Some historians have claimed that Pakistan was thrust upon an unwilling Jinnah by the Indian National Congress. Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed rejects this in his new path-breaking book "Jinnah". In his conversation with Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy, he also says we should not give too much importance to the promises made to Pakistan's minorities by Jinnah in his famous speech of 11 August 1947.

Britishers had the biggest role in creating the myth of the Two Nation Theory. After the revolt of 1857 Britishers became anti Muslim and propped up others. Then they followed the tactic of Divide and Rule. Then , at the time of independence in 1947, U-S-A , the successor of Britain as a Super Power , desperately wanted to create Pakistan so to keep one part under the west even if the other ( India under Nehru ) went to the Soviet Bloc

@@mcs106 India chose secularism in the face of violence and slaughter during the crisis of Partition. That says what India as a country stands for. Yes the hindutva extremism would've continued to exist as the Islamic extremism continues to exist in Pakistan. But the continuous efforts of the secular leaders would've made the country stable. Come to India and you'll see that every Hindu has a Muslim friend and a Muslim has a Hindu friend because at the end of the day we all live in the same society. The incidents of extremism would still exist but the youth of the nation would continue to work on the country to make it a super power. It's the western political interests with separatists that divided India. Nonetheless we are still a super power.

I want to assure @abracadabra that your "parents" were legit. As for the myth of second class dhimmi's in antiquity, does the author realize that in a court of law, all subjects (it was a time of royalty, mostly) were equal regardless of faith. (Also being a royal system, by definition there was no legislative branch of government). The real difference was taxation. Most so-called dhimmis were Judeo Christian who were tenners (paid 10% tax under Muslim or non-Muslim rulers as well) while for the Muslim Zakat (aka tax) was 2.5%.

Dear Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, Equal rights is not a new idea. Not from 1945 from Americans as you mention here. It was covered in the state of Madina by Muhammad (SAW). I suggest you to conduct further research. There's great detail in Islam on how non-Muslim(s) will be treated. The state of Madinah covers this from the time of Muhammad (SAW). We can say that Muslim(s) or human being(s) have not read or practiced them. Don't blame Islam for mistakes or crimes of human being(s) Muslim(s) or otherwise Let's call a spade a spade

The making of Pakistan a tiny country was a a grave mistake. Except for what is the Pakistani Punjab where there are mostly fanatics (not all Punjabis of Pakistan are fanatics and even many are extremely enlightened) most of the subcontinent did not desire to be fragmented. Imagine if Pakistan was merged with India she Pakistan would benefit greatly. India is now the third strongest military power on the planet surely stronger than a strongly Jewish backed China. China and Jews are strong allies and Muslims are being butchered in China, and even made to eat pork! Recently Prof. Charles Lieber of Harvard was arrested for passing on sensitive data to China. However, Pakistan is destined to stay now as a small neighboring country of the colossus India. India is a great space and a huge nuclear power as well. Yet I hope these brother countries live in peace and harmony and both prosper.

The EU could become a success because almost all of them were Christians. In South Asia the geographies have been divided in the name of contradictory and conflicting interests of two communities. Further, spread of Islam is the declared national agenda of Pakistan. Amid these realities having a SAARC on the lines of the EU is a far-fetched dream unless there is an honest truth and reconciliation process . Further this has to be at the grassroots level and not mere at the State level.

What we need to accept is that some Mohmdans in India hated Hindus so much, they didn't want to live with them. People who had lived with each other for centuries, under the rule of the various kings and other rulers, suddenly couldn't live with each other. Then, one country started nation building, developing, growing, slowly but steadily till it has now reached the orbit of Mars, has made a name for itself in IT and has become a hub of satellite technology whereas the other, what can we say? Pakstan too has made a name in IT, only these letters stand for International T* & error ..* ism and where the constitution itself discriminates against minority religions. We ( myself Victoria Miroshnik and Dipak Basu) have analyzed this issue in our book, India as an organization, published by Palgrave-Macmillan. The thesis of Ayesha Jalal was wrong. Jinnah was recruited by the British in 1934 to create a new state where the British Army could stay to protect the Middle East from the Soviet Union and the sea route between the Suez Canal and Australia. NS Sarila, who was the ADC for the last three Vice-Roys of India, wrote that in his book. There are two others who were recruited by the British: Gandhi in 1915 and Ambedkar in 1930. British supported the Muslim League wholeheartedly from the beginning in 1906. In every riot, British police took the position to support the Muslims. That was obvious in August 1946 in Calcutta, then in Noakhali, and Chittagong in East Bengal. Pakistan was created by the British and Jinnah, Gandhi, Ambedkar were the British agents. Gandhi planned Pakistan in 1943. He sent his plan to Jinnah through Rajagopalachari, but Jinnah wanted a corridor through India which Gandhi could not agree with.

@@MrLikea8055 Gandhi used to say one thing for the crowd, another for the British, his master and he used to do yet another to confuse the people. He made a plan to partition India in 1943 when he was enjoying prison. He sent his plan to Jinnah through Rajagopalachari. Jinnah as usual wanted the whole of Bengal and Punjab and a corridor to connect these separate lands. Otherwise, Sri Aurobindo said, even in 1940 that in practice Gandhi accepted the partition plan of Jinnah. In 1947, Gandhi had the option to reject the British proposal and to start a new agitation, but he did nothing. He even betrayed Khan Abdul Gaffer Khan and the Khan of Kalat and pushed both of them to Pakistan. Gandhi knew that the British wanted to create Pakistan and Gandhi could not do anything to displease the British.

Jinnah was essentially a Bombay boy. His friends were mostly Hindu. His Doctor was a Hindu Gujrati, Dr. Patel. Other than Jinnah he was the only person who knew that Jinnah was dying. At one time Jinnah was considered the best dressed man in India, He wore fancy London suits and silk fine ties. Now, here is where the Indian and Pk versions differ about him. Per the Pakistanis he was a Namazi who prayed five times a day. Per the Indians he was a worldly man who drank good Scotch, ate pork and c onsorted with beautiful women. From what I have read, Jinnah encouraged violence in Calcutta. He also appointed Liaquat Ali as PM. LQ wanted the Hindu properties so he could settle the Muslim immigrants from India in those properties. The Muslim Sindhis did not get any of the properties. LQ asked the Governor of Sindh to appoint a Minister of Emigration. Gov. Kuhurro declined and was assassinated. In India Nehru declined to give citizenship to the Hindu Sindhis. He thought they would all go back. Then two Senior Sindhi Hindus Congressmen insulted him at a gathering and twisted his arm really hard and he agreed to give the Sindhi Hindus Citizenship. The School, College and Hospital builders in Sindh were mostly Hindus. Now they do the good work in Bombay. Google Colleges built by the Hydearabad/Sindh Collegiate Association, Mumbai, and you will be shocked by what they accomplished.

It's very clear from historical sources that even until March 1940, the Lahore Resolution talked about an autonomous Muslim majority zone within a larger Indian federation. Even later , the Quaid and his companions weren't very clear about the exact status or nature of what they wanted. It's after the end of World War 2 in 1945 that the idea of complete independence began to emerge as a viable option ; and it was only after the 1946 elections that the Quaid became firmly convinced of the need for Pakistan .

Honestly, an undivided India (autonomous or not) would have made us powerful (maybe already a superpower). The wars and divides have been too costly. However, like with Kashmir in India, an autonomous region and one as big and distinctly muslim as today's Pakistan and Bangladesh would have made seccession of other states more doable. It would also have been a headache for the central government to handle a muslim government asking for shariat or muslim specific laws from a secular constitution while the Hindu majority get nothing in return. The idea of autonomy was probably more dangerous (but still would have made a united nation) than partition.

Mhdalibhai Zhinno Thakkar's 2-nation theory was exposed to be the sham it was, in less than 25 years of Pakstan's existence when it turned out that even Mohdmans couldn't live with each other in a country carved out especially for them for this reason. One can make the case that the death, suffering, and dislocation that happened during the partition and again during the breakup of Pakistan in 1971 make Jinnah and Muslim League's demand for Pakistan quite an unfortunate one. SO YOU DISCREDIT HIM FOR HIS NOBEL WRITING AND POSING HE IS JUST POSING HIS ABILITY OR THE INTELLECTUALISM. BUT EACH WRITING OR THE READING OR THE DEBATE OR THE SPEECH OR THE THEATER OR THE FILM OR THE DRAMA OR THE SONG OR THE NATIK OR THE EXPRESSION EVEN PULL OR PUSH WE ALL TO AND ARE VERY MUCH THE TOOLS OF EDUCATION AND AWARENESS AND HELP TO LEARN MUCH. KEEPING IN VIEW THE OPTIONS OF IFS AND THE BUTS, WHAT WAS THE FUTURE OF THE UNITED MUSLIMS IF THE INDIA WAS NOT DIVIDED BY THE WAY KEEPING IN VIEW THE HINDU AND THE RSS AND THE MODI MENTALITY AND WAS IT ACCEPTABLE FOR WE ALL NOW YELLING ON THEW MEDIA TO PROVE THE JINNAH WAS WRONG AND THE CREATION OF OUR HOMELAND WAS A MISTAKE AND WE COULD HAVE SOME RESPECTABLE PLACES IN THE DOCTRINE AND HOLDING OF THE INDIAN MAJORITY RULING AND THE POLICE ROLE IN BRUTAL KILLING OF THE MUSLIMS AND THE MINORITY. AND DISINTERESTINGLY HOW MANY THE LOVERS OF THE MODI DOCTRINE HAVE LEFT FOR GOING TO INDIA AND EVEN HAVE GONE THERE ? IF I AM NOT SO WRONG STILL THERE ARE KEEN EFFORTS THAT LOOK LIKE JOINING THE BOTH COUNTRIES ONCE AGAIN BUT NOBODY IS TELLING THE PEOPLE MADE THE SCAPEGOAT AND THE FUEL OF THE BRUTAL KILLING STILL CONTINUED. WHY WE DO NOT HAVE THE ANSWER THAT HAS OR COULD BE THE BEST MECHANISM TO RESOLVE THE ISSUES BASED ON THE ETHNIC OR THE RELIGIOUS BASES AND MORE OVER THERE ARE SOME EVIDENCES THAT HAVE RESOLVED THE MAJOR ISSUES OF THE POOR AND THE DENIED IN INDIA SO TO MENTION AS THE RESOLVE TO LIVE TOGETHER AND IF THE ISSUES OF BOTH T HE HINDUS AND THE MINORITIES ARE STILL THE SAME OR MORE INCREASED WHAT LOOKS IT SENSIBLE TO SEE THE PRESENT TALKS AND THE DEBATES TO HAVE THE BROTHERHOOD. SO WE SHOULD FOCUS ON THE BRUTAL ISSUES OF THE POPULATION AND TRY TO RESOLVE THEM FIRST OTHERWISE IT ALL LOOKS LIKE AN INTELLECTUAL DEBATE BUT WITH NO RESOLVE AT ALL. WE MUST KEEP IN MIND THAT THE RESOLVE OF OUR ISSUES IS CONDITIONAL TO DISARMAMENT AND USE THAT MONEY TO UPGRADE THE LIVING STANDARDS OF THE POOR AND THE DENIED.

The professors never talked about BJP leader Jaswant Singh's book "Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence" where he entirely rejected this theory; these guys trying to become "SHAH SE ZIAADAH SHAH K WAFAADAAR", or more Hindus than BJP leaders themselves. The problem with extreme side of left or right leanings is that you cherry pick your ideas and draw your own conclusions based on your ideology. Can't we cherry-pick Dr. Hoodbhoy's life, statements and newspaper articles and draw whichever things we like. Unfortunately these professors' lifetime positions on Muslims and Pakistan are very well known and these revolve around if you listen about any bad thing happening and say it must be Pakistan and Muslims and then try to find arguments to support their claim. Social sciences are not like natural sciences that one can test the ideas in lab and draw the conclusions based on the experiments. Social sciences do not work like it; first you need to be bit unbiased in your approach and ideas. If you cherry pick your statements from 10 years of statements of Quaied-e-Azam then you can satisfy your egos and your already converted audience but can not make justice to truth.

Exactly! There were many (Bloody) events prior to the speeches happened in many part of United India creating a background to make " 2 nation theory" a way out. And there r many aspects and players involved in it. Unless we see the entire history from all different angles one cannot come to a conclusion on dynamics of the " Speeches" .

Clean n clear facts stated by the author about so called secular Jinnah. Jinnah who was converted to Sunni, did not have understanding, how bad or worse Pakistan will be for minorities and even Non Sunni population. I won't be surprised if in future they issue fatwa that Shia are non Muslim. 🙏

@@karunayashoda36999 There were large pockets of Muslims who were against the actions of the Muslim League and its supporters. Muslims in the NWFP were pro-Congress. Muslims in Balochistan were against Pakistan. Congress Muslim leaders like Maulana Azad had a large following. Nehru should take the blame also on Direct Action Day. It happened because he reneged on the agreements in the Cabinet Mission Plan. At the Cabinet Mission Plan, Jinnah had agreed to a united India. But Nehru did not keep to his word

Oh no, don't try to give a clean chit to jinna. Even if jinna had dis agreements with nehru that does not justify and change the fact what jinna did. Call for direct action day was given by jinna, which lead to blood shed of innocent indians.indians will never forget that.

Ishtaq Sahib, renowned and learned scholar, omits for some reasons, Bengal, Assam and Sindh's contribution and role in the Freedom movement. In these particular areas muslims had less hatred for non-muslims and took the struggle for social justice.
