All I had to see this as part of her description: "Marie Forleo, named by Oprah as a thought leader for the next generation..." Oprah would do us all a favor if she quit recommending people to run our lives.

It is so surreal watching this (kinda) with you. I used to be obsessed with Marie during my depression days. I felt she had all the answers. And I was the only one I knew who was into self-help stuff so imagine me curled up in bed listening to these talks (she has given similar talks to this before) just trying to absorb the life changes by osmosis almost. I always admired how Marie Forleo’s advice always felt more practical than other “gurus”. But to be real - it’s tips and tricks. Things that have worked for her. We all love hearing some great tips and trying it out for ourselves. Even if you can’t completely relate, you may glean some ideas. It’s only for the purpose of sales that it is made so grandiose. The cost of her “time genius” course is ridiculous. It’s also funny that a core concept of her talk goes against the max out mentality. She is now against hustle culture but Max out is perpetuating it.

I just left a comment about the name “Maxout” behind her - her message doesn’t really go with that branding at all. I used to drink ALL the Marie Forleo and Amy Porterfield koolaid, but I finally got free from their influence earlier this year, thank goodness.

That she tries to convince people they don't need therapy, and that they need just her courses.. that's scary and so yucky! Thanks for the video, Cam!

I can’t help but notice the HUGE “Maxout Live” in the background. To me, it gives the exact opposite message of what she’s saying.

I subscribed to the webinar too… Marie is very good at speaking and writing, she is a great story teller. So during the webinar I was like “yes yes yes”… but then, after the hype worn down (and she told the crazy stupid price of her Time genius program), I realize I could (and should) spend that money in therapy. I also don’t like this narrative about the “healing your self during and enlightening moment” because it justifies all this gurus to teach about things they don’t have any credentials on 🤷🏻‍♀️

She is good at speaking and writing but fortunately, for me, the spell has worn off. I found myself thinking she’s got so much right about stress but the solution she offers, the promises around it, the black and white thinking (you’re this or that, here or there) are off. I took her quiz and it’s designed to where anyone who takes it has a problem and needs her program. Lots of influencers doing shady af stuff, she’s not the worst, doesn’t have to be, but this one has the charisma to suck people in, which is not good IMO allegedly.
@AleZentenoBlog

@@spacepastry2744 yes, you are very right about the black and white thinking… And when she is selling marketing and copywriting courses, to me it is like okay, they are overpriced and the results promised are to big to be true, but I found her less problematic than other gurus. I subscribed to this webinar about time actually thinking it was going to be about tools for organization or team management… But she is talking about mental health issues and offering an online program to cure everything??? That is not okay!!! Still, it took me a couple minutes to realize how problematic that is because I fall momentarily under the “spell” 😅

Ugh I hate when people demonize "looking at screens." I've experienced career burnout and depression so I can totally relate to Marie in that way. I luckily was able to make a career change and my mental health is so much better now. But like wtf do screens have to do with anything? I feel like it's such a boomer and gen x thing to say. "Screens" are entertainment, education, and/or socialization for many people and just because you see them as bad, doesn't mean they are. *edited for clarification

While I don’t represent all of Gen X, I agree with you about looking at screens. My spouse is technically a boomer and he’d probably agree with you too.

Sigh. She clearly does not have a systemic lens. So individualistic. Why not use her wealth to help, I dunno, unionizing efforts or advocating for Medicare for all? I’m thinking systemic solutions that support people so they feel less stressed. But no, sell an expensive course and voila! Problem solved. For her. Editing to add: I’ve never head smacked so much, and I watch a lot of anti-MLM videos.

This gurus are always supposed to “meant for more” as someone else said in a comment, but they never address any systemic issues which would be the way to have all this impact they “want to have in the world”.

So disappointing to see her partnering with Ed the mlm scammer. I genuinely liked her and found her inspiring when I was changing jobs back in 2020. I had no idea so many people in the self help space had mlm ties or spoke at their conferences.

I bought both of Marie’s older courses (B School and Copy Cure). At the time, I was still drinking Marie’s Koolaid, so I was super excited about her new program Time Genius - this is not her first time running it. So when I watched her free webinar, something was so off about the whole presentation. I actually exited it without finishing it. Also, I’ve since learned that she (and Amy Porterfield) have non-disparagement clauses in their T&C that you have to agree to BEFORE you purchase her programs.

I kind of hate that someone is using their tumor/fibroid/hysterectomy story to say it happened bc they weren’t a “time genius.” I’m exhausted. My hysterectomy story certainly didn’t take place bc I’m not a Time Genius. It took place through 1) poor women’s healthcare and people not caring enough to research diseases affecting female organs and 2) a series of unfortunate events and having severe endometriosis and adenomyosis (which is not my fault or anyone else’s fault if they also have either or both of those)

Agreed. Tubes being tied are more in line if you don’t ever want to have kids. I did have a radical hysterectomy a couple of years ago, and it was bc my mom had ovarian cancer and I also had inherited her BRCA2 gene. I’m post-menopausal so it was a no-brained for me to have that surgery. I do feel badly about Marie having those tumors - I’m sure that was a scary time for her.

Sorry but my autistic brain gets overwhelmed by things all the time and there are only so many triggers that you can avoid. It is also so invalidating to say to someone with anxiety etc that if you just say I don't do overwhelm anymore will fix your issues and it won't bother you any more.
