Did My Taranov Split Work? Beekeeping

One of my strongest colonies likes to swarm.....a lot. To help keep my bees and prevent them from swarming, I do Taranov splits with them. This is my first split of this hive in 2022.

Suggestions for future use: Staple a rag on the end of your ramp so that it dangles from the end into your box and gives the bees a place to cluster and form a bridge into your new box otherwise they will do the "march". Move your ramp closer to the original hive. The suggested spacing is 6-8 in.

that was very interesting to watch Nikki. I'm not sure if I wld have the confidence to do one of those. With my luck they wld all think a hurricane was hitting them and just all leave. It's a cool split to do at least once. I think worse case, they would just go back to the original hive or you lose the queen. I would never do one without viable swarm cells in the original hive. I'm checking on them this weekend so I'll be working on that update video!

@@sweetbeefarms it was sure nice to watch. Speaking of loosing queens ...I was marking a queen from one of the swarms I caught and after I marked her, I was trying to get her back in the hive and she flew....and not into the box. I never found her. I looked in yesterday and they did make 5 queen cells so I'm hoping it goes good.

Thank you. I think everyone should try a taranov split at least once because they are really cool. After you do them a couple times though, you're like "man, this is a lot of work". 😂 Especially since other splits are so easy.

It's such a clever way to make that swarming behaviour work for you. They do their song and dance and follow their natural instincts and you guide them where you need them to be.

I’ve never done one but I think it was because the sheet was touching the box and they went in instead of clustering on the sheet

That could be it. In the past I have pulled the sheet down to encourage them to do it but other than a few bees, they stayed in the cluster.
