And now we find that Sara's shopping problems began in her childhood

Yep, I believed this! I'm older than Sara and remember a time when I went to the post office to cash in my mum's 'family allowance' and also bought a packet of 20 Players No. 6 cigarettes for my dad. All that was needed was a handwritten note - I'm giving permission for my daughter to purchase 20 Players No. 6. It happened, no questions asked.

If Sara's appearances have proven anything, it's that she should not be left alone with money.

We know by now, Pascoe's story are true in 4 out of 5 cases. The highlight of this bit is near the end: Judi Dench? How dare you?

I'd seen this clip before, but forgot to ask. Is "family allowance" in the UK equivalent to what we would call "welfare" in the US? If so, it's odd that it needed to be picked up at the post office. Ours is just posted with the rest of the mail.

It's a specific benefit families get for each child on a monthly basis. (There are also other types of benefit - for unemployment, disability, etc.) I believe nowadays it's paid straight into a bank account. But back in the 90s and before then, collecting it at the post office would have been normal.
@hawsrulebegin7768 Жыл бұрын
We had to collect it back in the day because they did t expect us to have bank accounts.

All benefits were picked up at the post office once upon a time. Family allowance was a benefit paid to all mothers and the idea was only she could claim. The idea being there would be some money for food if the father was drinking or gambling the pay or main benefit away.
@Delinae11 ай бұрын
Interesting, do you know if you need to be a UK citizen to get the family allowance or just a resident? And whether definitions of mothers would have changed with same sex parents? I ask because Canada has a similar allowance called the child benefit, and I remember my mother getting it when we first immigrated but hadn't become citizens.

lol David relieved that Sara really was a devious child, rather than that they had accused her of such but it was deceit...

I believed this before Sara Pascoe spoke a word as you can see that in her nature.

I am still waiting for proper fan of WILTY as one of the panelists, who would use knowledge of previous stories to detect if it is true, because in this case I would love somebody to point all of Sara´s shopping problems mentions on WILTY...

I once found a 5 cruzeiros note and spent it all in stickers hoping that I would complete my album and my parents wouldn't miss the money. They didn't, but I got a lot of repeted stickers and wasn't near to completing it.

wtf ... do you mean "get a family allowance ... 'in the mail' ... from the governemnt" !? ... ( in the US, there is NO 'family allowance' from the government.!! ) ...the gov pays your rent directly to landlord .. no "money sent throught the post / in the mail". ( just seems like a scenerio that would be abused )

"Family Allowance" was the specific name given after WW2 until the 1970s when it shifted into other programs. But still might have been called "Family Allowance" as slang. It's similar to "Welfare" in the US, which I'm sure you know is also used as slang for other programs. Sara's story would have been from the 80s, so she should probably have called it "Family Income Supplement" instead. Back in the day Child Allowance wasn't means-tested, meaning any family regardless of income would receive one for each child beyond the first. The current benefit, since 2013 I think, covers all children but scales out after £50,000 per earner.

just for the sake of others, be aware that OP has no understanding of the system of public benefit programs in the U.S.
