains Mary’s perpetual virginity and thus does not consider Jesus to have biological siblings. - Patristic Support for Mary’s Perpetual Virginity: From the earliest centuries, Church Fathers like **St. Jerome** and **St. Augustine** defended Mary’s perpetual virginity against heretical views. St. Jerome, in his work *"Against Helvidius"*, directly refutes the claim that Mary had other children after Jesus, arguing from Scripture and tradition that the “brothers” mentioned are likely cousins or close relatives. 4. John 19:26-27: The Entrusting of Mary to John One of the strongest biblical arguments for Mary's perpetual virginity comes from the crucifixion scene in John 19:26-27. If Mary had other biological sons, it would have been customary for Jesus to entrust her care to them, not to John, who was not a relative. Brant Pitre highlights that this act indicates Mary had no other children, and Jesus, as her only Son, ensured her care by entrusting her to His beloved disciple. The fact that none of Jesus' so-called “brothers” were present at this crucial moment underscores that these "brothers" were not biological siblings, but likely extended relatives or close family friends. 5. Jesus’ Brothers Did Not Believe in Him Pastor Doug points out that Jesus' "brothers" did not believe in Him initially (John 7:5). However, this again doesn't mean that these were biological brothers. It is possible that these "brothers" were cousins or other close kin who did not understand His mission at first. Brant Pitre emphasizes that this interpretation aligns with the cultural understanding of familial terms in the time of Jesus. 6. Typology and the Role of the Youngest Pastor Doug asserts that Jesus, like many Old Testament figures, was a younger sibling because many types of Christ (e.g., Abel, David) were the youngest. However, this typological argument is speculative and cannot serve as conclusive evidence about Jesus' familial status. Typology is an interpretative tool but must be grounded in clear scriptural and doctrinal foundations. Jesus being referred to as the “firstborn” in Luke 2:7 refers to His legal status under Jewish law, not necessarily implying the existence of other siblings. The perpetual virginity of Mary is a doctrine that has been affirmed by the Church since the earliest centuries, as seen in the writings of Church Fathers like **St. Athanasius, St. Augustine**, and St. Jerome. Pastor Doug’s arguments lack historical and scriptural support when examined closely. Brant Pitre, along with many others, upholds that the so-called "brothers" of Jesus were likely His cousins or close relatives, not biological siblings. Thus, the perpetual virginity of Mary is a well-founded belief based on Scripture, Tradition, and the consistent teachings of the Church, contrary to Pastor Doug’s claims.

According to the time of Jesus, the Christian from beginning always believed that Jesus was the only son of Mary. Many Scholars, Historians from 1 - 3 rd century also left many documents to prove that the Blessed Virgin Mary has only one son and that is Jesus. The Gospel of Mathew mentioned that there was different Mary. One of them is Mary, the mother of James. This Mary is not the Blessed Virgin, mother of Jesus. Before death, our Lord also asked Apostle John to look after his mother. Why? Because Mary has only Jesus. If the Blessed Virgin has other children (as mentioned by D.B) then Jesus doesn't need to ask apostle John to look after his mother.

Yes Jesus had a family, brothers & sisters. We may see him as divine but he was also a normal person for that time. There is actually nothing wrong with that of course, if anything it helps people relate better to know he was also very much like us. 😊 There are plenty of ommitted chapters to his life done by the church who wanted to deify him in those days. These have been lost to time. Some people do not see him as divine, others do. But whether or not they do or not isn't actually important, it's what he taught that's important & what matters most to actual normal people. It isn't Fear, Faith or Obedience or Spirit that's important. It's Love & Compassion alone that makes us who we are. It's what frees us & builds futures. This is what makes People stronger & better in the long run. It's what connects people & bridges the gaps between cultures & races. It's universal as well. That is the Greatest Truth of all & one God hopes you finally understand one day. Remember this is your life & spiritual journey. What you understand & accept should never be forced on you & no one has a right to persecute or judge, using only fear to force you to follow, that's directly contradictory to what Jesus taught & stood for. There are examples throughout the Bible of mentions of half siblings. The word cousin was used 55 times in the Bible. If Joseph had children from a prior marriage, where were the children during their travels to Bethlehem when Jesus was born? The brothers of Jesus tried several times to tell him what to do? Laughable. The verse that he used was said to Jesus because the Jews were looking to kill Jesus and his brothers noted maybe he needed to flee to a different city. No, Jesus is NOT a type of younger children. Many of us are brothers and sisters of Christ. I also have 2 brothers and 1 sister. ALL of the following scriptures refer to BIOLOGICAL siblings. It is unlikely that God would have given Mary a husband who was not a virgin, and strong believer in the Laws of Moses. If Joseph had other children prior to Jesus being both, why did they not travel to Bethlehem for the Census as did Mary and Joseph? If they did, they also traveled with Mary and Joseph to the Temple in Jerusalem on the 8th day after Jesus was born? Luke 2:21-24 (NASB) [21] And when eight days were completed so that it was time for His circumcision, He was also named Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. [22] And when the days for their purification according to the Law of Moses were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord [23] (as it is written in the Law of the Lord: “Every firstborn male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), [24] and to offer a sacrifice according to what has been stated in the Law of the Lord: “A pair of turtledoves or two young doves.” After Mary and Joseph return to their home, the Wise Men from the East finally arrived. No, they did not show up at the stable when Jesus was born. It was in fact much later. Matthew 2:9-12 NASB [9] After hearing the king, they went on their way; and behold, the star, which they had seen in the east, went on ahead of them until it came to a stop over the place where the Child was to be found. [10] When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. [11] And after they came into the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary; and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. [12] And after being warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. There are 55 verses in the Bible that include the word cousin. Yes, there are times when brothers or sisters are used where they are clearly not related, e.g., “We are all brothers and sisters in Christ.” Matthew 1:24-25 (NASB) And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, [25] but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he named Him Jesus. Matthew 12:46 (NASB) While He was still speaking to the crowds, behold, His mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. Matthew 13:55 (NASB) Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is His mother not called Mary, and His brothers, James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Mark 3:31 (NASB) Then His mother and His brothers came, and while standing outside they sent word to Him, calling for Him. Mark 6:3 (NASB) Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are His sisters not here with us?” And they took offense at Him. John 2:12 (NASB) After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother, and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days. John 7:3,5,10 (NASB) [3] So His brothers said to Him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. [5] For not even His brothers believed in Him. [10] But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as though in secret. Luke 8:19 (NASB) Now His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd. Acts 1:14 (NASB) All these were continually devoting themselves with one mind to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. 1 Corinthians 9:5 (NASB) Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? Galatians 1:19 (NASB) But I did not see another one of the apostles except James, the Lord’s brother.

Thank you for explaining how Jesus could be tempted in all ways by having brothers and sisters and that some were half-siblings. If he was the only child he wouldn't have known what it was like to grow up with family members and how there's struggles within families. From studying he needed to be tempted in all things so he could die for everyone.

@@01superfreddy well not exactly. Notice all the other people didn’t mention other children. But I️ have no doubt they had other children. This was more meant to show how much effort God put into ensuring Jesus would be born and raised by Mary and Joseph. It was centered around the birth of Jesus. So it doesn’t need to show siblings. He and Mary could have very well had other children, it just didn’t need to be mentions.

This was really interesting, all points well taken. There is a discrepancy though. If all Jesus's siblings were half blood and from a previous marriage, Joseph being left a widower, how is it that he went for a census to bethlehem with only part of his family? I know some believe that Joseph had two wives alive together but this idea falls too when Joseph makes a trip to Bethlehem without the rest of his family. If Jesus is indeed the elder of all his siblings does he not have the authority to give one of his 'beloved' disciples the responsibility to care for his mother, especially if the other siblings were not converted as yet? That's my only issue with the points given, but as Pastor Batchelor said, this is not an issue that will affect your salvation if you believe Mary had other children or not. We know for a fact though that she did not remain a virgin.

We have early church fathers writings in the second century saying these are not blood brothers of Jesus. Rather Joseph's brother is Clophus sons and his wife Mary ("other Mary", "Mary wife of Clophus" from the gospels). Papias of Heiropolis, taught by Jesus own apostle John wrote this. And Hegesippus from Judas brother of the lord’s great grandson Judah, the last bishop of Jerusalem also wrote this. The early bishop/ historian Eusebius of Caesarea of the 3rd and 4th century cites this among his findings as he writes the same. How could someone born in 1,900’s know more than them?

Sorry Doug, you need to look at the ACTUAL MEANING of Scripture, rather than what you now THINK it means, many centuries later. First, we must understand that the term brother has a wide semantic range in Scripture. It can mean a uterine brother, an extended relative, or even a spiritual brother. In Genesis 13:8 and 14:12, we read of one example of brother being used to describe an extended relationship: Abraham and Lot. Though they were actually uncle and nephew, they called one another “brother.” Moreover, in the New Testament, Jesus told us to call one another “brothers” in Matthew 23:8. The passage obviously does not mean to suggest that all Christians have the same physical mother. Second, if we examine more closely the example of James, one of these four “brothers of the Lord” mentioned in Matthew 13:55, we discover him to be a cousin or some other relative of Jesus rather than a uterine brother. For example, Galatians 1:18-19 informs us: “Then after three years I [Paul] went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother.” Notice, the “James” of whom Paul was speaking was both a “brother of the Lord” and an “apostle.” There are two apostles named James among the 12. The first James is revealed to be a “son of Zebedee.” He most likely would not be the “James” referred to because according to Acts 12:1-2 he was martyred very early on. Even if it was him, his father was named Zebedee, not Joseph. Paul more likely is referring to the second James who was an apostle, according to Luke 6:15-16. This James is revealed to have a father named Alphaeus, not Joseph. Thus, James the apostle and Jesus were not uterine brothers. Easy enough. Some will argue, however, that this “James” was not an apostle or that he was not one of the original 12. Though this is a possibility-others in the New Testament, such as Barnabas in Acts 14, are referred to as “apostles” in a looser sense-the argument from Scripture is weak. When Paul wrote about going “up to Jerusalem” to see Peter, he was writing about an event that occurred many years earlier, shortly after he had converted. He was basically going up to the apostles to receive approval lest he “should be running or had run in vain.” It would be more likely he would have here been speaking about “apostles” (proper), or “the twelve.” The Church has always understood these passages as not referring to other children of the Virgin Mary. In fact James and Joseph, “brothers of Jesus,” are the sons of another Mary, a disciple of Christ, whom St. Matthew significantly calls “the other Mary.” They are close relations of Jesus, according to an Old Testament expression. (CCC 500) The Catechism here refers to the fact that 14 chapters after we find the “brothers” of the Lord listed as “James, Joseph, Simon and Judas,” we find “James and Joseph” mentioned again, but this time their mother is revealed as being named Mary, but not Mary, the Mother of Jesus. We can conclude that “James and Joseph” are “brothers” of Jesus, but they are not uterine brothers. But what about Matthew 1:24-25, and the claim Jesus was Mary’s “firstborn son” and that Joseph “knew her not until” Christ was born? Does Matthew here teach that Mary had other children? Exodus 13:1-2 reveals something very important about the firstborn in Israel: “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Consecrate to me all the firstborn; whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and beast, is mine.’” The “firstborn” were not given the title because there was a “second-born.” They were called “firstborn” at birth. Jesus being “firstborn” does not require that more siblings be born after him.
@BornAgainRN7 ай бұрын
Just because Jesus brothers dishonored him, this does not prove they were not younger half siblings. In the old testament, David rebuked back at his older brothers when he wanted to fight Goliath, even though he was younger than them, and David was not king yet. Jesus not entrusting Mary to his younger siblings does that prove they did not exist. They were unbelievers, and Jesus during his ministry makes a distinction between his brothers who don’t do the will of God versus his disciples who do do the will of God who Jesus stated “Behold My mother and my brothers.” When Jesus told John “Behold your mother,” John would’ve understood what Jesus meant based on him saying this earlier in his ministry (Mark 3:34-35). Plus, John was a faithful male cousin of Jesus in addition to his faithful disciple who is doing the will of God. There was nothing in the old testament law that commands the next eldest biological brother to care for his mother if the father and the eldest son have died. Therefore, Jesus had the freedom to entrust his earthly mother to whoever he wished, which John was his true family, which he pointed out during his ministry. There is another typology in the old testament of Jesus, which is Joseph who had several half siblings, most of them being brothers who dishonored him, but also leader believed in him, just like Jesus brothers. In the second & third centuries, there were three early church fathers who believed Jesus brothers were younger have siblings: Hegesippus, Clement of Alexandria, and Victorinus of Pattau. The last two were canonized a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. The older stepbrother theory is not found in any orthodox writings until at least the mid to late fourth century, and even then it’s limited to four people. The first writing that claims these brothers of Jesus were sons of Joseph from a previous marriage is based on a false gospel likely written by a Docetist who claimed Jesus was not born. This poses a problem in Luke 2 when Jesus is brought to the Temple to be cleansed, which according to Levitical Law was for the first BORN out of the womb to be ritualistically cleansed. There is nothing in the New Testament that even insinuates that these brothers of Jesus could not be younger half siblings. I made a couple videos about this on my KZbin channel that demonstrates all this.

Jesus’ brothers are mentioned in several Bible verses. Matthew 12:46, Luke 8:19, and Mark 3:31 say that Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him. The Bible tells us that Jesus had four brothers: James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas (Matthew 13:55). The Bible also tells us that Jesus had sisters, but they are not named or numbered (Matthew 13:56). In John 7:1-10, His brothers go on to the festival while Jesus stays behind. In Acts 1:14, His brothers and mother are described as praying with the disciples. Galatians 1:19 mentions that James was Jesus’ brother. The most natural conclusion of these passages is to interpret that Jesus had actual blood half-siblings

@@JJ-cw3nf Mark 6:3 records people becoming angry with Jesus when He taught in His hometown. They rejected Him as a prophet and responded, “‘Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?’ And they took offense at him.” This passage indicates that Mary had at least seven children, including Jesus. There were at least thirty years between the time of Jesus’ birth and this encounter, which allows plenty of time for other children to have joined the family as Jesus’ siblings.
@kathleenwhite22363 жыл бұрын
@@JJ-cw3nf John 2:12 gives us another hint as we answer the question of whether Mary had other children: “After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples.” The fact that the words brothers and disciples are both used means that John was not referring to “spiritual” brothers but to familial relationships. The “brothers” and the “disciples” were different groups. Matthew 12:46 records a time when Jesus’ mother and brothers came to speak with Him. Mother and brothers, used as a phrase, implies a familial relationship. Scripture gives us no reason to think these were not the biological children of Mary.
@kathleenwhite22363 жыл бұрын
@@JJ-cw3nf Efforts to prove that Mary remained a perpetual virgin are not based on Scripture but on a misguided allegiance to a woman who was as fallible as any other human being (Romans 3:23). While Mary was chosen by God for the holiest of tasks, she was, in her own words, “a humble servant” (Luke 1:48). She obeyed the Lord with faithfulness, as did many other humble servants of the Lord such as Moses, Gideon, Elijah, and Hannah. For Mary to have had marital relations with her lawfully wedded husband, Joseph, would in no way have “defiled” her. Those normal relations would have likely produced other offspring who would have grown up with Jesus as their big brother (James 1:1; Jude 1:1-2). Mary is given no special place in Scripture, and any effort to exalt her to godlike status is man-made heresy. So, the answer to whether Mary had other children is “yes.” How many children she had is unknown, but she probably had at least seven, including Jesus.

Wonder why Joseph took Mary across the desert if there was 'family back home' and Jesus Aunt. Also, how many children could Mary have had in the twelve years to the time they looked for Jesus when he was teaching in the temple. It always amazed me how Mary and Joseph could have been so distracted to miss Jesus being with them. Maybe by that time Mary had other little ones plus family to tend to? Things must have seemed pretty normal life. Wonder if Jesus had any best friends growing up & what they did, climb trees, go fishing etc. :)

I doubt there were other children before Jesus. The genealogy of Joseph never mentioned Joseph having children. Mary, obviously a virgin had none prior to Jesus. If her and Joseph had other children it was after Jesus. I don’t know where these ideas of Joseph having children from a previous marriage come from. We have to relate to the word for guidance and the Holy Spirit. Not all teachers know everything. It’s good to always seek the truth, you will find it. ❤

Big problem Doug, James you are speaking about was always with Jesus throughout his entire ministry along with the other James son of Zebedee. There were 2 men named james. Both are always listed among the 12. Now the James you mentioned does have a father but it wasn't Joseph, it was Alphaeus aka Clopas. Yes the husband of the other Mary. James was his cousin.
@drewbydoo48282 ай бұрын
1:15 Nothing about that says they had intercourse or had children together! You dismissed the "firstborn" argument correctly and then seemingly concluded that it meant they consummated the marriage. I understand having a bias but surely there are much better approaches to the theory.

It's clear to everyone that Jesus had brothers and sisters. Well except for Catholics that is. But we know what their narrative is. That bible uses certain names for family. Among those is father, mother, brother sister and cousin. So where scriptures says father, it means just that. Where it says brother or sister, it means just that, brother or sister. Why doesn't the catholic church claim that Elizabeth is Mary's sister? It says they were cousins. In this case it's irrelevant to say they were sisters. However, It is convenient for the church to say that the "brothers" of Jesus were his cousins or some other relation. The catholic church loves to cram that square peg in the round hole. Sadly for Catholics, scripture not only says Jesus had brothers and sisters, but she wasn't a perpetual virgin. Not only that but scripture says that Mary offered a sin sacrifice for herself. Why? Because of her beliefs, Jewish tradition and the Law of the Lord. According to those writings and beliefs a Jewish woman whose womb was opened by a male (Jesus), was considered unclean. But as usual the catholic church tries to change what Mary believed and lived, the biblical account, and truth for their own truth.

Do Virgin Mary Had Any Other Children? PEOPLE DO THINK THAT BECAUSE THE PASSAGE BELOW QUESTIONED CHRIST RELATIVES, THEREFORE HE HAD BLOOD BRETHREN, NO!: Matt 13:55 ...*..Is His mother not Mary?, And are not his brethren JAMES AND JOSEPH and Simon Judas* the word brethren includes kinsmen, relatives,ETC. You WILL see James, Joseph, Simon, and Jude, were Jesus' cousin, brethren/Relatives The Bible uses the phrase ---'A SON'-- or --'CHILD'--and not children or sons confirm this Neither will the Bible or prophesies be lie, thus: Matt. 1:22 This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: Matt. 1:23 .*.Look! The virgin will conceive and bear A SON, and they will call him Emmanuel Matt. 1:21 She will give birth to A SON and you will name him JESUS, because HE will save his people from their sins. SO James, Joseph, Simon, and Jude. Are they really Jesus BLOOD BROTHER? no! in Hebrew were the English version of the bible was translated from, there is no such word as * my blood brethren*, rather as the Igbo Language has no such, rather they call same blood, relative, even their tribal ones *My Brother* (Nwa Nne m meaning *my mother's Child/brother*) even when they had only Tribal relationship only, Christian also call their fellow Christians Sister or Brother(in the Lord=specified) because the share the same faith. else one may think they are of same blood! The Bible Proves it otherwise .*. Prophecy of scripture is not a matter of one's personal interpretation 2 Pt. 1:20, Note THE BIBLE WARNS: Scripture can be difficult to understand and can be distorted to one's destruction ... .*. 2 Pt. 3:15-18. Let analyze the passages misunderstood by many, (that Virgin Mary was Virgin up to the birth of Christ, that after then she lost her Virginity and gave birth to other sons or if she remained EVER VIRGIN in Matt. 28:1 ..*Mary Mag'dalene and other Mary went to see the tomb* before this Jesus had died and His mother is already with Disciples, Matt. 28:7 ..*..then go and tell His Disciple that He has risen from the dead * he said this because the Disciple and Mary where at home, that's why the bible use the word *the OTHER MARY* this includes: *(Cloepas' wife). and Mother Of The Sons Of Zebedee, Mary The Mother Of James And Joseph When the Bible wants to mention Virgin Mary, it specifies Her as in Luke 2:48...*and His mother said to him, son, why have you treated us so? your Father And I* you see that they had no other child yet even at 12 years, SEE HOW the BIBLE DISTINGUISHES 3 OTHER MARY FROM VIRGIN MARY Mark 15:40; Matthew 27:56, : ...*Among them at the cross were MARY Magdalene and MARY the MOTHER of JAMES and JOSEPH(Joses), and Salo'me ; and THE MOTHER OF THE SONS OF ZEBEDEE.* Matt. 27:61..Mary Mag'dalene and the OTHER MARY WERE THERE. SITTING OPPOSITE THE TOMB Summing the passages, This shows that there may be at least 2 Mary(s) who are Jesus relatives and had sons: Cross reference this with the passage below SEE HOW THE BIBLE DO MENTION JESUS' MOTHER John 19:25..*..But standing the cross of Jesus were: His MOTHER, and MARY THE WIFE OF CLEOPAS (VIRGIN MARY'S sister,), and MARY MAG'DALENE We see that at least three of the brethren mentioned in Matthew 13, OR MARK 6:3 were definitely not siblings of Jesus (although they're called Siblings) but they were Jesus' cousins--sons of their mother's sister. because them Virgin Mary is already with the Disciples ahome. The Bible is simply silent on the exact relationship between Jesus and the other two men, Simon and Jude, mentioned in Matthew 13. This proves two important things. First, it proves that the Greek word for brethren is sometimes used to mean something other than sibling, and it proves that Matthew 13:55-56 in no way demonstrates that Mary had other children. Matt 13:55...*..Is His mother not Mary?, And are not his brethren JAMES AND JOSEPH and Simon Judas* the word brethren includes kinsmen, relatives, Extended family, society, people with same faith etc that's why in court, or bank they will ask you to specify the exact relationship of your chosen next of Kin. The Bible only teaches us that Joseph kept her a virgin until after the birth of Jesus (see Matt. 1:18-25 below). Matt. 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Matt. 1:19 Because Joseph, her husband to be, was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her, he intended to divorce her privately. Submit

Great lecture. Can you tell me why if Mary had Jesus through immaculate conception, did she think he had gone mad? Surely she already knew he was the Son of God and perhaps the rest of the family knew he was miraculously conceived as well?
@khustombuilt28542 жыл бұрын
The Immaculate Conception is not the conception of Jesus, it is in fact, the conception of Mary.... Mary, conceived without sin: Immaculate : without original sin.

@@khustombuilt2854Which is a blasphemous, unbiblical doctrine. Nowhere in the Bible is that even hinted at. We're repeatedly told instead that only Jesus was born without sin.

Mary was ever virgin. In East Africa in the 1980’s people refer to aunts and uncles as mother and father. Similarly they refer to cousins as brothers and sisters. If such practices are still existing in living memory - it is very likely such practices were common 2000 years ago. Please listen to Trent Horn. His explanation is much more convincing than this shallow literal “proof”.

EPIPHANIUS OF SALAMIS “We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of all things, both visible and invisible; and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God . . . who for us men and for our salvation came down and took flesh, that is, was born perfectly of the holy ever-virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit” (The Man Well-Anchored 120 [A.D. 374]). “And to holy Mary, [the title] ‘Virgin’ is invariably added, for that holy woman remains undefiled” (Medicine Chest Against All Heresies 78:6 [A.D. 375]).

Joseph was young. He died in an accident at work when he was 40. The Gospels suggest that these "sisters" were at least 4 because it says "all his sisters" , it doesn't make sense to name 4 bothers by name and not 2 sisters

Sorry Doug, your assertion about Mary not remaing a virgin does not find proof in Sacred Scripture. Scripture’s statement that Joseph “knew [Mary] not until she brought forth her firstborn” would not necessarily mean they did “know” each other after she brought forth Jesus. Until is often used in Scripture as part of an idiomatic expression similar to our own usage in English. I may say to you, “Until we meet again, God bless you.” Does that necessarily mean after we meet again, God curse you? By no means. A phrase like this is used to emphasize what is being described before the until is fulfilled. It is not intended to say anything about the future beyond that point. Here are some biblical examples: 2 Samuel 6:23: And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to (until) the day of her death. (Does this mean she had children after she died?) 1 Timothy 4:13: Until I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. (Does this mean Timothy should stop teaching after Paul comes?) 1 Corinthians 15:25: For he (Christ) must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. (Does this mean Christ’s reign will end? By no means! Luke 1:33 says, “he will reign over the house of Jacob forever and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”)
