what gave it away was the part about her 6 year old daughter. telling her child “reindeer aren’t real” before their trip to lapland would also be (inadvertently) telling her santa’s not real either. besides that, i bought every word of it! she sounded so believable.

To be fair, for like the first 15 years of my life I’m pretty sure the only context I saw reindeers in was Santa’s reindeer. I’ve never seen reindeer in real life. I probably wouldn’t have believed they were real animals if I hadn’t seen them in live action Christmas movies.

I'd seen this before, and still believed her this time around. She's a very good liar. The Googling thing rang true for me, because it's one of those things you never really have cause to look up and verify. It's like the guest they had on that didn't know lambs were baby sheep, he thought lambs and sheep were two different species of animal. Or me, who didn't know until I read the comments section of that video that a "pony" is a specific breed of small horse and not just the word for a baby horse.

Not the same thing, but my mom was convinced until well into her 50s that panthers weren’t real. Apparently her dad had told her that, so I’m also forced to question whether my grandfather didn’t believe in panthers either. A quick Google search sorted that out quickly though. She felt very foolish… at Trivia night.

I wonder if she misunderstood her Dad telling her that panthers are black leopards, or black jaguars. Maybe he said "Panthers don't exist _as a separate species._ They're just black variants of two species." I can see how that might have become confused.

As a Finn and semi-Laplander I can reveal that we actually make reindeer by chucking Labrador puppies and deer into one of those teleportation devices off of the Fly. It´s all for the tourists. I mean honestly why would evolution make cute fluffy antlers? So while not fictional they´re not natural either.

You can absolutely go through life without seeing a damn reindeer. I have definitely never seen one and I don't even know where I'd go to see one if I wanted to..? I've been to many zoos, zero reindeer.

Only female reindeer have antlers during winter months. So... all Santa's reindeers must be female including old Rudolph. Not too hard to accept during these you can be whatever gender you wanna be times.
