I do like the idea that Mirabel becomes the new keeper of the magic, earning a much more passive 'pseudo-gift' like her Abuela Alma. However, I don't fall in line with the theory that Casita is Pedro. I believe the magic was born in part from his selfless sacrifice, but it's not him. The cracks came from the family strain, coming to a head when Mirabel finally called out the dysfunction.

Her gift is her natural ability to bring her family together. It’s not magic on it’s own but instead funnels and magnifies the source of the miracle to better run the household then her Abuela. With her Abuela, her gift is centered around being the protecter of the family while Mirabel’s is the natural evolution of it. The family was struggling, so a miracle came to it’s aid, just as it probably will for generations to to come. Mirabel protects her family much like her Abuela, just without the high stress and intense desperation she felt due to her trauma. She protects them emotionally, something nobody else with gifts were able to handle. She was perfect for the job, if she had powers then she’d likely be put under that same stress and the house would’ve fell.

The candle or Casita were never the real source of the magic. The candle was a representation of Pedro's love, and Casita was a representation of family. The real reason Casita exists is because of the unconditional bonds of family. The cracks start when the family starts to fall apart, with Bruno feeling the pressure to exile himself. Maribel herself is also the person chosen to save the magic. Maribel wasn't given a gift as a consequence to Abuela driving Bruno away. It was a warning of what would happen if Abuela continued to push people out of whom didn't conform to her high expectations. Maribel was left out of the family photo when Antonio gets his powers, and that was the final straw. Casita shows Maribel that the magic was dying because the family was no longer a family. Casita fully physically crumbles and the magic dies when Maribel confronts Abuela about her love for family being conditional.

Mirabel did actually get a gift, according to close details. You see, everyone's clothes have something to do with their power, Dolores: Soundwaves Isabela: Flowers Julieta: Herbs etc, but Mirabel has butterflies! In the opening cutscene, we see Mirabel sitting near the candle with Abuela, but the candle has a butterfly on it, just like Mirabel's dress! The rest of what I am going to say is very complicated and tricky to understand, but you might get it. You see, part pf the candle and the miracle is inside Mirabel, which is why she didn't get a gift. Casita decided that a source of hope was their only last hope, because hope is the keyword! You may not understand, but Casita hid a bit of the candle in a certain human being, (which is Mirabel,) and they thought this would help the family with the certain gifts such as friendship, trust, protection, family, hope and greatness restored so that this would improve the family and they'd all be imperfectly beautiful yet realise that Abuela is only the co-creator and Mirabel is one of the sources of a magical and miraculous candle. Mirabel's gift is being her, and whenever she lost hope, the Casita broke down. Like when she had her argument with Abuela, she was correct, Abuela was ruining the miracle by making it lose hope and slowly die inside, having a break down like Casita, but the truth is, she made part of the miracle die, so Mirabel already has a gift and doesn't need a silly one to replace her powers. so Mirabel is the child and part of Casita, the miracle, and the candle. When she says she is just as special now, we all know that in reality, she just doesn't realise she is more special than anyone else in the family. I believe that the magic originally came from Abuela Alma and that the creation of the candle and the miracle was a response to the trauma that she had just endured. Due to the nature of Alma's desires at the time, the need for refuge and a desire for a good life for her children, the miracle became what it was. The desire for a refuge created the mountain wall and a home that doubled as a nanny for her children. The desire for a better life for her children manifested as the gifts. This line of thinking also explains why the encanto broke down when the family was experiencing emotional turmoil. The encanto's main purpose was to keep the family safe and happy but when the family wasn't happy in spite of what the encanto had given them that little paradox caused the encanto to eventually flicker and die.

My theory is that Mirabel not getting a gift was because she felt unloved and isolated from her family when she touched the doorknob. She was later able to listen to the house and communicate with the house because she was the one who learned compassion from being treated so coldly. Encanto is also a story about a scapegoat dealing with the feelings of inadequacy compared to the golden children, and the treatment from a grandmother who has narcissistic traits due to trauma. Mirabel is lucky, because a lot of children who are in a similar situation to her never get that moment of understanding and subsequent reconciliation with their parents. Edit: also, all of the children in the family were living up to the image that the grandmother had for them. That's why Luisa and Isabella are so happy when Mirabel bless them step away from their expected roles. Edit2: Antonio gets a power because when he touches his doorknob, he feels loved, and like a part of the family. Which is everything that Mirabel didn't feel when she touched the door knob.

I think that mirabel got like a gift to protect the casita and stop time like when she stops time to sing that song she was able to make roses. Pretty much her door is the house but her room didn’t go in because the house whould be her room and that whould not make sense I think mirabel whould have a gift where if the casita has something wrong with it she should just have to go to the door place before the house crushes down in encanto 2 (if we get one) if the casita crushes down again she whould be able to make a door and a kit of doorknobs all she needs to do is put that doorknob in in the casita is back. She also has a room where she can access every power of the gifts but if she goes out the room she won’t be able to access them and she can access them by stopping time. Since she’s pretty much the protector of the casita she whould not have to work like the orthers. Here’s how it whould go in encanto 2 they will firstly go back to that time where she opened the house door to save the casita but this time she has a gift and when she opens that gift the reality just shuts the room down but her gift is still there and she only knows about it until the end of encanto 2 when she needs to save the casita and everyone sees her gift

Speculation but I think Bruno could fix the cracks so quickly if his Gift extends to general sand manipulation, and perhaps any crack debris could count as sand grains? That's why he can have a room full of sand, but specifically will need to set up basically a magic circle of sand with candles of incense just to see into the future.

In the end, when someone (i forgot who) passes Mirabel the doorknob, the doorknob has the letter M on it, which is the same doorknob as her own gifting ceremony, which is the symbol that the door of the Casita is her door because in Antonio's ceremony, you can see that his doorknob has the letter A (for Antonio) on it, so the theory that the whole Casita is Mirabel's room is unofficially correct.

Pedro being the source of the miracle is a popular theory... but this movie is based on "magical realism" and the according to magical realism the source of is more likely to be the grandmother, her pain, and in particular her fear, both so strong that manifested into never actually explained magic. Magical realism is very much link to tragedy and sadness.

I personally think that the reason Mirabel didn't get a gift is because she didn't have anything to bring to the table. I know, it sounds mean, but think about it. At the start of the movie, Mirabel said "I know you're an animal guy" to Antonio and gave him that teddy. Maybe, because he loved animals, that's what his gift related to. Maybe Isabella liked flowers, Pepa liked the weather, Luisa liked lifting, etc. That would explain why she didn't get a gift- because she didn't have a hobby. I'm probably thinking too much into it and have got it wrong, but it's definitely something to think about.

Mirabel DOES have a Gift, even though she doesn’t have the proof of a magic door to back it up. You can clearly see her Gift in action during all of the musical numbers she witnesses, where she can actualY SEE and EXPERIENCE what it is her family is singing about in full detail. Look at how FREAKED OUT she looks during at every single musical number, like in Luisa’s song, or during the Bruno song where she was physically affected by the ‘hurricane winds’ parts as if she had been at Pepa and Felix’s wedding in person even though it had happened way before she was born. Then look at the song involving her grandparents. Mirabel was definitely STARING and looking at EVERYTHING that was happening around her as she witnessed what really happened to grandpa all those years ago, as if she had been there to see it in person, just like in the wedding scene, even though it happened over 5 decades before her birth.

My personal belief is that Mirabel did get a gift, but it wasn't some vast super power like the rest of her family. In fact, her gift stems from that fact. It was the gift of a different perspective, an outsider's perspective. Because of her lack of a door and visible powers, her family and especially Alma kept her at arms length compared to the rest and therefore the latter's constant gaze and orders never applied to her. She was the one who saw the cracks that no one else saw and she was the first to understand Bruno as she too was ostracized for something that wasn't her fault. But what really got me intrigued was through the musical numbers, we see the event on the lyrics play out with Mirabel seeing everything the other characters know; the storms of the wedding, the stampeding riders, even the freeze frame on the family that she's been left out of, letting us see her own perspective as we too are outsiders to the family. And her prediction tablet is literally one of those 'you see things from a different angle' deals.
