In the book Dumbledore said that he didn’t want Dracos soul ruined. And snape asked, “and my soul?” Dumbledore said that Snape knows whether helping an old man fulfill his wishes will not damaged he soul.

When Harry uses one of the unforgivable curse on bellatrix, it only works for a second but pushes her over because he didn’t want it. What about if snapes killing curse didn’t directly kill dumbledore because he didn’t mean it but the push back and of the ledge meant dumbledore died when he hit the ground. When Harry was falling because he fell of his broom after passing out, dumbledore had to stop his fall. "I shall never reveal the best of you, Severus" ... that is all I takes to understand that point. Snape was absolutely selfless from the time he "left" the death eaters to work with Dumbledore and the Order until his death, not caring what people thought of him, as long as his actions were honorable. That is not an easy feat. To be HATED for something you did for the greater good, and tell no one... is a lonely and sad road, and Snape did this with absolute poise and grace "always."

Stapes soul was still intact after helping Dumbledore achieve what amounted to assisted suicide. Avada Kedavra kills instantly so far as we know and it leaves no injury to the body externally or internally. That may have made it even kinder than a potion that was lethal. “Severus, please...” was Dumbledore’s reminder to honour his promise.

I believe there is another reason Snapes' soul was safe. The curse on Dumbledores' hand was misery. Ending the misery that Dumbledore was going through was also a heartfelt act... To end his suffering. People in this kind of daily/hourly constant, unrelenting suffering tend to not talk much about it because no one wants to constantly hear it. Because of this, Dumbledore is just not the complaining type but Snape would understand this and know that by ending Dumbledores' life he would free him from it. It was also an act of compassion.

@@alexc5369 but this is why it isn't murder. If it isn't murder but this answer doesn't explain why, then what is the reason Snape's soul was saved? In real life, clearly things are different - mercy killings of humans is still murder becausewe are supposed to do everything possible to help them. The fact he was already dying doesm't matter - you are to try to extend their life as much as possible. Using this normal logic, one could also argue that it's still murder even if Snape knew someone else would do it if he didn't. The fact is that he took it upon himself to make Dumbledore die by his hand when Dumbledore wasn't threatening him. If you tell me to kill you, it's still murder in real life. But in the Harry Potter universe, killing in this situation (a mercy killing) has a different effect on the soul as the consequences of murder don't apply.

A reason I would use to support this arguement is to simply listen to Alan Rickman's delivery of the incantation when Severus kills Albus in the HBP movie. If you listen closely, you can hear a slight falter in Severus's tone as he pronounces the spell. Severus knew he had to go through with it but clearly had no ill will towards Albus in that moment.
@GhostRider-on6bz
@GhostRider-on6bz 4 жыл бұрын
Alan Rickman's delivery is just another thing these dreadful films got wrong. Not saying it is his fault but his version of Snape is basically far too sympathetic and far easier to read than in the books, which is because these films have to be understood by any moron who will buy a ticket. The way Snape behaves in this scene is very different in the book, where he looks at Dumbledore with his usual sneering expression and cold gaze before shouting "Avada Kadabra". It does not say he has tears in his fatherly eyes or a wobbly lip/trembling voice. But then, these films turned the best book in the series, Order of the Phoenix, in to a two hour, flat mess with a bit of flashing light at the end.

@@GhostRider-on6bz Well, allow me to assure you from my experience of watching the "Half-Blood Prince" with people not previously acquainted with the books (several times), and NONE of them interpreted he was a good guy, especially not at that moment of killing Dumbledore! Everyone would be just shocked and angry. "Far easier to read?" I believe you just allow your retrospective of having read the books to influence how you see that moment. And YES, on repeated views some details in Allan Rickman's acting are there to hint not all is as it seems. But they are small really, a split-second grimace, a note in the voice. "Dreadful", at least, should not be used regarding this part of the film. C'mon.

Snape was a master in occlumency. If he sealed his mind so it didn't contradicts his will to kill it might have a major influence why it worked...so when you put all together it made it possible for Snape to kill Dumbledore without getting split 1) Occlumency 2) The killing of Dumbledore was already agreed on...there for not murder as we know it 3) Dumbledore begs for him to kill him.. not for his life 4) Dumbledore was already dying and likely almost dead anyway 5) He saves Draco by doing so. 6) He knew if he ever should get his revenge towards Voldemort he had to kill Dumbledore at that moment 7) He did it to protect others. Meaning "love" again has the influence 8) The vow has a small part to because he needed to kill Dumbledore to stay safe himself... and he knew he had to stay alive as long as possible.

In a way, the fact that the killing curse works, makes that scene poetic. I always looked at it as the loophole is, Dumbledore was condemned to death through the curse of the ring. Snape also wanted to kill Dumbledore because the curse from the ring was likely highly more painful & drawn out. It's like Ol' Yeller, & getting rabies. Snape had to convince himself that putting Dumbledore out of his misery was better than a long drawn-out death. In-turn, Snape wanted Dumbledore to die, in the least painful way. Albus even said "Severus, please" (put me down, I've accepted it) to help encourage Snape that it was OK & for the Greater Good. The curse from the ring was long & painful. The Killing curse was "quicker than falling asleep"

I get the feeling that he actually didn't kill anyone directly, which was probably rare among the death eaters. If he did, it is a strong possibility he felt real remorse, so his soul healed. However, even if he did kill, it still makes sense for him to be offended, because it would be like Dumbledoor saying that he's so damaged already, that it doesn't matter, which isn't true and is really hurtful to someone with a checkered past. The more you kill, the more your soul breaks. Plus if his already healed, he wouldn't want to break it again. I'm not even sure if Snape knew about murder's physical affects on the soul until Dumbledoor told him anyway. Regardless if someone knows about it or not, the affects will still be the same.

One thing that I was thinking when I saw the title of the video was that Snape wasn't killing Dumbledore out of anger or rage, but out of love for him and the students at Hogwarts. I believe Snape loved Dumbledore as a mentor and as a friend. Like you pointed out, they planned Dumbledore's death because he was dying anyways and Snape had tried everything he could go save him, but in the end even Snape's vast knowledge of potions and probably some grey area magics weren't going to be enough. Yes, I felt that because of those reasons Snape was able to do the spell successfully but his soul be intact too. I always assumed his soul was intact & moved on to heaven, hopefully to find the happiness he didn't have in life. Also even if he thought there was a chance Dumbledore didn't have to die & he could find another way to convince Voldemort, once Dumbledore was dying anyway then he would be like many people watching a loved one die a slow death from disease. By going through with the plan for Dumbledore to die at a set time, he did what he needed to keep the plan on track, but he also kept the man he had grown to respect from suffering a slow painful death. Despite Snape's faults, the only people that he truly wanted to suffer horrible physical pain were those responsible for Lily's death. (He did still have bad feelings towards those that teased him in school, but he wanted emotional vengeance on them, not physical torture.) He wasn't indifferent to the idea of Dumbledore in physical pain or losing respect from being seen as too old & sick, no longer one of the best. He helped Dumbledore "go out in a blaze of glory", & did it in a way that kept secret his own equally hard part of the battle against Voldemort until the moment he was dying too. Even when he revealed the truth of Dumbledore's plan he did it only to Harry, so he could know the very last info he needed to defeat Voldemort, that Harry definitely was a horcrux too & would have to willingly face death. He let everyone think he had betrayed & murdered Dumbledore, knowing he would then be hated forever for it by everyone other than Voldemort & the Death Eaters. Snape was seriously a fantastic double agent, even though his reasons for doing it were personal instead of just to stop evil from winning.

Fantastic theory Dean! Only difference I would have said that even though Snape used the killing curse on dumbledore, it may not have necessarily killed dumbledore had Snape used avada kedavra in another part of the castle but given dumbledores age, the fact that he was wandless and that the curse packs a punch anyway, it could be possible that it was actually the fall that killed dumbledore rather than the curse because the astronomy tower is the highest tower at Hogwarts. For two reasons 1 Snape was loyal to Dumbledore and Dumbledore told him that the curse that was on him was going to kill him slowly and painfully and and to kill him before the curse did would have been a service to Dumbledore and would be a mercy kill. 2 Snape killing Dumbledore was in the service of a greater good. It cemented his place with Voldemort which ultimately lead to the defeat of Voldemort, Voldemort got his confirmation on Snape and now from within, the victory was assured. In short, no because it served a pure purpose from intention and love point if view

*I actually have a different theory. Like you've said, 'Avada Kedavra' (the killing curse) kills someone instantly. I have been confused about Dumbledore's death for a while now because... That's not what happened. He wás hit with the killing curse but when he fell... He wasn't dead. There was consciousness still while falling. That's not how the curse works unless.... You don't mean it and thus the effect not being quite the same just like when Harry hit Bellatrix with the Cruciatus curse. A milder variant was casted. A múch milder variant which turned out to not be effective in the end. I feel that thát is what happened to Dumbledore which would make a lot of sense because of the consciousness thing but also because of Snape's soul remaining intact. How did Dumbledore meet his end then? Logically due to physics. That fall WAS ONE BIG ASS FALL. Nobody would survive anything like that. No wizard no muggle. I feel like this combined with the intention part as well which you have discussed, would cover it all.*

Heck even the strike that kills Lily Potter she is like wincing before falling dead. I think it is dramatic license the movies take but that makes each use unique.

I believe his soul remained in tact simply because he at the core of his being, he was a good person. We all make mistakes, some bigger than others, some with more detrimental consequences. As J.K. Rowling herself said, Snape is a "gray" character, but every day that passes we make choices that shape who we truly are. Snape could have abandoned everything at any time, both before and after the agreement with Narcissa. I don't believe that he wanted to kill Dumbledore, and I believe in some way he was his only true friend and ally. Snape may have caused a lot of damage in his life, but he also went through a lot of pain and grief. I am definitely a Snape fan, but I can't put aside the things he might have done as a DE. I think all of the DEs killed people, but then again, Snape may have been able to lie to Voldemort about that as well (I certainly hope so).

Snape killed Dumbledore because he wanted him to. Dumbledore said that killing him will taint Draco's soul. Therefore, Snape , being a former death eater must have killed someone before. Even if he got away without killing people,snape would need an object to cast his soul into.

First: no, he knew it was a mercy. Second: murder, not killing (self defence, accidents and so on. Can be deadly) splits the soul Third: the soul wants to stay together, so even if a murder happens the split usually only is temporary, probably leaving a "scar" unless you use the horcrux ritual. Exeption of this rule was voldemort because his soul was weakend.

I think that after Snape warned Dumbledore about Voldemort going after Lily, Snape might've made an Unbreakable Vow to stay loyal to Dumbledore and protect Harry. Dumbledore would've made him do this to guarantee that he wouldn't change sides. And he would make him protect Harry not only because Harry was the main target, but because Snape was so dismissive about protecting anyone other than Lily anyway.

(Note: This comment was made before watching past the introduction mark at 1:16. I wanted to give my thoughts on the matter before they were influenced by the video) It didn't split his soul because it was assisted suicide from an incurable condition to prevent further suffering, not murder. As to how he was able to cast it if his heart wasn't in it? His heart was in it, just not directly. He didn't truly WANT to kill Dumbledore, but he desperately wanted to stop Voldemort. He NEEDED to protect the son of Lilly Evans. He desired to ease the suffering of a friend and mentor. And while he didn't want to kill Dumbledore, the fact that those three goals each made killing Dumbledore necessary meant that he needed to kill Dumbledore even if he didn't want to. So, Avada Kedavera worked for him.

Interesting theory. I always had the impression that although killing was part of splitting the soul, you still had to do other things while creating a horcux that resulted in your soul being split. It wasn't just killing that splits the soul. If all you had to do was kill someone or something to split your soul then there is a bunch of wizards and witches walking around with split souls. Does that mean that Barty Crouch Jr. split his soul when he killed the spider to demonstrate the curse? I don't think so. Or what about all of the accidental deaths and killings that magic has caused over the years? I don't think those events would split a person's soul.

Here's another way to rationalize it. Snape's curse didn't actually kill Dumbledore. It only provided enough force to push him off the tower. It was the fall that actually killed him. This way, Snape didn't want to kill him, though, to the Death Eaters, it looked like he did. The reason the unbreakble vow didn't kill Snape is because when the vow was made, it was never said that the murder had to be done with the killing curse. Dumbledore still died because of what Snape did, but because it wasn't magic that killed him, his soul was not split. (EDIT): Also, if you watch Dumbledore's death scene, you can see a brief flicker of hesitation in Snape's eyes as he casts the curse. And also, If you watch closely during the shot where Dumbledore is falling, you can see his eyes begin to close, which wouldn't happen if it was the curse that killed him. (example: Cedric, whose eyes remained wide open.)

Kind of reminds me of A ,line that John coffe said in the green mile "he killed them with their love, Everyday someone kills sombody with their love." Then John coffe States ." I'm tired boss. Tired of people being ugly to each other, and tired of people being killed with their love. It's like pieces of glass in my head. "If you watch the movie ,it is very very impactful, and it's also based off a book ,that Stephen King wrote. So what I'm trying to say is ,snape killed dumbledore out of love . The green mile is a movie with Tom Hanks in it . And Tom Hanks's character did not want to kill John even though John had already been sentenced to die by a jury of his peers accused of something he didn't do. And there's a point in that movie. Where Tom Hanks' character asks John, 'when I stand before God , on my day of judgment, And, am asked, Why I killed one of his greatest creations ?what am I supposed to say ,it was my job!" To which John replies 'it wasn't the job you had to do, it was the kindness that you gave"., And i my self am going to add. And the understanding and sympathy that you gave. To a man that was always considered guilty just because John coffe was a rather large black man in the south I think this story takes place in the 1920's or 1930's in the state of Georgia .Was still a very dark time in the US past .with segregation .and any homeless black person was considered a threat .just because the color of their skin, even if they were totally innocent ,and John coffe had a special gift. he could heal and see things as they're happening they're happening in other words he was psychic he was both a talipath and a Clarvoient and a healer. And any white people at this time, would think it was evil voodoo ,or something like that. When it really wasn't they were special gifts from God. How that applies to dumbledore however he was gonna die anyway because of the curse from the gaunt ring So in many ways snape was doing dumbledore a favor now whether it was out of love or kindness I don't know but I think it's both.

Personally I think Snape did use an unforgivable curse but he knew it would be inert, Dumbledore knew this too, so he stood on the edge of the tower. Snape's unforgivable curse, similar to Harry's, simply knocked their targets over because the pure emotion and intent wasn't there. Dumbledore is clearly alive when he is falling, he wasn't killed by the killing curse, instead he was pushed by it and fell to his death.

I think when Snape was a Deatheater he truly believed in Voldemort and Voldemort knew it. I think he must have killed before for Voldemort to trust him and believe him as much as he did. This means Snape's soul was already damaged in some way and snape probably believing that having not used the killing curse itself that might not be the case. This is why Snape asked Dumbledore about his soul.

I have a theory on the different colored light from Snape's wand. If you're into chakras, blue is the throat chakra (truth) and green is the heart chakra (love). Voldy loves and wants to kill so the light takes the green form. Snape doesn't want to cast his death curse and in many ways it is a lie, so the blue energy dominates.

The only thing different in Severus' killing curse was the subtle change in the color of the curse. His curse was a shade of blue as opposed to the flash of brilliant green light that is usually distinctive in the killing curse. I believe that was a kind of protection for Severus. It may even have been cast by Dumbledore to protect Severus' soul from being damaged. Severus' love and respect for Dumbledore further protected them both.
