May I suggest making covers for the windows while on off-road tracks. Maybe as simple as a way to hang plywood over the glass before you set off.

My thoughts exactly
@PatandJele Жыл бұрын
We wish it were that easy. As you can see the ply survived about 10km of that track with a giant gash in it, whereas the windows went through a couple hundred of kms. In the end the bedroom window was just purely bad luck, if the Mog leans into a tree resting on that window the only thing that will keep the window from shattering is putting a steel shutter in front of it. We are planning a better design for the next Mog, but for now we are hoping we won't have to replace any more windows ;)

Without a doubt, Cape York for me, and down Gunshot was crazy scary. But so glad I did it!

Hey mate, that's awesome! When we had a Sprinter, we took it to Cape York and watched other people do Gunshot! Did you do it in your Mog? Congrats! You won the safestyles! Pls shoot us an email to jpadventures19@gmail com and we'll get the shipping sorted :)

Damn mate. Thats a lot of damage. Yes, it's still worth it, and deep down I sure you both know it. You really dont want to just sit at home and brood about what you could be doing. :) It has made me rethink my design for mine - when I can finally get around to starting my build. So, design changes I have been thinking of making to my U1700L, and now will... 1. Set Camper to same (or less) height and width as the cab including the solar panels and scrub Bars. A slide up tough outer section on actuators to restore full non-travel hight. 2. Side Window Protectors for camper, Steel reinforced thick removable window protectors. 3. Look into big tires with sidewall reinforcing (I hear there are some with kevlar reinforced sidewalls - figure they are probably going to be worth the money). 4. I was going to go with just 1 spare, but you just talked me out of that. I have only taken 1 spare in the past, but I have regretted it, and with the wider track... its gotta be 2 + repair kit. 5. Go nuts with scrub bars all over to help branches slide off the back. Might have to get clever to get stuff to slide between the cab and the camper as they articulate separately. 6. Custom make Fridge / Freezer. Both wider and less than 1m tall to get more volume and less height, same as smaller yachts do.

Yeah we know the experience was worth it, even though in the moment you are kicking yourself. Love the design ideas, we are planning another Mog down the road as well! If you are doing a hard shell pop top, have it cover the windows when stowed, that way they don't have to deal with the trees. As for making it the same width of the cab, I would rather take the extra space, your wheels stand out further anyways so there is not much to be gained compared to the space lost.

Skippers canyon (Queenstown NZ) and route 109 in Peru. Maybe on your next bush trip put some protection on the side windows ( likeThe Outfit has on their Unimog). Looks like this track is to narrow for a MAN HX60 (2.5m wide) so we will skip it when we get to Aus.
@PatandJele Жыл бұрын
The protection they have would be absolutely useless for us🤣 We have 6mm toughenes glass double glazed windows and not plastic :) The glass is stronger than any protection unless we would put steel on top :D We are 2.4 wide so yeah, quite challenging🙈

What and adventure guys. Loved the shots of the Mog driving next to a cliff face, absolutely majestic. That tyre change was very sketchy, please get one of those Safe Jack extensions and base for your Mog, if possible. Thanks for the taking us along, cheers.
@PatandJele Жыл бұрын
Yes those cliffs are amazing and there is no one out there!!! We want to go back one day and see if there is a track all the way along the cliffs. The top of the jack already has a fitted extension to fit around the axles, but a base would have been super handy. We would love to carry around a 500x500mm 5mm plate but there are limits to what you can take along. That's what the Exitrax and blocks of wood are for!

Good on you guys for staying positive. Damage and headaches like that can be demoralizing and make you question your decisions for sure, but through experience (I've been through it all with my Mog) I promise there will come a time when you look back on it all and laugh. Keep up the positive mindset; remember, you are making life long memories by doing and seeing things that many people can only dream about... Looking forward to your next adventure guys!

We have a saying "Worse things happen at sea", meaning at least you didn't sink!! At least you'll get good at changing tyres AND windows. Another saying "Par for the course" - you play the game those are the charges. At least you've set off admirably prepared - and that's the main difference. Your skills have got you through - at a cost admittedly but I reckon the experience, in the long run will pay dividends. Good luck; i'll attempt a coffee purchase on here, a few beans towards whatever...

I felt sorry for you doing the tyres and other damage. I appreciate seeing places I'm unlikely to go through your eyes. Given our setup, the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks are about as "crazy" we've got. Never the less, they were great experiences, which I hope we can repeat.
@PatandJele Жыл бұрын
Yeah it hurts.... You never know, we started out with harmless tracks and it just kept getting more and more crazy. It's all about the amazing places out there, once we set our minds to some of them, we seem to be willing to go through some rough stuff to get there!

I highly recommend you buy a tyre plug kit with metal handles on the tools. I've seen the result of a plastic handle failing and the tool going through the user's hand. Arb make a set that are nice

Ever considered having screw on shutters on the outside, over the windows when you're going through this kind of brush? 🤔🇦🇺
@PatandJele Жыл бұрын
Considered yes, but we won't do it. It is rare that this happens with 6mm double glazed toughened windows. We had massive branches scraping along and usually nothing happens. It only happened because while a big branch was in the middle of the window the Mog suddenly bounced against it (leaning to that side). We have done so many tracks now and do see it happening often. Would be a different story with plastic windows of course :)

Hey what do you guys think about the duraturn y811 tyres and where did you source them in aus ps tuck looks the goods 🤙
@PatandJele Жыл бұрын
Thank you! We got ours from a local shop in Perth called Midvale Discount Tyres. I recon the Advance and Duraturn are pretty much the same. Both companies are huge in China. The difference we know is that the Duraturns have one more ply of steel on the sidewalls compared to the Advance ones. So far we've only had the damages you could see in the video but we took them on narrow and rough tracks and they are still going🤷🏼♀️

Do not use plugs on the sidewalls except to limp back to the civilisation.

Thats what we did and had it properly vulcanized after. It doesnt help when civilization is over 500km away...
