In Japan, they have a stereotypes for every ethnicities.. For Chinese they will say they're loud, rude and dirty, for Koreans they will say they have ugly big head and are robbers. For South east asians, they will say they're short dwarf, ugly, dumb.. For Westerners they will say they're arrogant, smelly, aging fast.. this hoes on and on.. and I believe in every country , there's those similar stereotypes

It’s a bit of an issue of her age and race, isn’t it? I don’t mean at all that Asians are racist, I mean she’s so old she lived in Japan when it was basically 100% Japanese. Imagine going to North Sentinel Island, an island where they practice self isolation, and sending someone there they’ve never seen like an Indian woman or Asian man or whatever it is. Their opinions will be seen by western society and today as racist but doing that and only focusing on that takes away from the why. It leaves people just going “oh this lady is inherently evil” rather then “this is someone who is a product of their time, culture and the events that shaped them”. Diversity isn’t seen as such a good thing to many countries, Japan being one of them. But isn’t it also disrespectful of us in the west to say our way or living and believing is right and we look down on countries who disagree? Like Qatar.

As much as i dont like to say this line I’m about to say, its true. A lot of elderly ELDERLY Japanese find it incredibly hard to understand and learn how the world it today. Growing up in probably what was an 100% Japanese town, she would’ve had no outside experience with anyone of any race (taking aside obv WWII) and during that time, specifically the 1930-50s when most people her age views and perspectives were built, the only outside knowledge she would’ve gained was through articles, books and what not, no real life experience. And lets be honest, books and articles back then were blatantly racist, xenophobic etc And some of them HAD to be during wartime otherwise they’d be at risk of danger. It’s hard to explain, please don’t try to forgive her racism nor ignore it, but just understand she was growing up during war time, when views of race were not like they are now and it may be a subconscious trauma response of hers, that her mind is now locked in this one viewpoint, rigid and unmoving. Most elderly Japanese people have perspectives like this, not just yayoi.

I can understand making observations as an artist and an Asian immigrant as I am both that. But she related Black people to animals and said they have a “funny smell.” If she was so offended by the Vice interview, why did she allow it to continued only if the Black interviewer wasn’t present? That’s telling. Elitism/classism & colorism are prevalent through out Asia. She’s willingly and purposefully kept her views. And I know a lot of older Japanese people have these views (a lot of older Asians in general do). I find it odd considering she’s in the art world- one of the most free spirited and message heavy cultures there is. There’s no way she hasn’t come across plenty of very nice black people if she weren’t trying to avoid them so much. Edit: for those who keep mentioning how isolated Japan is- Yayoi lived in New York from 1958 to 1973. She very much so heard the affects of the Civil Rights Movement and had ample opportunities to speak with people of many different backgrounds as New York is well known to be diverse.

Can people stop saying “she’s Japanese and old so obviously she’s racist” because in a way, you’re making excuses for her even if it wasn’t your intention. “oh it’s NORMAL because…” racism is NOT NORMAL. Older people definitely do have more tendencies to be racist, however it is not an excuse for her behavior. As an Asian myself I have encountered many racist people, but I have encountered even more that aren’t racist, including people that are 70+. Many of these elders had a very conservative and racist upbringing, but they choose not to be because they KNOW it is wrong. When they grew up and go out into the world they met different people from different places, and they learned it was wrong to discriminate against another person. So they didn’t. What I’m saying is that upbringing has a big part to do with racism however who you are is a bigger reason. The only person who can change yourself is you, and they just do not want to change. Unlike what people think, Asian people KNOW what racism is and they are fully aware of what they are doing. This lady definitely knows what she’s doing is wrong, but she refuses to change her ways.

Err actually it kinda does. She is racist because of her upbringing so old age is kinda an excuse for her. I am a southeast asian my people experienced racism in japan and south korea, most culprits were male or female above 50.

Um yeah, she is def super racist. The very last example was not a proper example of it though. The reason I point that out is because although this woman is CLEARLY a racist, it is in fact, not racist to simply describe actual facts, (objective, descriptive information about a person/character in a novel or irl) that happen to be negative. I fear I'm prob coming off in an annoying, confusing way but it bothered me that he included that alongside the other racist examples that were subjective, ugly lies filled with prejudice and stereotyping. TBH this woman here is really not what I worry about. I mean shit, she's out and proud about her racism. I can see her coming. But Bob from my work that smiles in my face then tells a racist joke when they think I'm out of hear shot .....

I mean that’s not surprising from someone who was born at a time where such hatred was considered normal, but like miss thing is 93, like no shade but she’s going to die in few years so I don’t really see what can we do except pointing it out and criticize it.. but like she’s not going to evolve on the matter anyway 🤷🏻 the thing we have to do is teach tolerance to the next generation while we still can, hoping that such hatred will fade a bit more as the old generations leave..
